I bought a lot of belts on eBay. They smell like an ashtray. My fault for not asking but also the seller didn't self-disclose. Any tips on getting the smell out? Can they be gently washed?

Dawn dish soap and warm water. Let them sit for a few mins then dry them out. Works for me.

I have purchased hundreds of figures and never received smoky figures and then in the last month my last three purchases have come reeking like an ashtray. I put the figures in a Ziploc bag with some dryer sheets and a paper towel that I hose down with fa breeze. Leave them in the bag for about a week

One time I bought a DC Direct Robin figure off EBay, and it stunk like cigarettes... badly. So badly it made my entire computer room stink. I tried scrubbing it with several soaps. I tried the baggy with a dryer-sheet method. I even tried spraying it with cologne. Nothing worked.
The only thing that eventually worked was time. After so many weeks in a home without cigarettes, it eventually faded.

Sometimes I sell stuff and people are like hey wtf this smells like smoke. Am I'm like...I don't smoke :/
I guess your stuff can get stinky even from neighbors smoking.

You can put them in a tupperware container or ziplock bag with some baking soda.
I tried the dryer sheet method, but to me they came out smelling like dryer sheets, which is a smell that I had just as much smoke. Baking soda neutralizes the smell without leaving behind any other odors, so that's been my go-to.

Dip your hand into a bowl of hot water and then pee on it.

I can confirm that dryer sheets work as well. Kust wrap the item in one and let it sit

I second the baking soda method. I’ve used it in the past to get the smoke smell out of figures, books, etc following a house fire. Works well.

Thanks, everyone. Soaking these things in Dawn. It's lingering. Gotta go to Target tonight to get some baking soda and dryer sheets ;

I just check them every day or two until the smell is gone. Baking soda is pretty harmless, so there's no harm in leaving them in there a little longer. If the smell is really strong or you're doing multiple belts/figures at once, you may want to change out the baking soda after a couple days. But that's just a guess, since I've never done more than one or two items at a time.

I've NEVER been able to get the cigarette smoke entirely out of a toy.
It seeps into the plastic, and it will also seep into the plastic of anything you store it with. I would 100% ask for a refund; you're fighting a losing battle.
If you can't get a refund, relist them fully disclosing that they do have a smoke smell, and hopefully you'll at least get some of your money back.

I ordered a Teddy Long BAF off of ebay and it reeked of smoke, so I just let it sit in a Ziploc full of uncooked rice for a week and that absorbed the smell.

I got a lot of old 80's M.U.S.C.L.E.S. rubber figurines and they reeked of smoke. I put them in dish soap for days, didn't help. I put them in bleach water for days, didn't help. I then tried submerging them in Febreeze for about 2 weeks. They now smell like Febreeze but not smoke. Smoking sucks and it stinks things up to high h3ll.

In my experience, the best way to get rid of the smell of smoke is to leave the figure/item outside/in the fresh air for a few days (out of direct sunlight, obviously). It usually does the trick - especially if it's been quite windy(!).
It's SO annoying when you order something and it arrives stinking of smoke though... I always leave the seller neutral or negative feedback and/or often return the item.

Honestly I just let them air out on their own. This goes for both figures and belts.
