I'm sure this question has been asked before but does anyone have a suggestion for a first anime? I hardly watch TV as it is but I've always been interested in anime due to my liking of comic book art. Any ideas? That's a pretty tough question. There's thousands. Give us some background of what kind of movies/TV/books/comics you like and that way we can whittle down the options for you. The movies I generally enjoy are just drama or action. Anything from The Dark Knight to The Social Network. I also enjoy Film-Noir type movies a ton too, would be awesome if I could find some anime in that area. Hopefully that's enough to go on.

Well the go to anime for action/story would be Fullmetal Alchemist (and FMA Brotherhood). But a few off of the top of my head other than those. Death Note (Heavy drama, dark). Ghost Hunt (Heavy drama, borderline horror). Eden of the East is solid, the main story is the most important, but it's backstory of the group trying to create a program called Eden which profiles every person in the world is very Network-ish. The main story is more drama filled. The Getbackers is another cool one, where you really can't figure out who's good and evil throughout. Read up on those and see if any peak your interest. If so watch 'em, if not lemme know because that's just a small sample. I think I'm nearing 200+ full series at this point. If you're into more off the track things such as maybe stories that have drama or action, stuff like Soul Eater are good. But start with Eden, Fullmetal Alchemist and Death Note, I've got a perfect record of recommending those to new fans and wound up loving them. Death Note is an absolutely stellar story, the premise is something else. Nothing better than a good God Complex story.

I've watched the first few episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist so far, definitely a good series. Thanks for the recommendation! Was originally kind of turned off by the whole idea of human resurrection, as it seemed too bizarre to me, but super happy I stuck with it and continued.

Well I mean, the idea of alchemy has been around forever, and an honest study of alchemy was bringing the dead back to life. It's just in the anime, alchemy's real and not impossible like it's study in real life is. Both Alchemist and Alchemist Brotherhood are great. I recommend you watch both. Not sure how far you are into it, but without spoiling there is a very important scene involving Hughes and Mustang, and at that point Alchemist and Brotherhood split into their completely different series. Good stuff.

I hardly watch TV as it is but I've always been interested in anime due to my liking of comic book art. Any ideas? Its overly popular now, but Attack on Titan is sick! If you can, watch thr Japanese dub with english subtitles. The english dub waters down the story. Also, i have to recommend DragonBall. Its a long long long series. Bit its very worth it. The two new movies are also very good, but you can't jump in there without seeing the series first.

I just got Paprika on Blu-Ray. I saw it years ago when Starz or Encore aired it, but it was in SD with subs. I had forgotten how great this movie is. I wish I would have gotten it years ago. It is amazing in HD on a 50" TV with surround sound. I can't wait to get my projector, this is definitely gong to be the first thing I watch.
My next purchase will be Lupin the III: The Castle of Cagliostro. I've been wanting The Woman Called Fugiko Mine for a while but I'm on a bit of a classic anime thing right now. Here's hoping we get a US Blu-Ray release of Tokyo Godfathers...
Are there any classics you guys can recommend? Personally, I prefer movies but I can get into a good series too.

How far back we talking classics? Because if you want 90's shows, I'm pretty sure most people here have seen Kenshin and agree that the Batosai/Shishio arc is some fantastic writing.

Go as far back as you'd like. I'm fairly new to anime so I'm looking to consume as much as I can. I wasn't exposed to much anime when I was younger but whenever I'd come across some I loved it. And for whatever reason when I was in my late 20's I decided to dive in head first. I couldn't get into Inuyasha, Eureka Seven and DBZ. I've never seen any of them from the beginning so that might have something to do with it and I was a lot younger when I saw a few episodes of DBZ (the edited Cartoon Network ones).

Problem is some of the "Classics" don't necessarily hold up well, see: Monte Carlo. I can list stuff from 97-06 which was the equivalent of the "Boom" period that wasn't something like Pokemon or Dragonball Z breaking the boundaries. Anime that is classic without being overly outdated: Rurouni Kenshin Cowboy Bebop (Hate it, but everyone and their mother loves it) Death Note (big American version coming soon...might as well) Fullmetal Alchemist/FMA Brotherhood Bleach (again, can't stand, everyone loves) But anime that's not quite classic but has a nice cult following: Fairy Tail Beck School Rumble Soul Eater (can't recommend this highly enough) One Piece DNAngel Deadman Wonderland Spice and Wolf Rin Devil May Cry Full Metal Panic Attack on Titan (new, but mega popular so get used to it) Pretty much any of them.

Started watching Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid because it sounded similar to Soul Eater but it quickly turned weird and soft porny so now I'm re watching Muv Luv Alternative. Soukyuu no Fafner: Dead Aggressor - Exodus 2nd Season and Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai are pretty good but I'm really waiting on the next Durarara!! season/series to start which I think is in January

I really need to re-watch/finish Black Butler.
Isn't there a new season now or something? Last one I remember was that puppet one.

I know there's a live action Black Butler.personally I haven't seen it but I believe changed the character of Ciel? to be a female. Wonder if this was done to get away from the yuri? feel/undertone of the anime.......personally anime to live action just don't look/feel right Dragonball maybe the worst ever,Death Note was decent but the shinigami looked meh at best and Attack on Titan looked just bad and Parasite wasn't to bad, remember I'm talking their Live action movies and those are just my opinions on them on the other hand I do really do like all the anime versions of the movies listed.

The problem with anime being turned into a movie is two, actually...something Death Note tried to rectify. One being what DN tried to do. Some anime is 30+ episodes, so trying to fit that into a 2 hour window doesn't work. Death Note made 3 movies, so 6 hours was more applicable than 2 but it still fell victim. Second, you gotta remember who the movie is catered for. Take the American DBZ atrocity out of the picture. Why were those movies huge in Japan and not here? Because Japanese movies are incredibly different compared to American/Western movies. They're bad to us because we have much higher expectations of the film industry. You want a good live action that kept relatively solid and was good? Watch Beck's live action. The actor they got for Koyuki made me wanna throat punch someone but everyone else...Chiba, Ryuske, Miho, Soka...great castings that made the film good.

Very well said and I totally agree but I also should have mentioned despite the quality flaws I liked the films (except Dragon Ball) and the one change they made in Attack On Titan killed the movie for me. I believe I'll go watch Attack on Titan anime again when I get thru Black Lagoon.
