Well, just 6 days away now from another UFC PPV and its UFC 124. The coaches of the latest season of TUF will battle in a rematch for the Welterweight title. There are also a bunch of pretty nice matchups on the card as well, with trashtalker Sean McCorkle going against 6'11 Stefan Struve and Thiago Alves vs. John Howard.
Unfortunately I will NOT be watching this card live because I will be in New York City seeing RAMMSTEIN live! But I will catch it on Sunday possibly and give my thoughts on it then. For now, I'll give my predictions and thoughts on some of the fights.
UFC 124 "ST-PIERRE VS. KOSCHECK 2'', 12/11/2010 (PPV/UFC.com Stream/ESPN-UK)
Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec Canada
1. Lightweight bout: Pat Audinwood vs. John Makdessi
2. Welterweight bout: TJ Grant vs. Ricardo Almeida
3. Middleweight bout: Joe Doerksen vs. Dan Miller
4. Welterweight bout: Matt Riddle vs. Sean Pierson
5. Middleweight bout: Jesse Bongfeldt vs. Rafael Natal
6. Lightweight bout: Mark Bocek vs. Dustin Hazelett
7. Welterweight bout: Thiago Alves vs. John Howard
8. Lightweight bout: Joe Stevenson vs. Mac Danzig
9. Lightweight bout: Jim Miller vs. Charles Oliveira
10. Heavyweight bout: Stefan Struve vs. Sean McCorkle
11. Welterweight Championship: Georges St-Pierre (c) vs. Josh Koscheck
- I really hope my friend and gym-mate Ricardo Almeida bounces back from the tough loss to Matt Hughes. Shame I can't be with him this time around, but I know he will do well and win by submission in the first or 2nd round.
- While I do respect Joe Doerksen, I think he will be outmatched on the ground by Miller. Miller has some sick choke submissions and I fully expect this one to hit the ground right away. This is one of my candidates for submission of the night.
- Hazelett at lightweight is a much better idea, I think. He's pretty tall and will have a good reach advantage, but more than that, he'll be against wrestlers most of the time, and that will set up one of his sick submissions that he usually does. He made a HUGE mistake standing with Paul Daley for a bit, but I know he'll learn from that.
- I REALLY have no ing idea who will win between Alves and Howard. I literally flipped a coin to decide. Both are great standing up and I expect this to be a kickboxing match. Seriously, I think either guy could win here. Tough call.
- Expect Stevenson to drop to 145 after he beats Danzig. He'll have better success there, because he can't really hit that peak at 155. Danzig is a tough guy to finish, so I expect a split decision win for Joe Daddy.
- Struve will finish this fight in round 1. McCorkle has been saying some really stupid things to, I guess, get under Struve's skin, but it won't help once he's in there with a guy who is 6'11 and can strike from anywhere. The biggest thing with Struve here is to keep his distance for a short time, then fake a leg kick and go for the big right hand KO.
- Not much I can say about GSP vs. Koscheck. I think it will play out pretty much like the last fight, with GSP mostly dominating Koscheck with takedowns and probably getting the better of him while on the feet. There is honestly nowhere in this fight where I think Koscheck has an advantage. With this one being 5 rounds, I can easily see a finish for GSP by submission in the later rounds.
