Hey guys, I'm growing increasingly concerned over Mattel's poor paint jobs of late. Due to work, time and availability I have to order a lot of my figures online here in the UK and I'm receiving some really shoddy applications. I don't remember Mattel always being this bad, in fact the only really bad figure I got from my first couple of years of collecting was the design on the tights of the first basic Yoshi Tatsu. Now almost every set I order has flaws on at least one if not two of the figures. Really annoying things like unpainted sections, sloppy designs, paint globs on head and even blotches on the figures face or mispainted eyes. Has anyone else noticed a sharp decline in Mattel's quality or am I just being really unlucky? I do see a lot of bad ones in store but at least I can avoid buying a terrible one if I'm picking it myself. I realise mistakes are always going to happen but I feel when prices are going up we should be entitled to a better product. This is no reflection on the actual designs or sculpts of the figures, which I think are great. I'd be interested to hear peoples thoughts on this. Thanks for reading

It's been this way from the start with the bad quality control. Stuck/loose joints, paint errors, the occasional two left legs or arms, packaging poses warping limbs etc.
The only thing that I think has gotten worse is the stiff shoulder joints. Seems like about 80% of elites I open have that "this arm's gonna snap off if I force it" factor.

My E23 Cesaro has paint splatter all over the front of his trunks, There's a joke here somewhere but I'm to pissed at Mattel quality control to crack it! -.-

I used to be pretty picky about paintjobs, but I find that I'm now just looking for ones that don't have big splatters on them.

I've noticed it more lately myself. My Dean and WM30 HBK figure both had hair paint going down their forehead that I had to sand off. I ended up buying them that way since the other Dean's and HBK's I saw had other paint errors that were worse in my opinion. Dean's hair not fully painted in, bad eye paint, HBK's wristbands smudged down the arm, HBK's hair not painted in all the way, etc . . . I even got a Rollins where the hair wasn't all painted in.
But, as we all know, when you've been hunting for a figure you want and you finally find it, you're hard pressed to make a decision to pass on it for paint issues (and risk not finding it again), or buy it and see if you can make it better, or just live with it. I can imagine how ticked you'd be if your only real option is to order online and not know if you'll get a decent paint job.
Thankfully, I only display my figures (not MOC) so if I can fix it or improve it, I do my best and move on.
Overall though, I'd still much rather deal with SOME of these issues as long as Mattel continues to make some of the best figures we've ever had.

I agree. I've dealt with extremely loose ankles, tight or broken hips, and plain bad paint jobs. Even worse part about it is you're basically stuck with it unless you bought it in stores..in which case you would probably pick a good one anyways.

Either I'm lucky or blind, because I've only had a couple with paint problems. I have had a few joints snap for pretty much no reason, though.

I was never one to notice the bad paint apps and never had appendages barely hanging on fresh out of package until fall of last year. Since then, I have been subjected to sub par quality control on most everything I've found. I was hoping the bad qc could have been attributed to ramped up orders for holiday distribution during the 4th quarter. But I haven't seen any improvements yet. I wanted E26 Warrior very badly, but had to pass 3 times because he had black sharpie like blotches all over his face and arms EVERY time I found him. Finally last week I found a blotch free one to purchase. The dangling limbs of recent pickups like b36 Swagger,BO 2014 Kaitlyn, and Signature Series Punk have caused me to relegate them to the safer (ie back) part of my displays. For fear that should they fall or be fallen into ,they will become handless. Its ridiculous to pay these prices for sub par quality. I've bought jakks TNA figures recently with better paint apps no limb problems........I'm not saying they're better than mattel in general, but I don't think mattel is any significant amount better than them anymore.

Out of all my figs Cesaro has been the only one with any real quality issue. I live in Louisiana where it's ridiculously hot and humid, so I kind of assumed most of the issues with the ones I've had were due to the temperature during transit. It seems like it's wider spread than that. Still, that only accounts for maybe 2% of what I've owned, so it's not too terrible.

I live in Northern Ireland so unfortunately for Mattel the overheating of figs causing the paint to run excuse just isn't gonna fly over here! Its colder than a witches nipple!

It's a damn shame. I like them but they're getting sloppy and we can't keep giving $ for a sloppy job

A whole strap on my Nikki Bella's outfit is missing. Annoying.

How are the figures painted anyway? Is it by hand or do they have machines?

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess unfortunately it is quite a widespread problem and I hope there's a way Mattel can knuckle down on this and tighten the quality procedures. Does anyone gave any idea if there's a way to remove these horrible black splodges on the flesh? Kaitlyn and Seth Rollins figures I ordered online both have them. For missing hair, facial hair etc I usually use a sharpie and that helps a bit.
