Coming from a 100% Penn nut-hugger... I feel like BJ is finished. Just looking at him before the fight...he doesn't look like "The Prodigy" anymore. Frankie Edgar put on a hell of a performance, and earned every ounce of gold they put on his shoulder after the figh...mugging. I literally fely my heart sink into my stomach watching BJ in about the 3rd round, because I realized he's given up on himself. I'm normally a nervous ing wreck during the main event fight of ANY card, but this one was extra special since it was my all time favorite stepping up again...but he just didn't come to fight, and that's all Frankie came to do, and all he did. Edgar looked incredible, and I'm extremly proud for him, his family, and his trainers(hear that James? Ya dick. ) Penn needs to take a "Couture Hiatus" and take about a year to figure out what he wants and needs to do with himself. Jumping to WW isn't the answer, amd honestly if he's gonna be performing like this...then fighting period isn't the best option either. That is, IF he still gives a sh*t about his legacy. I'd hate to see Penn 'Liddell' his record.

I'd hate to see Penn 'Liddell' his record. Ouch.... ;D Yeah, that would be pretty awful if he turned out like Chuck...I just hope B.J. doesn't turn to Dancing with the Stars or something embarassing like that...

It just feels like BJ doesn't bring his explosiveness to some fights, while he does others. You never know what version of BJ you're going to get anymore.
That said, hell of a fight by Edgar. Great gameplan, well executed -- his cardio is crazy.

If anyone wants to read my response to Couture/Toney, you can get it here. For the gist: I don't regret picking Toney and I'll sit back and eat my humble pie with a smile. So throw a stone if you've got one.

If I picked someone who got friggin' schooled the way Toney did, I know I'd regret it. Hell, it already happened. When I picked Forrest over Anderson. That backfired big-time and I totally regretted picking Forrest in that fight. For all the people that picked Toney, now you all know how it felt when I picked Forrest. I felt ashamed and embarassed. And that's how you should feel too. Toney put on about the same disappointing performance that Forrest did against Anderson, actually I think it was way worse, but that's just my opinion. James Toney's MMA debut was a disgrace. Pretty much all there is to it.

Very happy with the entire card. The only fight I wish had gone different was Nate Diaz winning. I was honestly hoping Davis would own him like Maynard did.
Maynard continued to prove why he's a top contender and I'm really looking forward to his next fight with Edgar. Edgar will definitely push the pace, but I think Maynard has the hands and wrestling skill to pull the W again.
Maia was impressive in his win. I was hoping for some more resistance from his opponent, esp since they said he was both a wrestler and a BJJ Black Belt. Didn't seem like he had any skill in either, just knew how to get a couple escapes. Was a good fight to watch though.
Couture winning was just priceless. I was honestly scared that Toney would just run out and start slugging instead of staring blankly at Randy. Seeing as a punch was his only chance at anything. However Couture did exactly like I knew he would, esp when I saw him wearing the spandex shorts(easier to shoot, why do you think GSP wears em). Low single snatch to pound to sub. I was kind of hoping for a front head choke like Hughes did in his last fight, just to let the true wrestler in Randy come out. I honestly expected Toney to actually try to get out, and maybe even use his strength to shove Couture off getting that head position for previously mentioned choke. But instead, Toney did his best impression of Kimbo and laid their like a turtle. I can't even give Toney a hats off for stepping in there. I've watched him his entire boxing career and this was just a sad excuse for a paycheck(light one at that for him). He didn't even throw a punch! lol.
Edgar vs Penn was a toss up for me. I would have been happy with either outcome. I like both fighters, but naturally I sway towards the wrestler over the bjj, and to see the wrestler dominate made me even happier. Edgar really impressed, took Penn completely off his game. I honestly thought Penn was getting sluggish by the 2nd round, but then I also felt that wasn't a cardio issue, that was mental demise. Getting taken down like that from a great wrestler when you aren't used to getting your ass handed to you is demoralizing. Even more demoralizing when you're one of the best BJJ guys in the game. On top of that, his BJJ was useless. Yeah, he held the butterfly guard, yeah he pulled a leg up a time or two and tried for advancement with no luck, but he never even really tried. One can argue he was trying to bait and feel for position, but the only thing that seemed to be on his mind was keep from getting punched and keep from passing. Sounds familiar, but Penn didn't seem to find what he was looking for.
All in all a great set of fights.
Just an observation based off many fights I've watched over the years and something I've really been paying attention to recently. It seems most BJJ fighters have no clue when it comes to take downs and take down defense, nor anything about wrestling. It also seems that most of the wrestlers either don't know, or don't know how, or just don't utilize their basic wrestling skills and positioning to get take downs and subs. But I am seeing more and more wrestlers starting to see the angles and start doing what comes naturally. Yes, I think subs are natural for a wrestler(atleast they are for me).
Another observation, and this goes for boxing and mma both. The Jab, and even the straight, are very underutilized. Straight inside punches break and wear down the head. Ultimately do more damage than swinging for the fences from the outside every time. Also, body shots are very under utilized. Most of these guys when they take somebody down and get in the guard shouldn't be fighting hand control and shooting for the head shots(not saying they shouldn't attack the head at all), but instead, they should beat the piss out of the body. You break the core you break the mind. You break the mind and everything else seems to follow.

It was boring as hell and he really just layed on him. Did not engage to much. Nate was getting pissed. I am in no way shape or form a fan of either guy BTW. I really am not trying to pick a fight with you either. You are free to see fights as you wish but I am just giving you some insight from some who was there that night. Also, A lot of people were booing that fight. I laughed at how Nate said he wanted to fight him again. I think the outcome would be the same. I hope they do fight and he this time he knocks that in lisp out of Nates mouth. Nate belongs in Strikeforce or some local card with the rest of the white trash because that's what he is.

While I don't remember the fight 100%, I do remember Gray doing very well against Nate in the fight. I know he wobbled him on the feet and took him down with ease. He just never played into Nates strengths and pretty much controlled the fight his way. It wasn't very fun to watch, but yea, I'd say he did own Nate.

eh I don't really watch MMA too much but I love watching Penn go but tonight he looked a lot like he could care less about what was going on. I hope he makes a good decision about his future and doesn't tarnish his legacy.

Im very disappointed that my favorite LW and one of my alltime favorites BJ Penn lost AGAIN. But I was very impressed with Edgar. Im not a bandwagon jumper, I still dont like him all that much but I give him his respect. Id love to see Penn face either Sotiropolous or Gomi again. That would be cool. As for me picking Toney, I dont regret my pick or feel ashamed, haha. Anyone who says I should feel ashamed for that is an idiot because why would I be ashamed for being wrong about a fight> Its not like my life is over now. I took a chance and I was wrong. I dont care. Not to mention anything is justifiable in a sport like this where anything can happen. I knew Id get bashed fr picking him but so what its all good. ZI never cared what people thought of me before, haha... Good fights tonight, I really hope BJ comes back with a few more great fights before retirement...

Did anyone watch the post-fight press conference?? I'm interested to hear what James Toney has to say for himself after such a pitiful performance. I mean, he was talking HUGE smack before the fight saying he's going knock-out Randy and calling Randy "princess" and all this sh*t. And yet, when it comes fight-time, he gets ing SMOKED!! He got embarassed. It was hilarious. Once it went to the ground, Toney was a fish-out-of-water. He was screwed. I knew WEEKS ago that Randy would take him down early and lock on a choke and choke his ass out in the 1st round. And my boy, certainly didn't disappoint. I still can't believe some people had THAT much faith in Toney. What do you think of him now?? He didn't show me jack-sh*t in that fight other than how to take a beating and get choked out early. LOL. I was at a bar watching the fights last night and there was this one, lone James Toney fan in there. Chanting his name and everything. And even after Toney got obliterated, he was still like "You have to give him credit. You have to give him credit". And I was like, "Give him credit?? What the fu*k for??' I ain't giving him anything because his performance was ing pathetic. Randy's takedown was effortless and he had a pretty easy time keeping him down and pounding on him and I think he had an even easier time locking up the choke and making Toney tap-out. I don't think Randy broke a sweat in that fight. All it took was about 3 minutes of Randy's time to make a mockery of James Toney and I ing loved it. I'm sure Dana White loved every second of it as well. I wonder who, if anyone, Toney will fight next...I mean, losing your MMA debut in such embarassing and decisive fashion like that, has to put him at the bottom of the heap for sure.

^ Yeah, I don't like Nate Diaz much either, but there is absolutely no question that he deserves to be in the UFC. He certainly impressed the hell out of me last night for sure. An awesome win for sure.

I'm actually a fan of both Diaz brothers now, as much as I used to ing loathe them. I like how Davis basically caught Nate while Nate was showboating and brought out the killer in Nate. Nate is pretty good but still isn't as good as Nick, he can't pull off the showboating like Nick can. But man, anyone who says the Diaz brothers lack punching power can't say anything now. Davis got messed up something bad.

Davis, who's known for his vicious standup, was picked to peices by Nate's striking. He may not have one punch KO power, but I don't think he needs it. I can't wait to see him fight agian. Nick as well for that matter.

BJ was great last night, but Frankie has undoubtedly taken over the number 1 spot. Sad to say, but i think BJ's best days are behind him. He doesn't seem like he wants it as much and to be honest, theres not much more he can do besides beat GSP. With that said, i can't wait to see Grey Maynard take the belt.
James Toney was hilarious.
