Don't get me wrong, I'm all for people getting tattooed... I'm just down for it to be good, and legal.

Well, I got my first tattoo today, pics up tomorrow. It was completely random, I went to my friends and she went to get hers, payed 20$. Its the outline of michigan on my ankle area. I'm really happy with it. I hope like you don't get staph or any other nasty disease for free kiddo. Honestly, $20 sounds kind of cheap.

That springs to mind the old saying, 'cheap tattoos aren't good, and good tattoos aren't cheap.'

A lot of people seem to be bashing people who get "illegal tattoos," you should keep in mind that tattoos weren't always legal in every state, there are still people in Oklahoma that refuse to work in shops. Some of the best work I got done in my room, completely clean, everything sterilized, great work. Some artists don't like to work in shops for one reason or another, or in some cases work out of a shop and do a little work on the side, everyone has their reasons. Not every one who works outside of shops use dirty needles and homemade guns. Infact I've had nothing but sub par experiences in tattoo shops.

That springs to mind the old saying, 'cheap tattoos aren't good, and good tattoos aren't cheap.' That reminds me of an ordeal I went through with a co-worker this week. He came to me with some questions about getting his first tattoo, and I felt like I should try to point him in the right direction. He wanted to get a tree with his wife's name and the names of his two kids. I personally didn't like the idea, getting your wife's name just seems like horrible idea to me, maybe because I've never seen someone that didn't end up regretting it, but he had his mind made up. I told him which shops in town I knew about, the good ones, the bad ones, and the ones that I had no idea about. We talked about the design he had in mind, and I told him that what he wanted was going to be a bit bigger than he originally wanted, and it would probably cost double what he had planned on paying. A couple of days later he shows up with some shitty looking tree on his arm that has the names placed beside the branches. The whole thing is about 4 inches big, and looks horrible. I asked him "Why did you get it so small?" and his answer was "It was all I could afford" I can't ing stand people that make decisions like that. I'll wait it out until I have enough cash to get my piece done proper, and I think everybody should. The best part? He went to one of the shops I warned him about, and he bitched to me about them having hardcore porn pictures on the wall. I told him to avoid the place, I told him that it wasn't his kind of shop (the kid is easily offended by anything sexual) but he didn't listen to me.

Not every one who works outside of shops use dirty needles and homemade guns. Infact I've had nothing but sub par experiences in tattoo shops. As far as I know, for a long time tattooing was illegal in Oklahoma, only recently (I think in '07) was it deemed legal. Plus, you have to be at least 18 to even enter a shop in that state. Why do I think someone should NOT get tattooed by somebody illegally outside of a shop? Common sense first of all. The risk people take in getting tattooed outside of a shop include high risk of transmitting disease/bloodborne diseases which can easily be fatal, and that's besides the fact that the artist might have no health training, not be licensed, and not be professionally trained. I get what you're point is, but the ease of being able to find a reputable shop in this day and age can't be disputed - and not using that to your advantage is ridiculous. If you've only had subpar experience in shops, I suggest you take your time picking a shop, and artist. Why anyone would take a risk to get anything done outside of an inspected, well kept, award winning shop is absolutely beyond me. That reminds me of an ordeal I went through with a co-worker this week. He came to me with some questions about getting his first tattoo, and I felt like I should try to point him in the right direction. He wanted to get a tree with his wife's name and the names of his two kids. We talked about the design he had in mind, and I told him that what he wanted was going to be a bit bigger than he originally wanted, and it would probably cost double what he had planned on paying. A couple of days later he shows up with some turdty looking tree on his arm that has the names placed beside the branches. The whole thing is about 4 inches big, and looks horrible. I asked him "Why did you get it so small?" and his answer was "It was all I could afford" I can't ing stand people that make decisions like that. I told him to avoid the place, I told him that it wasn't his kind of shop (the kid is easily offended by anything sexual) but he didn't listen to me. Tell me about it, my brothers ex wife got this monstrosity on her calf... I can't even explain what in the it is. Anyway, she said she was going to a local shop here called "Bob's" - the owner is one of the worst artists I've ever seen. She told me it'd be fine. For the longest time she went on about how great it was after getting it... and from her vantage point, I guess it looked okay. A couple of weeks ago she bought a digital camera, had someone take a picture for her, because it's on the back of the leg, and she was so upset. The line work on this weird tiger thing with wings is terribly bumpy and not connected - the shading and color is horrible... and worst of all, it's a tattoo that is less than a year old and the cheap inks the guy used have already faded pretty bad. Hell, I have an ex girlfriend who's 'baby's daddy' got a huge, ugly, terrible quarter sleeve tribal/star thing done IN THEIR KITCHEN. The guy then thinks, 'hey, this seems easy' and with no training, buys a kit off the net and tattoos a huge bright red flame thing from his wrist up his forearm. I'm with you bro, if anyone wants a tattoo I think they should research their shops, and save their money for a piece they can truly be proud of.

I with everyone else. If you want something nice save the money. Don't just go to a guy who has a shop and will give you want you want for cheap. I shake my head when I see my cousins. She let's her buddy tattoo her...they look like she spent 20 years in prison...

That sucks for your cousin, but I've been getting quality work from a friend of mine for about 4 years now, he usually only does guest spots in shops and does a lot of work outside shops, as I said earlier, Oklahoma has only legally had tattoo shops for 3 or so years. Before that tattoo shops were only open due to a loophole found in the law, and before that tattoos were usually done on the "dl."
Anyhow, he comes over and sets up and does everything that he does at a shop only in the comfort of my own home. Plus I get the friend discount.
Though I will say he doesn't tattoo minors, drunk people, etc.
So I guess my situation might be a little different than someone who's paying 15 dollars for something. I rarely have a session that's under 100 dollars.
The only reason I'd go to a shop now is if it was for a specific artist, Niko for example.

^^ yeah that is a little different. Basically this friend of my cousin's went and bought the tattooing kit and ink (he only gets black...). Then he was like "oh let me do one on you"...it's really crooked and shit. Her poor girlfriend thought she was getting something quality. Like this girl has always wanted a tattoo and dude was like "I got this" now she has this ricketty ass looking thing.

The guy that did mine has done like hundreds of tattoos, he just doesnt want to drop like 300$ for a license. He has a whole tattoo room in his house, all his crapwas sterile, I watched him open everything infront of me. The dark area is where it bruised a little cause I moved a little bit. It was swollen a little last night, but it went down, now it doesnt even hurt. He said my skin takes ink really well.

Alright. I'm not even going to argue. However, going to someone who isn't certified by the board of health, and is unlincensed is a ing stupid idea.

Not to mention a licensed artist is legit, and can charge prices that reflect that.

Where did you get the outline for the state? It doesn't look that good. My leg right by my ankle. You guys are haters, like honestly, I think it looks good, it looks like michigan, and thats what I wanted, its simple, its clean, and its legit, just because he doesnt work in a shop doesnt mean he doesnt know how to tattoo. The part that looks bad is a bruise, I'll post pics when its 100% healed. By the way, I talked to my mom about it and shes not really even pissed, she was just surprised.
