I couldn't care less about obscure guys that Jakks did. I'm fine with well known Legends and Flashback and the current roster. If Mattel can get the rights to Angle and Hogan I'll be set. Although there's one obscure character I'd love to have in Basic form and that's Vampiro.

Jakks had the wwe liscense for like 15 years, so of course they (as of now) have the better roster. I mean the BCA guys alone had figures that Mattel will never make (headbangers, flash funk, Marc mero, ect). It's not really fair to compare such things right now.....but in 11 years from now, if Mattel is still doing WWE, I think they will have done everybody they could have possibly done & were allowed to do by then. But if you wanna do mattel vs jakks years 1-4 ONLY, then Mattel has done way better than Jakks IMO I myself can not wait until 10 years from now when the Mattel start making flashbacks of Cena, Sheamus, Mysterio, and Orton. I would LOVE debut Flashbacks of Cena & Orton now.

Ask this question after 11 years and we will see who wins.

They were also a newer, unknown toy company w/ less $$$. Its really apples to oranges

in the first 4 years. Jakks had about 93 individual characters put out. Mattel has about 173 in their first 4.
Pretty impressive for Jakks considering they didn't have legends or a womens division back then. And the roster was probably much smaller. And 1996, Jakks first year, They only put out 2 sets.
Jakks also didn't put out many single figures in the early years. They made a ton of 2packs and boxed sets.

Its really apples to oranges While I agree (the first Legends made being the set with Andre and Lou Albano, which came out in '98 or '99, and then nothing until the CS line), apples and oranges are both round fruit that grow on trees with red as a primary color that produce the two most popular juices. Pretty easy to compare in my book.

I'm just not entirely convinced that the better roster is the one with the most figures. Obviously I understand that argument, but to me "better" really should imply the look and design of a figure (in addition to quantity). As Most agree at this point, Mattel figures just look much better. They're a much more fair and accurate representation of the workers... and that's really important to me. Maybe this is repeating the same note too much, but it's a little telling to me when Jakks diehard collectors say they've now replaced most of their lineup with Mattel.
For me, especially now that we've gotten most of who I would want (of course there will always be a few that Jakks did that Mattel wont), I'm picking quality over quantity. Also, not only do I love classic wrestling, but I also watch current WWE, and I look forward to getting new guys.

Jakks made every "current" WWF/WWE wrestler and diva from 1996 - 2009, plus over 100+ specific older wrestlers and managers in the CS line, not including the variations of many of them.
I love Mattel, but this question isn't even close yet.

I used to collect a lot of the Jakks figures and just recently got into the Mattel ones (only elites). While Jakks may have produced more figures since they had the license for so long in comparison, the Mattel figures blow them away. The quality and amount of detail, not to mention actually having Rey Mysterio and Undertaker not being the same size/height, is what seals it for me. Besides there were quite a few characters I didn't buy during the Jakks days since I had no interest in them.
Given time, the Mattel line will easily surpass Jakks in term of quality and quantity and thus have the better roster.

Its better roster, not better figures. Really the only things i look at are roster size (how many unique characters they released) and maybe quality of roster. Jakks had to deal with weaker WWE rosters, with ppl like Heidenreich, La Resistance, Gymini, Truth Commission etc... Jakks made as many current wrestlers as they could. Back in the day WWF had wrestlers that weren't really on the main roster. They would bring in indy guys from Japan, Mexico, Smoky Mountain, USWA, NWA, AAA etc. WWE doesn't do that now. The last time you saw indy jobbers was during Rybacks debut. So Jakks likely didn't have rights to guys like Aguila, Great Sasuske, Mil Mascaras, Rock n Roll Express etc.. When Jakks started making WWF figures in 96.....the Womens division and Legends contracts didn't exist yet. Cloth accessories and articulation beyond the 5pts of POA...weren't around. Not in that scale There was no facial scan technology in the WWE line till TTL Real Scan came out. Now head scans and 16+ Points of Articulation are standard.

When I hear/read "better roster" I feel like the quality of the product should be taken into account, not just size. You made other good points which I over-deleted, sorry.

Just an opinion, but East Coast pretty much nailed it. Mattel took the helm with a much bigger budget and many other action figure brands successfully under their belts. By that logic, they could have a dozen more unique molds for torsos, arms, leg shapes, etc. But we're voting on better roster. Go ahead and ask the question a dozen years from now. The only difference I bet we'll see is a few more stars from the 80's in Flashbacks and whoever gets called up to the main roster. That is to say if Mattel still has the license. While that number of unique talent could be large, you will still never see half of Jakks Classic Superstars made into Mattel Legends. Ever.

Put any 4 years of Jakks RA against the last 4 years of Mattel, and Jakks would still have a deeper roster.
There is no doubt that Jakks would have made: -Husky Harris -Serena -SES Joey Mercury -Caylen Croft -Tiffany -Aksana -Lance Archer -Kaval -Kharma -Tyler Reks

Jakks MAY have gotten the license in 1995 but the first figures did NOT appear until 1996. Being the old fart around here that was around when LJN had the license I know what I am talking about.

I get where you're coming from, but it was stated as figure roster, not figure lines. Bigger doesn't neccisarily mean better, quality still counts. Many (especially Dean F'n Ambrose) will probably think the Mattel roster is still better because of the wrestling ability of guys that Jakks never got to make. There aren't many people who'd argue Jakks quality is better, though.
