I saw The Conjuring 2 in the theater. I'm over the whole possession/excorcisms thing. Like zombies and found footage, it's just been done too much. That being said, I liked the first movie, and this was an ok continuation of that. If this is the last demonic possession movie I watch, at least it was a well made one. I personally can't wait to see it myself. As far as horror sequels go, it was solid. I liked the first Conjuring, not as much as a lot did, but I liked that it focused on characters and tension over random jump scares (Which I hate). The second one goes for the jump scares more often than the first, but also still has likable characters since they return from the first. You are still rooting for them, unlike most modern horror films where everyone is annoying and you want them to die. The overall narrative isn't as strong or interesting as the first film, but it's definitely still good. Like I said, I could have used less of the cheap jump moments, but they still do really try to bring in the tension which makes it a much appreciated effort. For a horror sequel, I was surprised at how good it was. If you like the first, you should enjoy this one.

Glad it was at least solid unlike some of the other unmitigated disasters we've been given over the years though.

It really helps that the two main characters and actors came back, and that since they're based on a real couple that had cases (whether you believe in the stuff aside) there was actually source material to go back to. The director of the first also returned. So it leaves you with a combination horror sequels generally never have. I think they can still pull off a decent third movie considering there is "real life events" to go off of.

Anyone excited for the new Purge movie? The Election Year concept seems just too good to pass on.

Anyone excited for the new Purge movie? The Election Year concept seems just too good to pass on. The Purge movies are shameless smut, and I love me some shameless smut. I'm not a huge fan of the first, it was decent, but it was a pretty generic by the numbers home invasion flick. I've seen dozens of those, a lot done better. You want a fun, enjoyable example of that, check out You're Next. Mix of a home invasion and slasher movie. Pure awesome. The second Purge was really fun. It was so ridiculous, stupid and over the top it was fun. The action was great and Frank Grillo was a badass. The third looks like more of that, so I'm down

I watched a movie called Funhouse Massacre, which was about six serial killers who escape from their cells on Halloween and end up wrecking havoc at a funhouse. I thought it was a great idea, but the movie wasn't too serious. It was gory, but not too serious, kinda like Evil Dead 2 or Deathgasm.

Lights Out
This was a surprisingly effective horror film, and likely the best I've seen so far this year, at least top 2.
It's a pretty jump scare heavy film, which usually doesn't sit well with me, but this film gets a pass, as the situation in which the thing that is stalking the characters makes it so you kind of need to do them. They managed to still pull out tension from a lot of scenes, so I applaud them for that.
Coming in at a brisk 80 something minutes, there's no filler at all in the movie and it's paced very well. Additionally, the characters are actually rather likable, and you pull for them to get through everything. The boy, his sister and her boyfriend are all quite good and developed well. The small cast means that even with such a short run time you get to know them.
The acting is solid across the board. The kid is a bit stiff but you can't always get amazing child actors. The sister, played by Teresa Palmer is the standout.
There are some inconsistencies with the abilities of what they're facing, but the movie as a whole was good enough that it didn't bother me too much.
Overall a very solid horror film, that delivered a much more enjoyable experience than I was expecting.
8/10

Not sure if it's considered horror, but I watched Green Room this week. Solid movie, with some pretty brutal kills.

I watched "Drag me to Hell" last week. It's not a ridiculously scary horror but it has its moments and has an element of comedy too. I enjoyed it, very well paced, didn't drag on at all, good mix of horror with slight comedy and solid acting. 7/10

Just got the recent Fright Night 2 on Bluray for my collection coming in the mail as I was a huge fan of the 80s version but the remake with farrell kinda sucked no pun intended but if I recall 2 was very well done and only had one part I disliked .

I actually liked the remake. It was fun. The original is good, but if you revisit it, I don't think it's that great. I enjoy it a lot, but it's more noteworthy for it's effects than anything. The remake was enjoyable. Anton did a good job, Farrell was having fun, and Tenant was a blast. I honestly put the two films about even.
