You can't compare fielders to pitchers. Position players are on the field every single day (essentially), starting pitchers pitch once every 5 days. Like it or not, the picture is the MOST important position on any baseball team. The game lives and dies by how well your pitcher is performing. If Derek Jeter breaks his foot running the bases, there are 8 other batters on the team that can pick up his slack. If CC does the same thing there are not enough "ace" starting pitchers that can replace him. On top of that, pitchers put enough strains on their arms, shoulders, hips & legs throwing 100 pitches a game. They don't need to add swinging a bat & running bases to that. Yea I know some pitchers say they like hitting (CC, D-Train, Arroyo, etc.) but it doesn't matter. Most pitchers are AWFUL hitters, and I like seeing my team SCORE RUNS. Not lay down sacrifice bunts. Not to mention being a DH extends careers of some guys. Exactly. You can replace literally almost everyone else on the team, but not the performance of a true ace starting pitcher. You can't just get that type of performance from a fill-in player. And in the Yankees case, obviously you can't replace Rivera....but lot's of other teams do bullpen by comity. If Derek Jeter is injured, Nunez and Pena can play. If Curtis Granderson gets hurt, Gardner can play Center and Ibanez or Jones can play left. If Swisher gets hurt, Jones or Ibanez can play right. If Teixeira gets hurt, Swisher or Chavez can play 1st. If Cano gets hurt, Pena or Nunez can play second. If A-Rod gets hurt, Pena, Nunez or Chavez can play third. If Martin gets hurt, Cervelli or Romine can play C. If Gardner gets hurt, Jones or Ibanez can play left. And anybody on the team can be a DH on any given day. But if CC gets hurt, you can't just have any jabroni step in and fill his role of winning 19 or 20+ games. This is why I don't want my starters batting. If they get hurt, you can not replace them. That's not true of every team. Look at Ryan Howard. He's injured. Who are the Phils replacing him with? A group of guys who can't even come close to Howard's productivity. Look at someone like Pujols. Does anyone want to see him get injured scooping up a grounder? Or running the bases? Do you want to see him throw out his shoulder throwing out a guy at 2nd? No, I don't want to see Halladay get injured running to 1B. I don't care if he's headed there because he's just laid down a bunt or he's headed there because some other player has and he's covering the bag. That doesn't mean I want a designated fielder right in front of him so all he has to do is pitch. I think it's BS that a professional athlete can't be expected to run the bases without blowing out his ACL. I'm sorry, I don't buy it.

Yeah, and don't you wish you could have Thome bat 500 times as a DH this year, instead of pinch hitting him for 1 AB per game after the stupid pitcher strikes out 3 times?

No, I don't. I'd rather have a purer form of baseball with more strategy. I've said this before, I'd rather see a 1-0 game than an 8-7 game. I realize I'm in the minority.

More power to you. You enjoy your "pure" form of baseball with the pitcher striking out 3 times a game and bunting balls off their eye sockets, and I'll enjoy my form of baseball where my team leads the league in most offensive categories again.

You're right. No NL team ever leads the league in most offensive categories. Oh wait.

Here's an idea. Why not move the mound further back AND give the players metal bats. Lots of fun then!!

Add metal bats and you increase offense significantly. Plus, you fix the problem of bats shattering all over the place. One of those things is going to kill or significantly injure a prominent player one of these days and that's no joke. Everyone wins.

But a ball bouncing off a metal bat is less dangerous then a piece of wood falling off a bat?...

But a ball bouncing off a metal bat is less dangerous then a piece of wood falling off a bat?... It's less dangerous because every player in the field is looking for a ball coming off a bat. They're not looking for a piece of wood flying through the air. They're set up to react to a ball coming off a bat.

Sat down and figured out how to sync the Phillies schedule to my phone so I get notifications every time a game is on. Sweet. Will probably get irritating about week 2.
