I'm guessing it's more a USA/UK rivalry thing more than anything.

what I can't figure out is why the media is portaying the game against England as the big one? I want to beat them, but as I said, this world cup is about USA soccer finally getting respect, both in the world, and heck, here in america. Maybe because they are our former rulers?

did they really though? It was my understanding that the rules were written in cambridge, but the game had been around for a very long time in many parts of the world As far as I know it was invented when Saxons kicked around the severed heads of their defeated enemies, but that may well just be a legend.

I think between 1775 and 1783 we took care of any questions they had about our ability to "play with the big boys"

The Cambridge thing is true. I looked into it last night and the game as we know it today was founded in 1863 by the Football Association. In the US they played rugby and football, before combining the two to have their own American Football. Other variations such as Australian Rules followed too.

Im expecting England to beat USA, dont think it will be a one sided match though.
But the beauty of the World Cup is that anything can happen!.

Heard Great news this morning, Gooch and Jozy to play on Saturday. I can say this, I dont get why all the people from England are acting like a superior team. England is ranked 9th in the world. The USA is 14th. Its going to be a lot harder then you think

I will be heading in to Edinburgh city centre for a few drinks tommorow to watch the France vs Uraguay game. Going with 3 french folk and a itailan, should be fun! Uraguay to win 2-1,They will take a 2-0 lead and France will score in the last moments of the game after heavy pressure. Really not sure about the Mexico vs South Africa game though....

The USA is 14th. Its going to be a lot harder then you think Since when is it "all the people" from England? It's mostly the media and a few loyalists who actually believe we can win. BTW, we're actually 8th, France is 9th. Anyway, England/USA will be a tight game. I'm probably being biased when I say this, but I'm thinking 2-1 England. Either way, it's pretty much certain the US and England will advance. Not sure how much further they'll get though....

FIFA world rankings don't really mean much.

FIFA world rankings don't really mean much. I'm not saying they do, I was just correcting Sabin.

I take your point, but clear flaws like Portugal being ranked 3rd in the world mean few notice the rankings. For the record, I'm defending England pretty strongly in this thread, but I'm not one of the people that think we're guarenteed to win. I think we have the ability to win, but I don't think we will. IMO we will come 3rd.
