This is such a tired thread, I'm sick and tired of people complaining there there is no real music being made out there anymore, yes i agree with you that there is a lot of crapon the radio but you gotta look further than that to find music with actual substance. If all you listen to is 90's alternative then you my friend are stuck in a rut and you'll always be there unless you broaden your horizons. May I present to you an extremely underrated band that has been consistently writing great music for the past 10 years: www.ign.com/videos/2011/11/02/exclusive-thrice-video?objectid=572355

You mean to tell me Wiz Khalifa or Waka Flocka Flame's lyrics aren't intelligent?

i agree that mainstream music is definitely of lower intelligence, and i believe that hip hop has been used and manipulated in order to be presentable to those of lower intelligence, but rap and hip hop as a concept are actually quite intellectual - as is punk, until it was degraded and broken down as it has been.
there is undoubtedly still endless bands that have the same pride and discipline that you speak of towards those alternative bands of the 90s, they may just not be your cup of tea. there is still a very strong alternative underground in music, you just have to find it.

I think you might really like this short video clip. This is perfect for this topic. It's from my favorite musician, Steven Wilson. He's very well-spoken and knows his stuff about music, its history and production.

It's from the first page, but I just had to make on comment on this here... I also don't understand white kids being so into black culture. Wanting to talk black, listen to black music, just really strange. Yeah, don't tell that to the young white kids digging on Little Richard back in 1955. Reading through this thread, I kinda think of myself at age 13 or 14. At that age, I was really into modern/hard rock, I hated mainstream pop and rap/hip hop music with a passion, and avoided them at all costs. I really was a jaded cynical ass back then. Nowadays, my main musical preference is Alternative, Indie, and Punk music, but I take in a lot of different music. I'm still not too much of a hip hop person, but there are some artists I like. I like some of the local Twin Cities hip hop, not totally the same deal here, but I love the Beastie Boys, partly because of my love for Community, I am a Childish Gambino fan. Also, I have a really strange fondness for the Wu-Tang Clan. I don't know why, but I absolutely love the Wu. Also as of late, I've grown a bit of a fondness for mainstream pop. Seriously, it may not be the most intelligent stuff in the world, or the most artistically credible music out there, but it's just dancey catchy fun. What's the harm in that? -CMD

Just because a musician isn't writing lyrical masterpieces doesn't mean they aren't having fun. I'd rather my favorite musicians write the music he wants to make and have fun doing it rather than exclusively writing deep, introspective lyrics and being ing miserable all the time ala Kurt Cobain.

I wouldn't call you a racist, but you seem very, VERY scared of black/urban culture, hip hop etc, almost like something out of the 50's. As pointed out in this thread, most popular music today comes from black people in the 40's and 50's, spawning rock & roll (which in turn spawned all of your "DIY" bands) and modern rap. Most people get distracted by the beats of a song to pay attention to the words, because it might not have a guitar in it, however, they are still musicians; maybe not in the conventional sense, but it is real music, it has a massive audience, and like rock music - it has good and bad artists. Also, nobody seems to mention the fact that The Beatles (just an example) were pretty much 4 Justin Bieber's in their day, and I'm pretty positive older people in that time would have called them poopty, a flash-in-the-pan rubbish act. However, now we appreciate them. I think the same might have even happened for Nirvana, it was young adults who made them big, and I think their would have been people older than their target audience who might have thought they were a bunch of talentless nobodies, and they want Pink Floyd/The Who etc. back. It's all relative to time, again as somebody said, 80s pop music was probably considered garbage by music snobs in the day, and now it is looked upon fondly almost and "pop music today just isn't the same". Sorry to be blunt but you do seem like a big music snob (especially after quoting a Rolling Stone journalist and saying they have good taste - c'mon man!), and you definately seem very closed off to rap music. God help your future children if they ever brought a black significant other home... The beatles were heart throb teen idols but to say that musically they were a simple and dumb as ing Bieber is silly. Go from '' Meet the Beatles up to Sgt. Peppers and tell me they weren't serious artists. Even their bubblegum poop was really good. Beiber's music is awful, ing awful. Music isn't music without a guitar, drums, and bass people!People just aren't picky enough anymore. 80s pop did suck, i never said it didn't. But compare Benetar and Cyndi to Perry and Gaga and they look like amazing You are so completely wrong on that. Music is not just drums, guitars, bass. That's the dumbest thing I've heard anyone say. Music doesn't need those things to be music.

Guy is very well spoken and really sees things for what they are. One of my favorites too! Everybody in and out of this thread should really listen to this clip. Thanks for posting.

Another interesting post. Rap definitely did not start out as a ''dumb genre'' and i was kidding about the guitar, bass, and drums things people. I also listen to classical music and Cliff Edwards and others 30s musicians. Cliff Edwards for those unaware is the guy who sang '' when you wish upon a star'' for Disney. But was great beyond that. So i'm not small minded. I just dislike alot of rap because of its focus on material possessions and women. I need more than that when i listen to music. Music is a deep introspective thing for me. Nick Drake is another one of my favorites. But to stay on topic, i don't hate all rap. I liked N.W.A. and even more so Public Enemy. Tupac was great. But rap became so damn commercial after his death. Mainstream i mean, can't speak on indie rap because i wouldn't bother. Not a big enough fan of rap to take the time tbh.

Sorry to triple post, really am.
But i want to make one thing clear before i hop out of here. I'm not racist nor do i have a problem with different races enjoying each others creations and art.
I just don't enjoy the urban/street slang and style. Nothing to do with color, didn't mean to make it about color by mentioning blacks. I've rushed in a few of my responses here and made some pretty iggnorant statements tbh.
