But the ratings sucked when Punk wasn't champion, maybe WWE should realise its there overall product that sucks, not one Man!

Really confusing, why would they change the channel during the best segments? His merch sells, he's clearly popular with fans.. doesn't make sense. Sounds like dirtsheets took a look at the ratings and stretched it a bit.

WWE has created their own ratings resistance. I mean, Cena could be booed out of any arena, and yet.. his segments are solid increases in viewers. The few times I've seen the breakdowns It's always 200,000 or more viewers tuning in when Cena's talking or wrestling. I don't like Cena or love Cena but I do know his involvement is healthy for whichever show he's on.

So whereas there once seemingly a divide between the wrestling community and the internet wreslting community, could we assume that nowadays there is a divide between the casual, TV fan who flicks WWE on to see what Cena's saying, and the die-hard fans who go to shows to cheer their guy?
There certainly doesn't seem to be many fans left who just go to a show and get into it as much as possible and enjoy it as much as possible. Nearly every crowd you hear now chants CM Punk, gives the usual Cena cheers-mixed-with-boos reaction, fist pumps and WooWooWoo's, and then sits in silence throughout the rest of the show, maybe cheering the odd Heel who tries to do his best to get heat.

They should have had Kane be the last thing on the show; he's the biggest thing going on right now.

Many ex-pro wrestlers have said it in interviews/books etc..
This emphasis on ratings is slowly making the product worse.
Regardless, I don't believe the report.

As others have probably said, it's not Punk, it's the people he's with.

Passing the title back and forth will make the ratings budge by what 0.1-0.2? As you guys said it's about bringing a solid show on a weekly basis. I mean crappy RAW's with epic endings (Nexus debut) are cool, but nobody watching cares after watching 1,5 hour of underwhelming storylines and matches.
But it's surprising that Bryan, Punk & Ryder didn't make a difference in the rating. The last 2 are big time crowd favorites and all 3 are IWC darlings. But I think we need some time, not everyone watched TLC.

The sad thing is, its probally because Cena and Kane are overshadowing him.

I didn't think ratings still mattered in 2011

If it's from a dirtsheet it must be true!

But the thing is, I'm not sure CM Punk is ever going to catch on. He's a big hit with us Internet crybabies, but we all watch the show anyway. I think a lot of his IWC-centric stuff is confusing and repellant to normal fans who don't read the newzsites for insider gossip. That may change, and he has stopped overdoing the insider stuff for the most part, so if the shareholders are alright with it, I'd like them to keep the title on him until Elimination Chamber and see if his segments start to improve. I often wonder how the insider stuff and the jokes relevant to himself and a few of us that remember the 80's would go over long term. I also remember thinking by the week before MITB if Punk stuck around how long the awesome promos could last. As I said before, dropping the website opinion put into this article, I do hope WWE sticks out any short-term pain to see these guys through. They must realize the work-horses need to be switched out every now and again for the good of all involved. Perhaps Punk's confidence in his tweets about "change" mean that he's in the know backstage. A great NASCAR driver once said that you're doing something right if the fans are making noise for you, cheers or boos. Cena is the perfect storm if you like him or not. You either tune in to see him because you love him and wish him well, or you despise him and tune in to see him fail. Either way, you're tuning in and that equals ratings.

The problem with Punk's reign (so far) is lack of competition. His biggest rival is John Laurinaitis of all people. Blame him, cause that guy is as boring as they come.

This was never reported in the Observer, not even close. Please stop reading crappy copy and paste sites. Just read the actual Observer site.

Boys who are saying "ratings not the champion's fault, it's the time of year" did you even read the first post? It's not about the entire show underperforming, it's specifically about Punk's segments rating terribly. WWE gets segment-by-segment ratings for the show, and if people are tuning out for Punk's parts, that's bad news for his prospects as a top babyface. The main event babyfaces are the ones who pull the numbers for the show, usually. kingnothing gets it, and punksnotdead makes a good point that WWE might have to think longterm on it and take the hit on ratings now for the sake of building new stars. But the thing is, I'm not sure CM Punk is ever going to catch on. He's a big hit with us Internet crybabies, but we all watch the show anyway. I think a lot of his IWC-centric stuff is confusing and repellant to normal fans who don't read the newzsites for insider gossip. That may change, and he has stopped overdoing the insider stuff for the most part, so if the shareholders are alright with it, I'd like them to keep the title on him until Elimination Chamber and see if his segments start to improve. this x100. punk may be our savior, but i think he'd have started catching more attention by now if he was going to be bigger in terms of star potential.
