Hello everyone! The title pretty much explains all. While I'm 99% sure this has been a topic of discussion in the past, it hasn't been brought up recently so will hopefully be just as refreshing as a new topic. I've seen discussions related to this escalate very quick before, but let's (try) respect how each of us gets the most enjoyment out of this hobby I started off as a loose collector (as I'm sure most of us have). About 3 years into the hobby, I got Elite Series 20 Chris Jericho for my birthday and immediately opened it with excitement. Regret came over me the second I ripped it out of its packaging. For the first time in this hobby, I viewed a figure like a piece of art rather than a toy. The incredibly stiff jacket may have played a part in this, but after seeing a few collectors report the jacket splitting completely in half or the arms becoming loose from attempting to remove it, there was no way in hell I was about to do the same. I didn't (still don't) have a very ideal way of displaying loose figures without them being exposed to dust or fly excrement. But it was too late. The figure would remain well away from my box of loosies, but exposed to the elements on my shelf. The transition to being a MOC collector was extremely difficult over the next year or two. Fighting the urge and instincts from the years before proved to be very tricky! Hahaha. But my love of collecting never showed any signs of slowing down. Overtime, I begun to appreciate the packaging design more and how cool the figures looked already posed inside. I feel a misconception some people have towards MOC collectors is that we only collect for the purpose of gaining value. Hope that by sharing my personal experience, more of those people can understand. I love a good loose collection regardless and if that's how you best enjoy this hobby, more power to you! I still buy the odd loose figure now and then if I find a good deal, but never open something unless I buy two. Buuuuutt, I broke my own rule recently and decided to take the piss out of myself for the sake of a YouTube vid! In public no less! If you're a fellow MOC collector, please don't be mad! I explain my reasoning during the video. This is NOT clickbait and haven't seen anyone else attempt this same idea before. The figure in question is now up for grabs in a FREE GIVEAWAY. The rules to enter are simple. #1 - Subscribe, #2 - Leave a Comment with a Timestamp for Your Favourite Clip Shown, & #3 - Get the Video to 50 Likes! The winner will be chosen at random if all above criteria is met. Good luck and hope you enjoy!

That's hilarious dude. Got a great laugh from it, although mostly out of sheer amusement of watching people go "WTF?" at you just wiping out halfway through the store. I really don't think any of them cared about the figure. Still really funny though. And as for the figure itself? Yeah, that's a pretty blah exclusive. One of the least popular they've made, if this years poll is anything to go by. And, as for your question in the post, I am the exact opposite. See, I used to keep certain figures MOC. I did... in a tote. They were figures which I was afraid to open because they wouldn't be worth as much. One day, I sat down and I thought about my MOC collection. I examined my motives and realized that, yes, I was only keeping them MOC to maintain value. But by that point, I had come to a point in my life where, after several regret-laden trades or giveaways, I realized I was going to keep all the stuff I bought from there on out and never sell. When I came to those two combined realizations, I opened every single one of the figures in that tote that I didn't have a loose duplicate of. Those figures are now sitting on my shelf, proudly displayed and I love them. I'm actually getting enjoyment from them! Since then, I never leave anything MOC, outside of the duplicates that I have a loose figure of and I have two unopened figures from Unrivaled Series 1 that I'm keeping MOC (Jericho and Brandi) because I fully intend on getting loose versions of Series 1 when the re-release comes. The Brandi is a trophy, locked in a Defender on my wall, and the Jericho I'm not opening because I bought him before I found out about Jericho's latest... um... stuff and now I'm not sure I want him on my shelf. I'll probably put him in the tote where the few remaining MOC figures are. I also have a single, lone NECA figure of Marty McFly which I'm not taking out of his box until I can get ahold of a matching Doc figure, if that day ever comes. It's the only NECA figure I've ever owned and with it being my only one, I don't really have a spot on my shelf for it, so it can stay MOC.
My figure shelf is in the corner of my living room (I have a small apartment). Right now, from where I'm sitting, I can see it. This is a photo of my viewpoint right now... And here is a recent Shelfie
(I'm such a proud figure mama)
And when I look over and see it, it brings me joy. I'm extremely proud of that shelf and all the work I put into fixing it up and building the risers and stuff. And soon, once things settle down a bit, I hope to offload that horrible CRT Monstrosity and entertainment center to add a second set of shelves so I have room to grow. (Plan is to hopefully get a wall mounted flat screen, but one step at a time)
Far more joy than I ever got when I was hanging carded Buffy figures on my bedroom walls. Oh, and sidenote: I never thought about how some people might like the display factor of MOC. I always thought it was strictly about value. I will say, action figures sure have come a long way in how pretty their packaging is, although even when I was a kid collecting Turtles figures the cards were pretty dynamic.

Mostly loose, but I like having a few MOC pieces because I like how it looks. Toy shop nostalgia. Often the newest purchases.

I collect loose. I long ran out of room for MOC. I collected MOC for the first 3 years... most sat in totes I couldnt readily enjoy. One day I got a wikd hair and said I'm just going to do it. I opened about 200 figures that day. Trash everywhere. It was a weird feeling of relief actually. I purchased my first two detolfs and had them all set up in a week. I condensed a room floor to ceiling of boxes and a few totes to two detolfs and one tiny tote of overflow/accessories.
This was years ago. I now have only 10 MOC figures. Mostly because I haven't gotten around to opening some new Ringside gets. But I do still have a sealed Slim Jim Macho, a sealed Kane/Undertaker RSC Exclusive, and a sealed Mr. T. simply because I enjoy the box art. I have kept the boxes to all my RSC exclusives in a tote in the attic. But other than that I now have around 500 lose figures on display on shelves in my office. And i'm glad I did it! I dont have to worry about box condition when receiving mailed figures, pay less in shipping on 3rd party purchases, and over all I can see everyone I have and enjoy them without having to go rummage in storage. I went ahead and opened all my Marvel Legends and what not too. Its a good feeling, though I know i've devalued some stuff... the collection is for my own entertainment. I dont plan to get rich off of it any time soon.

Everything is loose for me. From a display perspective, I enjoy seeing the rosters grouped by eras, and the ability to pose the figures and take in the full detail of the figure. I do have maybe 10-15 boxes, mostly Retrofest or RSC exclusives, that I kept. But those might go at some point soon, since I can't see myself ever displaying anything in-box.
I realized about 5 figures in that there was no way I was keeping these figures in box with how large the boxes are. Even loose, I'm reaching a point where I'm about out of room for figures.

Not that I don’t have some loose around, but I am fully MOC for elites. If I have a loose elite then I also have it MOC.

All my Mattel are MOC and I’m really starting to run out of room. Really don’t wanna unbox. the majority of my Hasbro is loose. I only have 8 MOC but I have loose duplicates of all MOC besides Purple Heart Bret.

All loose for me. Since these are 3D objects, I can't just let them sit partially obstructed in a box. Plus, I use them for figure photos.

Both. Used to be mainly loose. Then pretty even split but now I’m mostly moc.
A nicely displayed moc collection looks so good.

I would buy 2 to do both loose and MOC. Luckily I have the income to afford it but it does become a bit much as far as space goes. If I had to choose, I'd go loose. Posing them on the shelves is always fun.

Always been a loose collector, though for certain figures such as exclusives, rare figures, or ones with cool looking packaging, I keep the box even if I unbox them. The only things I keep MOC are duplicates of ones I already have loose.

Loose. Sometimes wish I was a kid again. I miss playing with my wrestling figures and booking shows and ppv. I used to put 30 figures behind me and grab one at a time for my royal rumbles. This way I was always surprised who came in next. I wrote everything down too.

Loose. I don’t get MOC logic. It takes up space and you basically purchased just to stare at it. You might as well print a picture of it.
