Does anyone else find it strange that WWE will not allow Cody to use the Rhodes name?
It just irks me whenever i see him advertised as "Cody". I get it, trademarks and copyright, and all that mumbo jumbo. But couldnt they grant like a one time release for this situation? Quite frankly its heartless not too. Dusty made the name famous, and you would think WWE would want to honor him by allowing his son to use the name, even through all the legal red tape. Its little things like this that make WWE seem way more like a money hungry corporation with little heart.

They should let him use the name but given that he basically bashed the company right after leaving (doesn't matter if he was right or wrong) I can understand them not doing him any favors.

He should be able to use it. He's Cody Rhodes, son of Dusty Rhodes.

WWE owns the name. He will probably just go by "Cody" LOL

They won't let him use Rhodes, but his wife can. How does that make sense?

They won't let him use Rhodes, but his wife can. How does that make sense? Because "Cody Rhodes" is the trademark not "Brandi Rhodes" nor is "Rhodes". Maybe he should go by "Cross Rhodes" or the spelling change. Rhyno did the spelling change and so did Taz.

Wonder if Kody Rhodes would work. I like the idea of keeping the Rhodes name as spelled if possible.

And i know this thread is borderline TNA discussion, but the reason i made the thread is because i was irked by WWE's part in it.

It's disgusting IMO. I love that he still uses the name despite not being able to legally. For example, all of the video for PWG Bola says Cody R. But he has shared the footage of Brandi doing his introduction where she calls him Cody Rhodes. I hope he doesn't find himself in legal trouble for doing so but more power to him for doing so anyway and giving the company a big you.

He said in a recent interview that he was working on getting the ok to use his name and that he didn't want to go by Cody Runnels because he never met his plumber grandfather lol. He also explained that when he was in high school he wrestled in the state finals or something and used the name Cody Rhodes on tv. So he might have a case showing that he used it before they trademarked it. But hopefully they can come to an agreement.

He should be Cody Rhodes. Hell, all wrestlers who made their name in WWE should be allowed to use their same name elsewhere. It kinda feels insulting to our intelligence when we have to call them something else.

Its a ridiculous situation. I can see it when its the intellectual property of WWE in the sense of it being something they made up totally....ie Diesel, Razor Ramon,Undertaker,Stardust etc.....but Cody Rhodes. C'mon. .........unfortunately its the world we live in. I wish him all the best in his new company, I'm sure he'll find a way to make it work. If Matt Hardy can reinvent himself, i know Cody can.

Codie instead of Cody? I think it's ing disgusting, really. Not letting him use his family name after how much Dusty did for WWE despite all the crap they made him eat.

He said on Sam Roberts' podcast he is just going to go by Cody and he isn't going to mess with it. I guess he used the name Cody Rhodes as far back as when he was in high school, so there might be some legal grounds for duel ownership, at the very least, but he said he'll just be "Cody" for the time being. So that's what I expect at Final Battle and when he shows up in TNA.
Do I think it's petty on WWE's part to try and prevent these guys from making a living after they leave WWE? Yes, to a degree I do, especially after so many sad post-WWE stories. However, this isn't anything new for WWE and it doesn't shock me at all. Guys are going to always find a way around it, and WWE really isn't going to press it once those guys are gone. I think we've seen that kind of change back though to the way it was with guys like Joe, Nakamura, Aries, and Roode. So in viewing it that way, it seems like WWE should let Cody call himself whatever he wants.
