So we had a party at the house this weekend. Some of my wife's co-workers came by and when touring my office and seeing all my figures, their reactions were either "hmmm" (pretty much all the ladies) or "this is the most awesome thing ever"(a couple of the dudes who had a passing familiarity with WWE).
What is the typical reaction that a non-collector gives when seeing your collection for the first time? Just curious, seeing as how even a few of my Friends who are WWE marks don't really understand how someone can spend a sizable chunk of change on what they term a "doll".

I'm a 32 year old man who collects Wrestling Barbies. Any feedback, positive or negative just comes with the territory.

i think it depends on how they are displayed and what YOUR reaction is , more so than the one wondering about it.. i had to "man" up with mycousins who stumbled upon mine, but once i sorta told them its a hobby for me, they quickly understood. aAnd those are people i have to see all the time.. i wouldnt worry about people who you dont even really know, im sure they have hobbies youll say "hmmmmm" too also.

I just had a friend from work over recently and he really dug the collection, even recognized a lot of the legends, though he didn't know the current product at all . I've found that women for the most part do not understand why we would want to have these things at all lol

Most people are gobsmacked, then they tentatively ask me questions, and then the missus says something like "Don't get him started, or make out you are interested"
I can usually sense that they are quite interested!!!!
It takes up about H 3M, by L 5M, but W 3M. So your average size Garage, and that's packed completely full, most were expecting a couple of boxes or something.

When my mom came to visit and walked into my office for the first time...
"So... I saw your thing in your office..." - Her "Yeah and...?" - me "It's pretty weird..." - her "Well it's what I like to do.. I buy/sell/trade figures, it's a fun hobby" - me "Well it looks f**king awesome" - her
That was the first reaction haha other are just like, oh cool, and then don't say anything else. Unless it's a fellow collector/fan, then they love it lol

Wrestling fans who see my collection: "Oh wow! That is so cool, you got that guy?? Awesome!"
Non-wrestling fans who see my collection: "So how old are you again?? You know it's fake, right?? You have a lot of small men in underwear on display, you aren't gay, are ya??"
Like someone said, it comes with the territory. I don't care either way. If anything both positive and negative remarks come off as annoying. The positive ones mean you have to talk wrestling with them for a while, and the negative ones mean you get to hear crap you've heard time and time again.

It's a mixed bag. I think all of my closer/college friends "get it" for the most part. I don't normally bring it up among new acquaintances or newer friends. I def don't talk about it among chicks. Haha, that's not really a good opener. LOL, but I have an entire room FULL of toys (WWE and Jurassic Park are the majority, but got Walking Dead, Batman, Movie Maniacs, Star Wars, etc). When I just put it up a year ago, it's A LOT to digest. Haha, even for a collector like me. But, I usually wait to tell people about my hobby and they are usually impressed. I always try to make my displays look good. I just have all my elites in an old China cabinet on Mattel's stackable display stands. Looks real nice. People that know me, understand and appreciate my hobby. That's all I ask

Ive collected all my life so most of my true friends have already known about my collections so its kinda like nothing to them. Its like walking in and seeing a pot on the stove. Ive brought a few girls over and their first reaction is usually shock and then an awesomeness because the first thing they see is my 49ers room which is filled full of stuff. Then they'll get to the "weirder" side and see the wrestling figures and Batman figures in another room. All of them have been cool with them though. Couple of them have looked closer at them and named off some of the guys they knew from watching it with their dad/brothers. Sometimes asked who someone was. The best was when I had my Batman figures on display in my bedroom and a girl saw them and was looking them over telling me how awesome it was. Then she unbuttoned her jeans and opened the fly of them and she had a batman logo on her panties. That was a good night!

My mom is fully aware of my collecting and will text me pictures of far flung Walmart displays to see if I need any of the figs. She also was the one who supported my brothers Jakks collections for many years too.

My friends are always stunned, especially since i mostly have flashbacks. Most of them ends up playing with them, which is awesome! People even take pictures like it's some figure museum. Haha nothing but positive reactions.

I collect MANY different toy lines, and have a toy room in my basement for display. Its roughly 15 feet by 15 feet. floor to ceiling with toys. A lot of people know about it but haven't seen it. When they do get to finally see it. They are taken back. Mostly due to the amount of stuff I have.
" I knew you said you had a lot of toys, but WOW this really puts it into perspective "
The only person I have ever ran into that never has anything good to say, or simply doesn't get it is my mom. Im 32, have worked at the same job for 11 years, have a nice house, with my wife for 11 years...... and you find it strange I still collect toys? That I need to grow up? Just a few small reasons I rarely talk to the woman.

"You have dolls?"
"I can't believe you collect little muscly men"
Those are a couple of PG insults I have had slung at me from various people. I'd say more, but I would get banned.

When you first walk into my house, you have to either go upstairs or downstairs. If you go upstairs, it looks like your typical nice house. If you go downstairs, the first thing you’ll notice is this. Now, the reactions have varied from the obvious, “you’re a WWF fan” to the outrageous, “you wrestle / box / do MMA!?” and everything in-between. I’ve heard people say to each other, “this must have costs thousands of dollars” or “it’s so sweet of him to put his Wife’s, Daughter’s, and Son’s names on his Belts!!” Guests have always asked if the Belts were real, to which I reply, it’s as real as Professional Sports Wrestling Entertainment. I’ve heard kids asking their parents for one. I’ve heard husbands ask their wives for one. I’ve heard wives ask their husbands for the Divas one. I’ve heard people say, “I always wanted the one Hulk Hogan had back when I was a kid.” It’s a pretty good feeling whenever someone sees my collection in person for the first time.

I let very few people into my home. My family is always supportive of it but it kinda gets ridiculous when I am getting wrestling figures/accessories in the mail almost on a daily basis...
Anyone who would disapprove of what I do (that includes anything) will never set foot in this house.

Most people think it's pretty cool even if they don't understand it much. Over time I've tended to find the people who are extremely negative on collecting have no hobbies themselves.
