Field of Honor ’16 was a smashing success despite having a bit of a weaker lineup when compared to last year’s (which featured Shinsuke Nakamura & Kazuchika Okada). I met six wrestlers and half of them were first time meets. And, most importantly, this was a relatively stress-free meet and greet despite a rocky start. --- Joining me for the show were Jenna and my good friend Erik. We arrived at Coney Island ~3:15ish and walked around the park/boardwalk (we stopped by a couple bars for drinks). After a quick meal, we lined up outside of MCU Park a little after 5 and were allowed inside by 5:10ish. That’s where the tiny bit of stress came from. So Ring of Honor has a policy for their pre-show meet and greets: you must purchase autograph tickets and exchange those tickets to each respective wrestler you meet. They’re small tickets, too, the type you buy at amusement parks (such as Coney Island). Upon entering MCU Park, the first thing you’ll see is the Merch table. Christopher Daniels and Kazarian were working behind the table in efforts to sell their comic. They were also signing other items and taking photo ops so, as you can imagine, it was a bit chaotic. Now just around the corner from the merch table is the autograph ticket table. So a chaotic merch table line has merged with an even more chaotic autograph ticket line. And guess what? There was only ONE GUY working the autograph table. It was so ridiculous. The meet and greet was going to be chaotic because of the NJPW guys alone and they just have one guy working the table? So we waited on this line for about 15-20 mins before it was my turn. I ended up purchasing 6 single autograph tickets. My first stop was Toru Yano of CHAOS, a first time meet. I’m actually not a huge Yano fan because he’s VERY much a comedic wrestler with a reptitve act but he can be funny sometimes. I got him to sign my Official Invasion Tour 2011 program and I loved how our photo op turned out. You know what’s funny: he was pretty much stoned face before the picture. It’s fascinating how the goofiest of wrestlers can come across impersonal. He was polite, though, and that’s all I ask. Up next was Tetsuya Naito. I met him at the last Terminal 5 show but I needed another autograph and a better photo op. Naito is a great freaking guy. He marveled at how young he looked in the Official Invasion Tour 201. I had him sign the No Limit entry before getting an upgraded photo op. Awesome meet. Next was the booker of New Japan, CHAOS member, manager of the Rainmaker, and an overall legend in Japanese wrestling history: Gedo. He’s a repeated guest but I wanted him in this program and, more importantly, an upgraded photo op. Gedo was quiet but very nice and appreciative that I was a fan. Following Gedo was a first time meet I was VERY excited to meet: the NEVER Openweight Champion Katsuyori Shibata I am a HUGE fan of Shibata and if you’ve never seen him wrestle…well, you really freaking need to. He’s one of the stiffest bad asses that I’ve ever seen. Just an animal. He was VERY nice, placed the Openweight Championship on my shoulder, and took a photo op before signing an 8x10. Great guy. Adam “Hangman” Pageof the Bullet Club was up next. He was another first time meet and was an incredibly nice guy. He, too, marveled at how young he looked in my 2014 ROH/NJPW Global Wars program. He was a great guy and I’ll be rooting hard for him from here on in. Next was The Ace of New Japan: Hiroshi Tanahashi! He was the last repeated guest of the evening and, as always, one of the best to meet. He surprisingly had no line. He commented on my Invasion Tour 2011 program. He also included a signed 8x10 before taking this photo op. I told him he was my favorite wrestler and he thanked me. He noticed my “Adam Cole Bay Bay” Bullet Club t-shirt and said, “Tanahashi Bay Bay!” Just the man. The final meet was a first timer, “the Tokyo Pimp” and Bullet Club member Yujiro Takahashi. He was also incredibly nice nice and marveled at the Invasion Tour 2011 program. He signed his entry and the No Limit entry (which was just signed by Naito). He really liked it. We took our pic and I was quickly done for the night. --- A failure story: Mandy Leon and Deonna Purrazzo were signing and taking photos near the dugout during intermission. Just when it was my turn, they were called back. I’ve tried to get Purrazzo like a million times and have never gotten to meet her. After the show, I saw Matt Jackson being hounded by fans as he was trying to cross the street. I believe he was with his wife and you can tell she just wanted to cross the freaking streak without being hounded. Poor people. --- Autographs: Dude how ing tall are you? Lmao

New title to be unveiled soon. I'd like to see the Pure Wrestling title revived, but I don't see that happening.

I think it's a terrible idea to add a 6 man belt, they must be really bending over to impress CMLL.

Cole vs Elgin for the title in 2016. Interesting...though I thought Elgin was in Japan still... That's exactly why he's getting a title shot. Cause ya' know? " homegrown talent....WE HAVE NEW JAPAN GUYS!!!!"

Ouch. Tad unnecessary. Yeah, I agree with that. Lot of trust there for a spot that will probably be forgotten next week.

Watching the ladder war now... Boy oh boy. What a match. I love how these days, it's really like people have learnt from all the TLC Matches in the past and have really got it boiled down to a formula in the indies.
Though, the WWE TLC matches are always lacking greatly.

I got ROH on local TV, so now I can try to get into it. They're showing Field Of Honor right now. Donovan Dijak is boring as balls, but i do like Bobby Fish. That's what I've gotten so far.

Where does it go from here, I wonder... I've heard this match was absolutely insane. I've heard nothing but good things about it which is surprising.

Ha! Brilliant. Building on from the one with Steen Owens... For some reason I can't help but feel as though The Bucks share a bed after seeing this picture..... The thought of The Bucks and Cole/Omega sharing a room and Cole or Omega getting their own bed while The Bucks share one is hilarious.....that's gotta be what happens right?

Why isn't Omega regularly doing ROH? He's the man.

Why isn't Omega regularly doing ROH? He's the man. He's under an NJPW contract. So he has to be loaned out just like guys like Okada and Tanahashi when they work for ROH.

I didn't get a chance to post any of this stuff, but I went to the ROH show on Saturday. The meet and greet was stacked but I didn't realize ahead of time you had to pay cash to meet them. It was Cole, the Machine Guns, Dalton Castle, and Colt Cabana. I have pictures already with everyone but Cabana, but I wasn't going to pass up getting a picture with Cole holding the ROH Title. So I met Cole with what cash I had and then moved along. I love the picture I already have with Dalton Castle, but he was in his full entrance getup and I kind of regret just not hitting the ATM. Oh well. The show was fantastic. I only snapped a few pictures, largely because I was enjoying the show so much I didn't think to take a bunch, but here are the few I did snap and some highlights: Kaz vs Mark Briscoe - The most entertaining match of the night. Some fans to my right kept chanting Randy Orton at Kaz, which was obnoxious but admittedly, Kaz did look like a mini Randy Orton. They had tons of great spots. Highlight, the same fan(s) started chanting RKO at Kaz. Kaz jawed back and fourth with them for a decent amount and finally did an RKO. "Here's your RKO, bitch!" The place exploded. Dalton Castle vs Adam Page - There was a guy at ringside with a service dog and Castle worked the dog in a couple times. It was hilarious. These two beat the hell out of each other though. Lots of guardrail and ringside spots. Page in the BC is still just odd to me. He got the win though since he's enroute to Bobby Fish and the TV Title. I can't help but wonder why Castle isn't the focal point of that TV Title. His feud with Silas Young was so off the charts and he's kind of been coasting since that ended. The Cabinet - Caprice and KK wrestled a glorified job match but it was great. KK is so under rated as a performer and CC was hysterical the whole match. His satire Urkel character really works. They all came back out when Rhett wrestled Bobby Fish for the TV Title. CC and KK got booted from ringside and Fish went over, but the Cabinet is entertaining as all hell. Some guy tried to make fun of Kenny King when he was at ringside and KK made a joke about railing the guy's wife. Needless to say, the crowd started a you got burned chant haha. Kyle O'Reilly vs Jay White vs Dijak vs Kamaitachi - Best wrestled match of the night. I heard one guy say it was the best match he'd ever seen live. It was really good, but I wouldn't take it that far. It was a hell of a match though. O'Reilly worked a lot of submission stuff, and ended up winning with ARMageddon, but it was Jay White who really stood out to me. I guess largely because I didn't care about him before. Dijak is great with his big man spots too. He's going to easily end up in WWE. Size, look, skill, it's all there for him. Adam Cole vs Bull James (Dempsey) - One of the guys I see all of the time at NXT was wearing his BullFit shirt in front of me. I think he was the only Bull James fan in the place, at least probably leaving. The match wasn't good. Bull messed up a bunch of spots. Cole looked pissed leaving when the match was over too. It ended with Cole cheating and winning, but the audience turned on Bull about halfway through the match. A guy behind me kept screaming "this is why Vince fired you." I felt bad for Bull. I think that was his first singles match in ROH. It wasn't a warm welcome for him. After the match, they did a cool thing with Corino coming out as Mr. Wrestling III and he and Bull both did the Bionic Elbow to BJ Whitmer and Punishment Martinez. Last time I saw Cole live was against Kenny King. So this was vastly different in quality, sadly. War Machine vs Tempura Boyz - The Tempura Boyz are freaking awesome. Seriously. I thought this was going to be a job match, and it largely was, but the offense they got in was great. War Machine won by hitting the classics but I was pleasantly surprised by the match as a whole. Jay Briscoe, Colt Cabana, & Daniels vs Jay Lethal, Alex Shelley, & Silas Young - Main event of the night was off the charts. Lethal is electric to the ROH crowd. He just has crazy it factor in that environment. Tye Dye Guy was in the front row and Lethal did the Mega Powers handshake with him. It was spectacular. Hard hitting match though once it was underway. Lots of ringside play and they hit each other with the steamer garbage cans a few times. I still think Alex Shelley might be one of the most under rated performers of all time. Guy has everything he needs to be a top star anywhere in the world. His selling is over the top but that's about it. Colt Cabana got super kicked up on the stage in one of the best super kicks I've ever seen. Lethal hit Lethal Injection to a massive pop and Silas Young came in to "steal" the win from his own tag partner. It was a weird ending but they were recording for VOD. So there was storytelling going on throughout the night for future matches. Again, amazing show from start to finish. Tons of bang for your buck for $30. I contemplated driving up to Lakeland the next night for their second show but my wife squashed that. I can't wait to see them again over WM33 weekend.

Always enjoy punksnotdead's writeups - sounded like a great show mate! Adam Cole (BAY BAY!) has matured so much, can barely fathom him as the plucky white-meat babyface in CZW, EVOLVE and DGUSA back in the day...every interview I've read or listened to with him cements just how much of a star he is...thanks for sharing bud! Glad to share. Thanks for reading! Cole looked to be in the best shape of his life too. He just slows everything down in the ring. So everything is done with a purpose. He seems to be doing and saying all of the right stuff, and has the presence and confidence of a seasoned veteran even though he's only 27. He's a special talent.
