Ok, maybe this has been discussed before, but I was thinking, what gimmicks, that have failed in the past, for whatever reason, do you think could have succeeded under the right circumstances? The guy that made me think about this was Waylon Mercy. While the character was essentially a rip off of DeNiro's portrayal of Max Cady in the Cape Fear remake, Spivey made it work. If Spivey had been younger, and healthier, or if he didn't mess up his back in that match with Nash, I think the gimmick could have had a longer term run.
The match that ended Spivey's career

honestly, i did expect more from Waylon Mercy...he was one of the few "pre-Attitude" gimmicks that had an edge to it...the other being Goldust....shame things ended like htey did...

Alot of the problem was Dan Spivey's best days were behind him at this point and his knees were in really bad condition, I think he retired not long after that.

I would've liked to see Dolph do a take on Waylon's gimmick back when he was introducing himself to everyone.

Matt Bourne as Doink the Clown. That would have been one of the best gimmicks at the time but they fired Matt and killed the Evil Doink gimmick.

I love Waylon Mercy's theme. I often imagine if I were a politician I'd want that as my theme walking through the crowd shaking hands but I'd be nice enough to leave it at a handshake and not turn on them. It would be theme only no Spivey talking.

Sean 'O' Haire with all those vignettes back in 02? 2003, but yeah, I was going to say him, but we had a whole thread dedicated to it so I was going to leave it alone. I agree with this though.

Waylon is #1. I wouldn't really call Doink a failed gimmick, it was pretty successful for a while. I'm going to date myself and say Adrian Adonis' effeminate gimmick. Could have been a a great heel gimmick (almost like a Hassan gimmick, only playing on people's predjucie of effeminate males), but it turned into a joke.

Honestly, that gimmick would have worked but I never felt like Adonis was the right guy for the part. He was way overweight and had cow udders and we are suppose to believe that he thinks he's a pretty man?

I actually liked that gimmick. I thought he pulled it off well. It was better with him doing that gimmick then when Luger did the Narcissistic gimmick.

Muhammed Hassan. he was great in the ring, and i loved his mic work. He could of went very far if UPN didnt force him off TV. The heat he got was unbelievable.

He is always the first to come to mind. He was on his way to becoming one of the biggest heels of all time. I still feel like WWE should have repackaged him with a different gimmick and brought him back a few months after the Hassan character was forced off of TV instead of releasing him. Honorable mentions: Kizarny & Braden Walker ... just kidding.

Without a doubt, I'll go ahead and say Friar Ferguson. I think the idea of a wrestling monk is pretty cool and interesting. It was a whole hell of a lot better than Bastion Booger, that's for damn sure!!
Friar Ferguson's entrance music was really great as well, as heard here:
It was very ominous and I really enjoyed it. He only wrestled one match on Monday Night Raw and for whatever reason, they pulled the plug on the gimmick shortly after.
Here's Friar Ferguson's one and only WWF match. Enjoy!!

Max Moon was a great gimmick. I also liked Nailz. There were some very interesting gimmicks in the early to mid-90's. Some of them I wish stayed around alittle longer.
Others I liked: Mantaur Duke Droese Knuckleball Mortis (WCW) Skinner Papa Shango
