What people dont realize (usually because they are cheap) is that waiters make about 3 or 4 dollars an hour, which is basically taken away with taxes. They work on tips and if people dont tip them, then they dont make a living. I tip anytime I go out.

I completely agree with the people saying that tipping is subjective based on service. If I get amazing service, you will get an amazing tip.
I fully understand how hard of a job it is. I also understand that if it's important for you to get tips, you will work hard for them. Just expecting it is a joke. I never feel obligated to tip. If you earn it, fine. If you don't, don't cry about it. Work harder next time. Feeling entitled to a tip regardless of performance is wrong, in my opinion.

You have to screw up pretty badly to not get my 20% but if you do...you get two pennies.

Reading comments from people that think like this thread's creator really make me hope that some of you never leave your house. Ever. Please, for the sake of our world, don't leave your house, and don't you dare have children.

Yeah, because the fact that people think performance should dictate tips clearly means they're not meant to procreate.

Thank you for that very vague description of your opinion.
Some here said that they feel like they shouldn't ever tip a server and/or that they don't tip more than a few dollars unless the server just blows them away. I feel like those that can't afford to or don't want to tip their servers fairly shouldn't ever go out to eat. Like I said, don't leave the house.
Common sense.... lost on most here.

Sometimes a "fair tip" is no tip at all.

Is this topic really still alive? Wow...
If by some chance the person waiting on you is extremely rude and treats you like garbage or something, I would understand leaving a very small tip. With that being said, I don't think I've ever had a waiter or waitress be so awful that I straight up didn't feel like they deserved a tip at all. Unless something weird happens, I generally believe that if you don't plan on tipping, you shouldn't go out to eat. Simple as that.

I always plan on tipping....pending at the very least passable service. It does take something pretty huge to not give a tip at all. I've only done it once. There was a waitress who legit only took our orders. She didn't bring our food to us (someone else did), she didn't revisit the table to ask about our meals or drink refills, nothing. What did she do? Stand on the other side of the divider and talk to her friend about a bunch of nothing. That, my friends, is a waitress that gets not tip from me.

That actually makes sense!
The first post here is nothing like that. That is what I have a problem with (along with Milencolin's views on life in general)...

But my problem with with the thread is on the other end of the spectrum. I really detest this idea that no matter the service, a tip is "deserved". It's not. My server doesn't have to jump through hoops with flaming shoes on, but piss poor service and expectation of any sort of tip just doesn't add up in my book.

I tip if the waiter is friendly, if the meal is good and if I get the meal in a reasonable amount of time.

I hate that people look at tipping as a requirement. It isn't supposed to be. I only tip workers who go above and beyond their expectations. Other than that, you're already getting paid to do your job. Of course people look at tipping as a requirement, thats why waiters make $2, they work for tips. Blame our lovely government for not allowing them to work for minimum wage.

Blame our lovely government for not allowing them to work for minimum wage. Absolutely, but it's society that has dictated that tipping is the norm.

I ALWAYS tip atleast 5 bucks. even if the meal is a 10 dollar meal. then i tip more depending on service and the price of the meal.
the only time i didnt tip was when i found a hair in my food and the waitress insisted it was mine and wouldnt get me a new plate.
