Wait, so did she stick out her hand after you were finished sliding her the money or during? Because if she had her hand extended after you finished sliding the money for a few seconds and you just stood there standing at her then I could see how she'd be annoyed. But if she didn't give you the chance to pick the money up and put it in her hand then it's her own fault.

Honestly I have never heard of this being out of line or anything and I have been paying for things for a long, loooong time. I would not be offended by that if I was a cashier. I am giving her my hard earned money. The money that I had my balls broken to earn. I'll be damned if I have to have my balls broken to give it to someone. Too bad if she was offended whether I was not being courteous or not. She should have done what everyone else does. Wait until I am not there and can't hear her and then tell everyone how much of a jerk I was by not kissing her ass.

Whether it's rude to set the money on the counter or not, doesn't matter. As an employee, especially as a manager, call a customer ignorant. You may not like something a customer does, one may piss you off, but you have to be professional and keep it in.

Wait why did she say you were ignorant though? Because she expected me to pick the money up off the counter and place it in her hand. Maybe I should bow down to her and kiss her feet, throw her a parade, and beg for her worthiness? We ended up going to a place called "Nifty Fiftys" and sat down, go severed way more food and it cost less even with tip! And I didn't get treated like a piece of crap. yay! I work at Subway and it annoys me when people just throw the money on the counter. Is it really that hard just to hand us the money? It just seems rude to me. Not justifying her response but that's how I feel.

Not justifying her response but that's how I feel. Yeah, my dad works retail and scolded me the first time he saw me pay for something by slamming the money on the counter. He said it was disrespectful in his eyes, and at any rate, it's just easier for the cashier to receive your payment by hand rather than by sliding it off the counter.

To a cashier most of the time there is nothing more rude to them than when a customer puts the money on the counter for them to it pick up. Every morning when I went to wawa I observed the dirty looks people would get when a customer would just put the money on the counter...better yet when the change would bounce and clang around. About .05 seconds after I finished your post..I thought you put the money on the counter..... Social curtisey is handing the cashier your money. FINALLY! This and the last couple of posts. People finally get it. You wouldn't have been happy (nor would any customer) if a cashier placed your change on the counter. It's kind and courteous to hand the money to a cashier, like a normal person. Same way we're trained to hand the change to customers. Very rude to place the money on the counter. Major issue lots of people have. Never have worked retail or with a register and don't understand common courtesy of paying for items (not saying you don't). I've watched guests place the money far from me, I'll just stare at them for fun. They'll then either pick it up and hand it to me, or I'll give in and pick it up. Quite fun when we're just staring at each other. More than half of the time though, I'm too busy to deal with the "customer's" BS. I've also placed their change on the counter. Do unto others, JS. You wouldn't want the change placed on the counter when buying something. That cashier doesn't want the payment placed on the counter either. She wasn't in the right by saying anything while you were still present, but she most likely felt disrespected. There's no reason she should feel disrespected as a person and be made to "deal with it". Same way she shouldn't have disrespected you and your wife. EDIT: Sorry about that small rant. Been working retail since I was done high school (7+ years) and common courtesy from guests is something that really gets to me. Haha

Not sure if its already been said but i work in customer service and it may not be the same situation but i hate it when i have my hand out for money and the customers put it on the counter anyway. Then they are already expecting me to hand them change. Just a little annoying when that happens but im assuming that was the reason for that happening, it however is not very good to actually call your customer ignorant...

maybe she was mad because she thinks she deserves $15 an hour to flip burgeres like the rest of them people who are all sad faced their GED landed them there, or lack of education for that matter. i could never do a fast food job. only if i was trying to move up in management, wouldn't it be worth the hassle. I work customer service at a convenience store full time, and people like you absolutely piss me off to no end. Just who do you think you are that makes you better than anyone who works a minimum wage job? At least people "flipping burgers" have a job and aren't being lousy scabs living off of tax payers money. They're contributing what they can. I'm so sorry you look down at them and their "sad faces". Yeah, I work a bs job, but at least I am working and I do everything at my job to the best of my ability. I'm doing what I have to just to pay my bills while I work toward another goal when I am not on the clock there. For all you know, a lot of people are doing the exact same. Even if they are stuck at a dead end job it is still an honest paying job and they work for their pay. As for the topic at hand, I can't count the number of times I've gotten onto employees at my store for being rude for no reason. If a job pays your bills, keeps a roof over your head, and keeps you fed, you take pride in that job and you handle yourself as professionally as possible. If not, you can get the out and find somewhere else to work, because I sure don't want anyone damaging the reputation of where I work. As far as people thinking an "education" is the big defining difference in not ending up in a crap job... Need I remind you this country is in a recession? Just because you go to school for something does not assure you a "good job" these days. In fact, until you can find a job in the field you studied in, you just might have to work somewhere like McDonald's just to pay off your debts and keep yourself fed.

Having worked as a cashier, not getting handed money was one of my biggest pet peeves.
With that being said, I've never really let it get to me like this lady apparently. It annoyed me but I never even thought about confronting a customer about it.

Anyone who is trying to justify the manager woman getting pissed off because people don't always hand them cash needs to wake up. How much respect does this woman honestly feel she deserves? I worked a register for 2 years and saw this same kinda stuff happen. These girls would go off on customers for not handing them the money. It boggled my mind. Not sure how anyone can see that as disrespectful or ignorant. Any people who do must have some sort of pride complex.

I had a problem several years ago at McDonalds aswell. The manager at the time was rude, and she got extremely rude to my mom and myself as she took our order. Well as it went on, they forgot something from our order, and the manager grabs it and slams it onto the counter and storms off. The box came open, contents went on the counter, we had to wait for ANOTHER sandwich. Well, this was too good for myself and I asked her what her problem was, and she told me "to get the hell out of her store."
Needless to say, when we got home, my father grabbed me and we went back to McDonalds and he told her off in front of the crew and customers(it was dinner rush) for being rude. We found out a week later that she got fired for being nasty to the employees and customers. Then she started working at the local gas station we go to. She didn't last long there either.
Needless to say, I know retail is brutal and stressful, but you have to respect the customer.

Especially the last part. I work at an Olive Garden and we have TONS of people working there, and I know others outside of work as well, that have teaching degrees (there's a major well-known teaching university in my town) and just can't find a job. So they're working wherever they can to make ends meet until they get their big break. I've been working there for 6 years now bussing tables, and it's hard to find anything that pays more than that where I live. Everyone pays like crap because there's an endless influx of college kids that will work for minimum wage from the two universities in town.

I don't think she should have gotten so worked up that she called you ignorant. I don't think you should have gotten so worked up to request a personal call from her demanding an apology. Just my take.
