Id be worried that if they put magnum in a baf, that they would never be allowed to put another legend in a BAF again. Even if you needed all 4 guys to baf , I still think he would warm shelves. He is a collector driven want. Matty doesn't have faith in Diesel/Nash WWF WCW TNA World champ to put him at anything other than 1 per case and i believe .5 Revision case then a guy like Magnum should not be in retail. The best thing to do would be to make him some sort of online exclusive or some sort of promotional deal like a mail away. Matty already pumped out lots of early 80's guys in retail by Legends and unfortunatly it didnt work for us like we hoped. Too bad they wouldnt put him on M.C but i understand why they cant. Like I said yesterday make him part of a TRU BAF set. That way he's limited quantities as he's only at TRU. And if you put him in the BAF set it forces the people who would normally pass on him to pick him up to complete whoever the BAF figure is. It worked with DC and their BAF lines there were a couple clunkers I bought just so I could finish the BAF So far, the BAF at TRU has not crossed generations. Am I correct? The Bret Hart in jean shirts was a more contemporary Hart. I think it would be borderline cruel for Mattel to make someone pay 16-20 dollars for a figure (relatively) few people at retail want just to get a BAF that so many people would want, such as announcer JR. The only way Mattel WOULD use Magnum as a magnet for BAF is if everyone in the set was legends/flashback based with a Bobby Heenan or Paul Bearer type BAF. The only problem with that? The last legends exclusive at TRU is still on the shelves years later.

Guys seriously, for Dean and Bandy, and Niners and anyone else, if this stupid figure does get made, I will buy one just for you gentlemen. I've purchased far dumber things for far dumber reasons, and for people with half the passion that you guys have over this figure. I think it's a terrible idea, and I don't think it will sell, but if it does happen, I'll embrace it. People seem to have an inordinate amount of conviction over this guy making it out, I don't get it, but whatever.

They're the most boisterous, but at the end of the day they barely make a dent where it matters most. I even saw an online Paul poll where he got 70% of the vote. Of course we know how that turned out in the real world. I'm not trying to bring up politics for discussion, just using an analogy.

Why bash something simply because you dont like it? im talking to you punksnotdead and bigbossman. Like really if you dont want the fig then ignore the thread you dont have to come in here and tell other people that their ideas are bad and criticize them just because you dont want what they want.

Like really if you dont want the fig then ignore the thread you dont have to come in here and tell other people that their ideas are bad and criticize them just because you dont want what they want. Maybe you didn't read the poll question. It says, "Would you buy Magnum TA?" The title above was recently changed from that to what it is now. So how do rationalize ignoring something that asks for opinions one way or the other? I should ask, "Do you want govt health care?" And by your rationale anyone who says no should ignore the question and not criticize what we're trying to do. That sure makes a lot of sense, ESPECIALLY for a public forum. It seems like people feel as if they own the space in which they create a thread on public message boards. They think that not only should they be entitled to post their opinions, but anyone who disagrees is "off topic," or rude. Quite the contrary. Not only does the "Magnum issue" effect those who want him, it effects those of us that want what's left of legends to go in a different direction. You can ask or plead all you want for a Magnum TA, not a single post on this thread says otherwise. Yet a lot of people want to blatantly silence those against it by saying, "I didn't want to start a debate," or "you should go away." It's a public forum. I can't stress that enough. I'm a member of this board. This is a thread on a board of which I am a member. This figure being made may directly impact another that I might want instead. I have every right to post on here what my opinion happens to be. If you want to start a Magnum TA revolution without opposition, do it over your PMs.

There aren't a lot of upper-card wrestlers left who have never had a figure made.

There aren't a lot of upper-card wrestlers left who have never had a figure made. There are plenty who have never had a figure made . . . by Mattel!!! It's because of the jakks collection, which influenced Mattel attire choices at the beginning, that we lost the legends line. It's a cold cold irony isn't it? You jakks collectors were only going to get Magnum TA because he wasn't available in jakks, yet the line died because Mattel tried to cater to you guys in the beginning with "new" attires instead of remaking the popular ones jakks already covered. At least that was part of the reason it failed.

They've done it in the bast with DC and Toy Biz did it for years with Marvel. The whole idea for the BAF is to reward people for buying a whole set of figures including figures they might have pass on otherwise. That's what Toy Guru said at the beginning of the BAF lines with Mattel. It would be a perfect place for him. As you said they are a business. They've already dropped quite a bit of cash on the contract & making the proto. And as long as the retailers have ordered the wave Mattel has made all the money they will see on it. And seeing it's a part of the BAF retailers know it'll move to complete the BAF. It's all part of the BAF concept. If you really want the BAF then you buy ALL the figures regaurless who they are. Also like you said I think it's cruel that they are wasting spots on guys like Hawkins, Trent (Whatever his name is?) Teddy Long, Ricardo & Big Johnny that a few hundred people on a message board want in a mass retail line that will just end up rotting the pegs. At least Long, Ricardo & Johney are BAF so if they don't ever get built it's no real loss. But even with the BAF they could have had such better personalities over who they chose. Like you said JR would have been a great choice. As would have Bobby Heenan, Shane and a wrestling attired Vince. There aren't a lot of upper-card wrestlers left who have never had a figure made. There are plenty who have never had a figure made . . . by Mattel!!! It's because of the jakks collection, which influenced Mattel attire choices at the beginning, that we lost the legends line. At least that was part of the reason it failed. The reason Legends failed was because Series 1 & 2 was over produced. The ycame out basically together at the same time as the HOF wave which were straight rereleases of Seris 1 & 2. So that wasn't going to work. The HOF & reg series should have been different attires. Sarge - 1 camo & 1 what we got Steamboat - 1 red & 1 WMIII Funk - 1 red & 1 ECW tights Austin - 1 trunks & 1 jean shorts Dusty - 1 WWE & 1 NWA Superfly - 1 tiger striped barefoot & 1 leapord spot trunks barefoot or what we got If they had don't that then the line would have done much better. And Legends 2-Packs were WAY over produced. My local TRU has received over 30 cases of Legends 2-Packs since they were first released. With Jakks they never received more than 3 cases of any CSTT 2-Pack.

Seems like there's a great idea mentioned by a number of you that would meet the demand for everyone. Either make Magnum the BAF for a highly demanded repaint set: Savage, Warrior [since they both sell so well] and L.O.D. or have him be one of the figures needed to complete a Bobby Heenan BAF.

This sounds smart to me. I'd love a 4-figure legends set of highly sought-after repaints, like Camo Sarge and LOD with Magnum. Put Heenan or Bearer as the BAF. That makes much more sense than using current figures mixed with a guy from the mid-80. But the problem still persists: Will TRU take on another legends exclusive when they're STILL trying to sell out their legends two-packs? A ringside build-a-figure seems more appropriate, but I can imagine each figure in a set costing 35 or more before shipping to pay for the extra guy. It seems that repaints and protos are easier to produce than an entirely new figure. That may be a naive thing to say, I don't know how toy manufacturing works. We need no new face sculpts, just fresh paint. It's pretty clear I don't want Magnum taking up a precious legends spot. But I would gladly buy him if it meant I'd get a piece of Heenan, Bearer, Jimmy Hart, Mr. Fugi, Howard Finkle, 80s WWF ref, MEAN GENE etc while also getting something my personal collection longs for.

Dear MDT, It only took 10 pages, but even the most cynical of collectors among us would be willing to purchase a Magnum T. A. if marketed the right way. chalk one more up for the good guys!

People seem to have an inordinate amount of conviction over this guy making it out, I don't get it, but whatever. I wanted to give an honest reply to this question separately: For me, it's the world's largest toy company and WWE Brand Manager constantly crying about costs going up and not enough budget. Yet they went through the trouble of securing the contract, sculpting the proto, making a production-quality proto, doing the product photography, and slapping it on WWE merchandise. All we ever hear from MDT and every other toy company is that tooling costs are expensive - so they've made that investment. Clearly there's at least 118 potential sales - I know that's not enough to fulfill 20,000 units, but do any of us know what the opportunity costs really are? The figure itself is pretty versatile, the body is a good standard buck. The cowboy boots are normal-sized (not like Dusty or Akeem) that could lend itself to sharing parts with future Texans - Windham, Hansen, McDaniels, Mulligan, and the list goes on. Even the vest can be reused for other figures. From a customizer's POV the face makes a pretty decent AWA Scott Hall. And whether you agree with this or not, Magnum T. A. has his place in wrestling history. You might not consider him a legend and that he was a "never was" but he was a popular wrestler that gave us classic matches like the I Quit cage match with Tully (who is being produced as well) and the best of 7 with Nikita Koloff, and memorable moments like coming back form his accident to support Dusty & Nikita in the Crockett Cup Tag tournament. Like I said before, he's not my favourite wrestler at all (I love surfer Sting) but I understand his place in the business and his action figure itself is pretty damn cool looking. And yes, I know that's subjective.

I would buy Magnum solely to support the line and make a custom, but I think magnum as BAF is a terrible idea and would give me zero incentive to buy all four figures required..but then again, Ricardo gives me no incentive either. but I'd still rather have Ricardo than Magnum...

Don't make him the BAF you make him one of the 4 needed to make a BAF.

I'm willing to spend $20 in the name of not ing up a good thing right now. And the FBs are a great thing.

. Maybe as an exclusive it'd be profitable, but not in the regular Elite line. I never really understand this comment if it's released into mass retail than Mattel has already made their profits. They make no extra money from the retailer's sales. And even if he was a pegwarmer I'm sure it wouldn't kill the line because come the holiday season they'd move just like every other pegwarmer. They are probably losing money not releasing it seeing they've already signed Magnum to a contract and paid to have a proto made.
