I'll start off with the Battle Bowl match from WCW:
To gain entry into the match, there was a "Lethal Lottery" in which random wrestlers would be put together as tag teams. They would then face off in a series of tedious matches, with the winning team gaining a spot in the Battle Bowl match later on in the night. Once the match's participants were finalised, the match would take place in two rings side by side. Wrestlers needed to be eliminated TWICE from this match.
The first elimination would occur by throwing an opponent over the top rope into the second ring. Over time, there would be two simultaneous battle royals going on. The second elimination would occur in the traditional way from the second ring to the floor. There would then be one survivor from each ring, who would then battle it out until the final elimination occurred.
A VERY confusing concept, but also a unique one.
So my question to you all is this, what match concepts can you think of that didn't quite make sense?

Brisco vs Patterson evening gown hardcore championship match. It made no sense to me then and left me scarred for life.
But seriously...there were a bunch of WCW cage concept matches in the 90s that sounded good but didn't work out that way. Ever see the electric chair cage match that included Cactus Jack and Abdullah? Or the cluster*ck that was a multi-level cage match where Hulk Hogan had to make his way from the top down to the floor and then to the ring while batting all the anti-Hulkamaniacs? I'm sure if I did a little research I could remember some other pretty bad ideas WCW came up with.
BTW - I believe "lights out" match refers to an "unsanctioned" match that takes place after the regular card is done, hence after the lights go out. It was an old school name for what we now call a street fight or no DQ match. They were used as the blow off match to a big feud.

Bill Watts originally did it in the Mid-South region I wanna say, because he would have it that the entire show would take place, and you have your main event which is probably the World Title match. Then after that, the lights would go off and come back on, and the non-sanctioned match would take place. They did this so they could use the excuse if anything happened, it wouldn't be held on the companies shoulders. Kayfabe speaking of course. Best example of this type of match is at Halloween Havoc 92. Ron Simmons vs. Barbarian for the WCW Title was the main event, it happened, then after that the Coal Minors Glove match between Sting and Jake Roberts took place. For it was 'not a part' of the show, even though it was. But it's perceived to not be cause of the 'lights out' factor. |

Interestingly, the article I located that info in also mentioned what may be the worst "match" idea ever: the monster truck sumo match on the arena rooftop at Halloween Havoc '95. |

Interestingly, the article I located that info in also mentioned what may be the worst "match" idea ever: the monster truck sumo match on the arena rooftop at Halloween Havoc '95. Monster Truck Sumo match? I can only wonder what the WCW booking team were thinking there. |

great wrestlecrap article on it. i dont remember much about the match itself, but one [somewhat transcribed] line that stuck with me from the article... "with all the crap involved in that match, it was still ric flair who took the losing fall". ill try to find the article in a little bit.

A few come to mind immediately. As mentioned before the last rites match TNA had was hilariously bad.
I found this one on wikipedia but I could not find a video, maybe someone could elaborate on who's promotion this was.
"Thunderbowl - This match was similar to Battlebowl. Up to 100 wrestlers can compete in the match. It is split into two rings with 50 wrestlers in each. The only way to be eliminated is to be thrown over the ropes. No matter where you hit, whether its apron, floor or barricade you are eliminated. When 25 wrestlers are left in each ring stage 2 begins. This stage is when all 25 wrestlers get into one ring and there is no elimination. After a 5 minute period, the match turns into a battle royal where elimination is gained by throwing your opponent over the ropes and to the floor. When 5 wrestlers remain stage 3 begins. This then turns into a 5-Way match where pinfall eliminates an opponent. When 2 wrestlers are left, the match turns into a last man standing where KO is legal. The final wrestler left wins."
That sounds like a cluster**** if I ever heard of one.

And perhaps my favorite randomf**k match of all time has to be.....
TNA Impact 11/2/06 Rhino vs Christian Cage
The match didn't even have a winner, it was a four pole corner match where there were weapons/items in each corner that can be used in their barbed wire cage match when Spike debuted on primetime in 2006. Most pointless match ever, and the fact it was the main event was silly. I wish I could find a video of this, but google the results....it happened.

I can not believe no one's mentioned the Kennel From Hell match.
I never liked the King Of The Mountain match either. The fact that the Championship is sort of tossed around during the match ruins it for me. I kind of like the "penalty box" idea of it, but absolutely hate the whole "hang the belt up" thing. Unlike a ladder match, where the object is to scale the ladder and obtain the prize, in King Of The Mountain, you have to scale the ladder with the prize, then almost surrender it in a sense.
