Would you compare Katy Perry to John Lennon ^^^^^^^^^^^^? I'm not racist by any means. I just think its weird that alot of white kids are into black culture and hip hop more than they are Rock N Roll. I just don't get what so cool about the urban thing. All money and partying imo. I'm more mentally aware than that, thats why i liked Cobain. Just thought he had a sharp mind and was socially aware. Guns N Roses with a concious as alot of Euro mags called Nirvana, weird but gets the point across. I just like serious, singer songwriter, artsy music. Mark Mulcahy Thorne York Michael Stipe HAH...So by asking me that...You're saying that you're comparing Nirvana to John Lennon? Cobain has been compared to Lennon by Paul Mccartney dude, not to mention David Fricke at Rolling Stone who has great taste in music haha. Mccartney even called Kurt a genuis, like numerous other respected artists have. What great artist has Katy Perry ever been compared to? Who with merit has ever put her over as being anything more than the flavor of the month?

You obviously don't listen to enough rap. Also considering that Rock came directly from black culture/music it is outrageous for you to say that rock is a more acceptable genre for white kids. If only one race had one music then no music would ever grow. There is alot of amazing music out now along with a huge amount of amazing rap music.

Love their work. This isn't about blacks or whites. These is about urban culture, i hate it. Amazing rap? Highly unlikely.

Mainstream music in the 80's wasn't much better when bubble-gum craplike Madonna, Cher, etc were dominating radio. You can't tell me for one minute that radio back then was all hard rock'n good ol music.

The 90s were totally different, regular people doing whatever the they wanted. Cobain and Yorke like them or not did whatever pleased themselves and that was allowed on the air! So cool imo. That freedom of honest music is sorely missed. I wasn't comparing Perry to John in terms of genre, just honesty.

Listen deeper to the music before you put it in a box. I do though, i give everything a fair shake. I've always hated Eminem. Too much vulgarity for the sake and thats not my deal.

That freedom of honest music is sorely missed. I wasn't comparing Perry to John in terms of genre, just honesty. There was still a lot of (imo) trash polluting the radio just like now. You had bands like Smash Mouth, Chumbawumba, Aqua, I'm sure there's more... Shakira started getting popular in the 90's I believe. My point being is that the MAINSTREAM is always going to be ing terrible because the people who listen to exclusively mainstream music are not music fans, they use it essentially as background noise for their day. They don't listen to it to enjoy music. there will always be the mindless crap. ALWAYS. From the 60's till today there is always the garbage on the radio to appease the people who don't actually listen to the music. You can't pick on todays mainstream music for being worse than other decades, it's more of a problem that with the internet and stuff it is so much more... potent I guess you'd say than it has been in years passed but garbage has always been there just like good, solid music has and always will be there. You just can't be looking for it in mainstream media. While bands like Nickelback and Theory Of A Deadman get airplay there are also solid bands like System Of A Down, Volbeat, a lot of pretty rad music being made and played on the radio too. Just like back in the 90's.

I like what I like. I'm not ashamed to admit that a few nickelback songs or a few hinder songs have made their way onto my ipod at one time another. I don't listen to the radio hardly at all anymore except for one local all rock and metal station so I never hear the stuff you're talking about. I do agree though the last time I listened to an actual main stream station, everything sounded the same.
Putting all rap artists in the same category and saying all rap sucks is crazy.

Is there anything wrong with listening to a dumb song every once in a while? I typically listen to grindcore, black metal, and doom metal (all of these genres have terrible bands as well), but sometimes it's nice to break it up with something simple or even cheesy. Before you say all types of rap are bad, listen to Dalek, the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, or Abdominal.

I listen to alot of punk music and all of it is very intelligent and done for a reason. Now I know that isn't mainstream, but still, if you are looking for bands and music that has a purpose and meaning, then you can find if you look.

I have to agree with the OP, even if you just consider the chart music today, there's never a song in there that's intelligent. I actually put a lot of the decline of mainstreem music down to the x factor. Simon Cowell literally has the music industry in the palm of his hand and he's completely destroyed it.
We used to see bands like The Goo Goo Dolls, Foo Fighters and Matchbox Twenty (whose lyrics were always relevant and meaningful) in the charts, but now we have Kesha, The Black Eyed Peas and Katy Perry instead singing about drinking and kissing other girls.
Today's music isn't about the music, it's about being an attractive person and using robotic instruments and voice modifiactions.
None of these modern artists can sing live at all. This is real music (probably the best beatles cover I've ever heard):

I can tell by the way you're talking about it that you listen to rap with your blinders on, so to speak. Using terms like "Black Urban Culture" and crap like that. You claim Hip Hop is the reason for the decline of intelligence in music, but seem to have zero idea as to what great rap music is or is all about. The 80's and 90's that you're claiming to be superior had some amazing rappers and hip hop artists.

There are still brilliant writers out there, listen to lyrics by artists like Arcade Fire or the Arctic monkeys. Comparing Rock and alternative music of the 80s and 90s to POP music today, Apples and Oranges. Go find todays real alternative music and then we will talk.
