First, it's weird putting a thread about him in Classics, time flies by.
Anyway, I was watching his match from 2013 against Nakamura in NJPW, and it seems he developed a personality he didn't have while in WWE. He also seemed to have bulked up a bit too. I haven't seen any of his other indy stuff, but if this guy had developed even halfway decent mic skills, and maybe found his personality a bit sooner, he really could have been huge. It seems like there was a lot of wasted potential on both ends, and at the time I didn't really see a high ceiling for him, but after watching him work as a heel in NJPW, it seems like he could've been a lot more.
I'm not saying he could've been a Cena or Orton or Batista, but he definitely could have been a Jericho type if they helped him develop that personality he was missing at the time.
What about you guys? Do you think he went as far as he could in WWE, or could he have been developed into something more?

I always felt Shelton got more than he should have in the WWE.
He wasn't charismatic, and the fact he had 3 IC Title reigns, and a US Title reign is very generous. The Tag Title reigns with Charlie Haas were great though, the WGTT was a sweet team!

It seems like he gained something when he left WWE. It's a real shame.

Shelton Benjamin is in the same boat as Del Rio for me. He was always an absolutely incredible in ring worker but just the worst, most boring promo. Del Rio had an excuse though in that he still didn't have a super strong grasp on the English language. Shelton was just super not interesting when he held a mic. He has developed a really good personality outside of the WWE though.

He went further than he should have, really. For all his athletic ability, he wasn't much of a pro wrestler. WWE gave him a great platform to launch his singles career with the Triple H mini-feud, and it was all downhill from there. His matches were rarely anything special, apart from very few occasions like that one with Shawn Michaels. One of the worst Intercontinental champions ever, really made the belt seem dull. And showed no personality whatsoever, although apparently he was always really funny and charismatic backstage so that's cool if he's figured out how to translate that to on-camera now. He's young enough to get another shot too, I think, but there are a bunch of newer guys in WWE now that are better than Shelton ever was before.

I would definitely agree about another shot, but I think he's pushing 40 now. I wouldn't mind him coming to NXT on a deal like Rhino apparently has where he works with younger guys, but I definitely think his time has passed for a main roster push. Though I wouldn't mind seeing him tear it up with Daniel Bryan.

Shelton was one hell of a worker he needed a mouth piece that wasn't his "mama" and he could have been an ocasional main eventer. When I see him in New Japan he's just kinda there, i'm sure he'll get a chance in NOAH to shine a little but who knows.

I'd love to see him face Tanahashi or Okada (if they happened before, PLEASE let me know, I'm fairly new to NJPW), and don't think his style fits too well with NOAH. Though, admittedly, there's a lot of matches in both promotions I'd love to see him in.

He faced Tanahashi in the G1 last year since they were in the same braket and i don't believe he faced Okada unless it was in a tag match with the other Suzuki-Gun members facing CHAOS.

I must find the Tanahashi match. Thank you, good sir.

As athletic as he was and a show stealer, I just didn't like him very much.

Talented but sloppy and cringeworthy at times...proof that you need more than flashy moves and MITB spots to hold people's attention...

I liked Shelton but more as part of Team Angle/WGTT than anything else. I would love to see him get a shot in NXT being their top guy for a while and help putting over some talent down there.
I think he could be a GREAT hand for them there.

A lot of the comments above pretty much describe my same feelings about Shelton Benjamin.
Hell of an athlete but not much of a "sports entertainer".

I honestly disliked Shelton greatly. Yes, he could flip, but he was a charisma vacuum. Haas > Shelton.

He's one of those guys you like for the spots he can do and his atheleticism, but wish he could have been better than he was. He had not much else.

Shelton's one of my all-time favorites. However, I understood he was a mid carder at best, but I wish he would've tapped into his potential to become more of a main eventer.
