You knew it was coming, and now what will arguably be the most anticipated rematch in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) history is confirmed.
Newly crowned middleweight champion Chris Weidman will put his belt on the line for the first time against former titleholder Anderson Silva in the main event of UFC 168 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Dec. 28, 2013.
Although there was a four-city sweepstakes to host "Weidman vs. Silva 2," the UFC's home base of "Sin City" won out as company president Dana White announced the rematch to ESPN on Saturday (July 13, 2013).
Weidman (10-0) defeated "The Spider" with a shocking second-round knockout just one week ago at UFC 162. "All American" had the support of his fellow fighters going into the match up, but no one expected him to become the first man to knock Silva out cold in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.
The 28-year-old stated from the moment he signed to face Silva the first time that he would give an immediate rematch to the Brazilian, and he has kept true to that sentiment since the belt was wrapped around his waist.
Silva (33-5) expressed no desire to try and win his belt back from Weidman in the immediate fallout from UFC 162; however, he quickly changed his tune and announced he "badly" wanted a rematch as soon as possible.
After a record 16-fight winning streak inside the Octagon, Silva finally had his one-of-a-kind run halted in dramatic fashion on July 4th weekend. What many considered to be an excessive amount of taunting led a Weidman's shocking knockout finish and for the first time since Jan. 2006, Silva failed to have his hand raised in an MMA fight.
Now it's time to find out he'll rebound.
UFC 168 was originally headlined by a women's bantamweight championship rematch between The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 18 coaches Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate, a fight that will now serve of the co-main event of the evening.
