i think, if anything, this just shows their desperation for attention in a business that is dwindling. too little, too late. they'd need a complete creative rehaul to fix things. and i don't just mean roman reigns' character.
You're definitely onto something. A total creative overhaul would be needed to make wrestling popular again, if it's even possible to make wrestling popular again. And I think it starts with the roster. I look at some of the roster and I think, "This guy is one of the best in the world? This guy is WWE material?" Not to mention the current creative landscape.
WWE is doing everything they can not to lose viewers. But they're not willing to do everything they can to gain substantial viewers. That would involve real risk.
I feel like once NJPW gains traction state-side, we will see WWE do just that.

Vince will put Reigns over Cena and then Cena will come out and praise him up and down in an attempt to win the younger crowd...a torch passing of sorts. It's hilarious that they've tried similar things with him already, and they expect Cena to be the magic potion to help Roman get over. Roman is as over as he'll ever be, probably at any point in his career. He's reached his peak. If they wanna turn him, that's another story. I disagree. Roman has the ability to be a HUGE star. We've already gotten a taste of that. When Roman wasnt telling jokes or being Super Cena, but was kicking ass as a part of the Shield...he was the most over with the casual fan and still over with the hardcore mark. Hell, the year before his first Rumble win...dude was tossing people out of the Rumble like a one man wrecking crew and was SUPER over. The formula was set and organically grew. Sadly, Vince took that momentum and changed Roman into a replacement of Cena and it sunk. The last thing the hardcore mark wants is another Cena. I dont think the overwhelming majority of casual WWE fan is really into him either. Cena is much like Hogan of the 80s. That formula doesnt work these days in terms of crowd response. While the hardcore mark is definitely lower in numbers, they are louder in voice. Keep in mind, Cena was really over in his rapper days...which started as a heel gimmick. The best thing for Roman and WWE is to turn Roman heel. When he starts to turn suck heat into real heat into hardcore marks cheering him....THATS when you being the slow ascent to a face turn...WITHOUT hanging him with the Super Cena gimmick. And yes...I think this rub by Cena is gonna fail miserable...ESPECIALLY if you have him shooting on Roman. That promo he cut on Monday did ZERO for Roman, but garnered a pop for Cena.

I honestly believe that Roman needs to be more silent and less talkative. Look at the night after Mania the crowd were booing him out of the building and all Roman did was take it all in and then respond with 4 words and that drove them nuts.
Think about it Cena can ramble on and downgrade him but all Roman has to do is kick his ass at No Mercy and prove that actions speak louder than words.

I feel like that promo was way too one sided and awkward to be entirely planned. Shoot or not, everything Cena said about Roman was accurate. He has been pushed way beyond his ability, way too fast. If it had been a much slower build for him he would not have seen this backlash. In the Shield he was hidden behind two better workers and talkers, and nobody hated him. But when they split and he didn't get his own identity, and was booked to kick out of multiple finishers, chairs, finishers on chairs and even literal brass knuckles to the face, it was very clear that he was going to be Cena 2. Personally, I just don't want to see another wrestler booked that way ever again.

I think WWE has gone all-in in all ways with this match. From the idea that it's a B-ppv and that they've jumped straight to these kinds promos, it shows to me how desperate they are with this match. I think it's simply "controversy creates cash". I don't think WWE is happy about addressing these things publicly, but that it's "for the greater good". Both Reigns and Cena make enough money that they can get over stuff like this if they don't like it.

Reigns is a smoke screen. The real big dog the wwe machine is behind is Brauuun.

I thought that promo was really mixed. I mean, it was a unique exchange, but I can't stand promos littered with insider terms. WWE should never try to appeal solely to the smarks. They're a minority, and it makes no sense to appeal entirely to a minority.
Sure, kayfabe is long dead, but the product itself should still uphold kayfabe.
