Had a bad night on ebay tonight, lost 2 really great auctions and have been buying a lot of figures lately. Just recently I have gotten the feeling of being "tired" of chasing certain figures down without having to pay so much for them. I'm not the richest guy on the block but have a pretty decent monthly budget I spend on them. Just getting to a point where I ask myself "do I really need this?" on certain items.
Ever since I got back into collecting again I have been replacing some of my lower quality jakks figures with mattel, was doing pretty good but now I think I missed out on a lot from those years I was absent.
Any one else get these moments?

I'm with you brother. I still have hundreds of Jakks but only over the past year started collecting Mattel. It's tough to make up for lost time with the Mattel and those Ebay auctions can be shocking/heart breaking over the last minute. Maybe keep the fingers crossed that the Legends keep selling well as Mattel seems to be bringing back new versions of some of their older figures.

You got beat on one of those last second bids huh?
Those are painful especially if the auction ended at a good price.

I get so mad when I last second bid and they out bid me even then... eBay just gets you mad sometimes.

I felt this way with both figures and movies (DVDs). My best solution was to narrow most of what I collect to my absolute favorites. Favorite superstars, favorite movies, books, what have you.
I'm happy I can splurge on a great elite, exclusive or any other figure of my all-time favorites and pass on things like a Trent Barretta because it's his first time in the line. Makes it more manageable and gives me more breathing room.

I feel ur pain mate... Best thing about eBay, nothing is ever a one off - nothing. Everything comes back on eventually. Keep at it, enjoy the hunt and stick to ur price limits.

I feel you. I've had to track down certain figures i've sold off in the past for crazy prices. But thats the way it is. Best advice is just narrow down your searches to the most basic details. For example i was looking for an orange trunks Orton for the longest time but obviously it never showed up for a decent price if at all under the "WWE Mattel Summerslam Heritage Randy Orton" tag so i searched "Randy Orton action figure" and sifted through some Jakks stuff and crappy unrelated things but eventually found one MOC for $8 a few months back. Nobody really bids on those auctions because they don't find em.

I find the prices most of the time AWFUL. I remember when we were at Legends 4 or 5 I think - you could still get them for like 20$ on ebay. NOW it's ridiculous. And the sad thing is - these figs aren't even 'old'. You can get alot of vintage toys for cheaper - MOC. HOW does THAT make any sense? I'm glad I only need 3 older figs Gabriel, Hardy and Smith but they're gonna wait a while cuz they're all over 50$ and that's without the 20+$ shipping... These scalpers are getting out of control too and stores do nothing about them. I was at TRU this weekend trying to find a fig for someone on the board and I was talking to one of the guys there and he was showing the only new stuff they got in - Transformers toys. Anywhoo, he was telling me about these combiner figs (I don't collect TF stuff) and he had to you know just tell me cuz he had none to SHOW ME. Cuz some 40 yr old guy bought all the ones he was unpacking before he even had taken them out of the box. He took them all. THIS kind of crap pisses me off. Maybe we need to petition a company like TRU to not let people buy 4-6 or more of the SAME toy cuz they're obviously scalpers... I know it's hard to put limits on what customers buy cuz you're in the business of selling toys BUT STILL. Something THAT obvious is ridiculous. Anyone got any ideas on how possibly get these retailers to acknowledge this online SCALPING and help put (somewhat) of an end to it? I just can't believe it when I see things like Lex Luger going for 70$ (with shipping) on e-bay. My TRU got ONE in this year. ONE lousy figure for the entire city. Bad enough they don't get sent the merch from wharehouses but then we gotta pay through the nose cuz some douchebag can't get a real job and has to make a hobby into a disgusting cash cow opportunity. It's just getting out of control and yes I feel the OP's pain. Even just NOT FINDING anything on shelves when you've checked once a week for like 2 months is really frustrating. For the first time ever - last month - I was like "screw it, maybe I should just sell them all..." cuz I couldn;t find anything I wanted in stores and blah blah balh Now I doubt I ever would have but damn it can be a bummer sometimes lol yes I rambled on and on - sorry lol

I hear ya man. Just try to take it slow. You only have to buy the figure once. And then the pain is all over. Save up for those more expensive ones, and expect to pay top dollar for em. Then you'll win those auctions, and never have to hunt & hope for em to come around again at a good deal.

I feel ya. Luckily the way I collect tends to protect me emotionally. There are one or two I've missed and I'm just not gonna pay crazy prices for them

I hate losing out on auctions, but I always bid my maximum amount immediately, if it goes for more I don't care, even if its a couple of pennies Im outbid by, remind yourself, you don't know how much the winning bid was for, I'd much sooner lose out at my maximum than overpay

I get so mad when I last second bid and they out bid me even then... eBay just gets you mad sometimes. One scenario I'd like to put forth is this: A figure is auctioned and I put down I'm willing to go up £100.00 as I'm from the UK. If someone came in to bid against me, would EBay tell that bidder they would have to bid over the £100.00 to outbid me ?. Any ideas.

You bid and if you are still under the bid, you bid again, when you bid higher, you go green. It's an auction, not a car boot sale.

At the start of Mattel's contract I planned on buying every Basic and Elite figure. After spending nearly $300 on Basic 4 (a set I didn't even care for) and Two Pack series 4, I thought to myself 'why am I even buying these figures?' and eventually sold them all. Now I just stick to buying all the Elites.

I collect Warrior and Ruback figures, loose and MOC, so I buy 2 of each. Sometimes all there is is 2 of each, I'm not scalping though. Sometimes certain figures are one per case, it's not because someone has bought them all

Most of my eBay purchases are Buy it Now. Auctions annoy the crap out of me. If you place you maximm bid up front, there's always some jackass that feels compelled to bid over and over again in small increments until he passes you. That leaves sniping, and while I will still do it on occasion, I feel it's beneath me.
