(This by no means is a bashing. More of trying to have more of an understanding)
So I recently bought the Elite Dean Ambrose, and I have HOF Stone Cold and Elite John Cena. These figures have jean outfits on but they don't look like jeans aside from the color.
I feel like Mattel can put some kind of design on the pants to make them look more like jeans. They look the same as the ones that Rey Mysterio is wearing. They don't have that jean "material" look.
These figures mostly don't have a lot of deco on them anyway so maybe they can add some type of feature to make them more real.
What you think?

Mattel doesnt seem to understand or want to do paint "washes." People have fixed up their jean figures woth watered down darker color to give the creases shading.
They do the same with hair. Ziggler, DDP, and others should have darker roots.
Also with stubble I prefer they dont do it. Dean Malenko and Ambrose both look better without. I feel Mattel tows this line between making figures that look realistic, but colored cartoonish.

Yeah, with all the things Mattel has done right, there are still some things they do wrong, with jeans and hair colors being right up there at the top of the list.

I think the DM and WM 27(?) Exclusive Austin jeans look good. But I have yet to see a basic jeans mold I like.

it would be better if it was sculpted to have some texture in it, then being a solid color wouldnt be so plain

Sculpted detail would be a good option but no doubt they opted not to do this to be cost efficient as they can look like any kind of pants or jeans with a change of paint.

Like have lines on the mold of the pants to give it that different feature. |

The same reason why Ziggler's hair doesn't have highlights, why certain figures dont't come with the right finish on their attires (Stardust having a flat finish rather than gloss), why Kane's current figures (with demon mask)comes with no proper washes and gloss etc. It costs them more money. It's confusing however because some figures like Brian Pillman and the Ultimate warrior have gotten really good paint apps. I remember they never got the paint app right on the Punk with the buzzcut but the legends 4? Rock and elite 6 Batista had perfect buzzcuts with fades.

A wash for the jeans would go a long way. It's very hit and miss with paint apps on these things. HOF Warrior had highlighted hair, while L6 looks like solid milk chocolate. Mattycollector Andre had a really nicely done 5 o'clock shadow, but on others like HBK they either don't attempt it at all or really botch. E16 Rock's goatee looks like a 12 year old drew it on with a sharpie, but other figures look incredible.

Like everyone has said, the paint apps are all over the place. Remember the beautiful stubble fade on basic 21 Mason Ryan? It was incredible. Now we have Elite 41 Dean Ambrose with a beard that looks like a Little Rascal trying to pas as an adult.
Jakks figures in jeans were wonderfully painted. In fact the RA mold was one of the best sculpts Jakks had in it's arsenal. I'll grant you that most Jakks molds were somewhat ugly, but jeans looked like jeans and not those weird no-hip having bell-bottoms on basic 29 Stone Cold.

Good luck. I'm still waiting on the big wig who said lets make rubber jackets so that noone can actually play with our toys to get overruled. Maybe he is detailless denim man as well and they'll kill two birds with one stone?

Both of the figures you referenced have accurate coloring. |

They're really stingy with doing paint washes. They do them sometimes for hair (Warrior, Jericho) but when it comes to jeans, they all look cartoony or just get by with darker colors. That's one of the few things Jakks undeniably did better than Mattel - jeans and washes in general.

Is dry brushing an effect you can replicate with a factory machine? There must be a reason they dont do it. Any figures out there have decent looking jeans?
