As you can see up top, Black Keys will cover the January 19th issue of Rolling Stone on the strength of their new LP, El Camino, and its critically positive reception. Given that shine, Keys drummer Patrick Carney doesn’t disappoint. An excerpt: Rock & roll is dying because people became OK with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world,” he says, blowing cigarette smoke out the window of his rented East Village loft a few days before the band heads to L.A. “So they became OK with the idea that the biggest rock band in the world is always going to be crap – therefore you should never try to be the biggest rock band in the world. that! Rock & roll is the music I feel the most passionately about, and I don’t like to see it ing ruined and spoon-fed down our throats in this watered-down, post-grunge crap, horrendous crap. When people start lumping us into that kind of crap, it’s like, ‘ you,’ honestly.

They're right, the whole music industry knows they're right. There's a reason bands like Black Keys and Arcade Fire keep getting bigger. They worked hard and aren't the product of major labels pay offs to radio and tv. Thank ing god it's finally changing.

As much as I love the Black Keys, and have for years, Patrick Carney strikes me as an elitist douchebag sometimes. "Blowing cigarette smoke out the window of his rented East Village loft "....please. The Black Keys are "mainstream" now...accept it.

I don't understand the nickelback hate. then you probably never will...unless you're like 12 and then it's understandable. anyways, i'm not even big on the black keys but they certainly know whats up. that's pretty ing rock n' roll of them. nickelback couldn't be any more contrived commercial trash, and anyone who can't see that is not looking deep enough or doesn't have the rationale to comprehend it.

The Black Keys are "mainstream" now...accept it. Yeah they are mainstream, he isn't saying he isn't. But it's taken YEARS for real rock music to finally get back to arenas like this. It's been dominated by crappy metal and major label trash rock for years. The legacy acts don't count. So what if he comes off like an elitist dick? It's been that way in music for years. I don't want every band I love to be the band I can see myself drinking with. Patrick Carney plays music well and has made his life about doing that. Look at someone like Cee Lo. He was respected for YEARS; now the guy is another musician out for a paycheck anyway he can grab it. Not that I'm against money making; but I still have more respect for the guys who are solely going out doing what they do for their music. You don't see the Black Keys blasting their songs over anyone that throws money to them. They're popular, but they haven't sent their music to Glee. You apparently don't get his point that people have called them "sell outs" because they're popular enough for arenas. Which they aren't. They're just really popular now, and thank god, bands like them need to be bigger.

I guess I've never heard anyone call them sellouts (if anyone has, they're idiots that's for sure, the Black Keys have not altered their sound to please anybody) and I don't get the comparison to Nickelback. Who's compared them to Nickelback? To quote Bobby Heenan, "That's like comparing ice cream to horse manure". As much as I love the Black Keys, and have for years, Patrick Carney strikes me as an elitist douchebag sometimes. "Blowing cigarette smoke out the window of his rented East Village loft "....please. I haven't even heard anyone except WWE talk about Nickelback's newest one. It makes me happy to see Nickelback's popularity winding down, as bands like the Black Keys, Cage the Elephant, and even though I don't really like them, Arcade Fire start to take off.

I am not a Nickelback fan per say, but I do not understand the hate they get. It's just that "hate it because it's popular" mentality. It's annoying. If you're in a band (a band that is getting PAID mind you), and you aren't striving to be the biggest band in the world then it ultimately just sounds like you're making excuses as to WHY you aren't the biggest band in the world. I like music. If a song is good...it's good. I don't bother with the radio of the video channels because I don't want to get burned out on songs therefor a lot of the songs that it's "cool to hate" might stay fresh and decent in my eyes. I'll never conform and listen to something just because it's "different". Most of this trendy "you're cool if you like it" stuff has nothing catchy about it and I'm not gonna force myself to listen to boring hipster crap just because it's not getting played on the radio. If all of these bands have no desire to not be the biggest band in the world and it's truly "all about the music" then I dare them to hand their next ing paycheck right back to whomever signs it and tell them "no thanks man...it's all about the music"./

How about the fact that their songs are terrible and the lead singer's voice annoys me more than when my microwavable dinner is done.

Pretty clear that they're quite popular considering their record sales. Some people are so incredibly over the top with their hatred for them that I think it's pretty obvious that they're a "hate them because they're popular" band. And again...I'm not a fan. I know little to nothing about them. But I think it's perfectly clear.

El Camino is one of the best records i've heard this year. Nickelback suck and are fading out, atleast here in Britian. But the bands are hard to compare, The black keys are much more mature song writers, to me they don't get lumped into the same group as nickelback.

You are one of those people who latch onto "unknown" bands and fly with em. I am no fan of Nickelback, in fact they ing suck, but for this guy to act like he is on a whole other level is asinine. I don't consider this band to be great "rock" music. Everyone has their own opinions on music but c'mon. Black Keys, Arcade Fire as great rock artists? Hell no. Bands who work hard should get recognition, but dumbass pricks like this guy don't deserve anything. Every band works at their job even the bad ones. It's just some people hate for no reason. Also the term "sellout" is such a ing cop-out it's not even funny. Well they went to make more money "sellout". They licensed their music for a commercial "sellout". So the next time you take a promotion or pay raise I'll gladly call you a greedy, selfish, "sellout" because you know, money isn't the main goal by everyone in the world.

That's like saying you'd rather eat a balogna sandwich on plain white bread instead of having a toasted footlong sub from a local deli that makes fantastic sandwiches.
