I go in cycles with Cena. Sometimes he just really pisses me off with his "suddenly I'm fine again" style of selling and I'm not a fan of his promos at all generally speaking. But I also find in the big matches he excels. Not in the traditional way where people say he hits a new gear or some crap, but simply because I think he's bizarrely one of the most effective heels of all time. When I think back, there are few characters in wrestling that I want to lose more in big match situations than Cena. Intentional or not (and I would love to find out that it's been intentional all along) the dude's basically the Antichrist for my demographic or whatever you want to call it. He's corny as hell, massively kid fan oriented, comes across really ingenuine most of the time to me (although I don't doubt that he's a cool guy) and he wins all the damn time against guys that I perceive to be flat out better than him. So when he goes up against Edge or Shawn Michaels or Bryan or Punk, I get behind my guy that much more because he's up against THE MAN WHO RUNS THE PLACE~ and it makes the moment that much sweeter, the atmosphere that much more electric when they get the win. Isn't creating moments like that really what wrestling's about? A win vs Cena is the ultimate underdog victory whether that's what the WWE are trying to put across or not. He's the machine, and he fits the role perfectly. This. The other thing that bugs the crap outta me is that he barely takes any of his opponents seriously. I mean look at Bray Wyatt from earlier this year; he's cracking jokes and stuff. Exactly. I like Cena but laughing at Bray Wyatt is just flat out stupid. John has got to start taking people more seriously or at least not laughing at all his opponents.

I think the only person that he's taken relatively serious is Lesnar and that was a few weeks after he got his ass whooped at SummerSlam. I think it was the week before Night of Champions with the brawl they had and Lesnar was busted open.

In early 2005, I was against both Cena and Batista being pushed to the main event. I knew those decisions were going to lead WWE down the path of irrelevance. I had no idea of the degree that WWE would stick with these two guys despite the public disinterest.

When he started wearing those fruity shirts, when he started wearing the Orange one I was pretty much sick of the character. His character needs to evolve.

I'll be impressed when Cena impresses me.
Until then, I'm not impressed.

I knew early on he was a horrible wrestler (and TBH I don't feel like that has changed... almost everyone on the roster could have good matches with the likes of Punk and Daniel Bryan) but he didn't start grating on me as a character/promo man until like 2005.
I basically started actively hating the character once he got drafted to RAW.

Cena doesn't do anything great.
His ring work is good, at times. I don't think it's ever great. The little that he does is good...passable. Not great.
His promos are ok (when he's serious). Otherwise, they are absolute sh*t when he laughs and smiles and cracks jokes. They're not great either way though.
Nothing about him is great.

Survivor Series 2005, Angle deserved to be the WWE Champion.

Noticed he couldn't wrestle well: Pretty much his second match after debuting. Noticed he was cheesy: As soon as he started doing the lame white rapper gimmick, especially after it became a babyface lame white rapper gimmick. Grew out of blind Cena hatred and realised that "5 MOVES OF DOOM OMG SUPERMAN" comebacks are what every top babyface does: 2007 when he had great matches with opponents as diverse as Umaga, Khali and Lashley. Preach. Let's GO CeNAAA! WE KNOW YOU'RE DOING YOUR BEST! Let's go CeNAAAA! WE KNOW YOU'VE EARNED YOUR SPOT! Let's GO CeNAAA! We really don't need a heel turn! Let's GO CeNA! But some greater variance in your moveset & match psychology would be greatly appreciated! Let's GO CeNA!!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Cena's in ring stuff isn't really what annoys me about him(aside from the devaluing of finishers) its his attitude towards his opponents that cracks me up. Its extremely damaging to his feuds and to the other wrestler involved.
I got tired of Cena in 2006.....I thought the fans were WAY too hard on him @ WM22 though. Still do.

Ive never really disliked Cena, I've disliked the way he was booked sometimes. But I really saw a difference before Survivor Series, I mean his team were getting beat down on a weekly basis, and where was Cena? I found it genuinely funny that the heels were all helping eachother out and when team cena is getting laid out where's the captain? going down with his proverbial ship? nope he's back stage granting wishes or some crap, c'mon John you're a wrestler not a ing genie. What makes it worse is how fine his team was with that, yeah thats fine I'll take a beat down off these 8 guys John you stay back stage. no point in the both of us getting the hell kicked out of us now is there.... I wouldn't have been surprised to see a Cena heel turn at survivor series, just the way he was booked leading into SS....

I first hated Cena when he came out and said "...RUTHLESS AGRESSSION!" at Kurt Angle. That was his debut right? So pretty much was hating him before hating him was the trend.
Oh, and I didn't like his non-speaking cameo in Ready 2 Rumble. He looked like a tool.

Otherwise, they are absolute sh*t when he laughs and smiles and cracks jokes. They're not great either way though. Nothing about him is great. This "it's cool to hate Cena" thing hasn't been relevant since 2006-2007. That time passed. Now people are just genuinely annoyed with him. He's slid into X-pac heat territory for me, or at least he does at times. "It's cool to hate CM Punk," or even AJ, seems like more of a thing now than hating Cena. It's like Bizaro internet smarks. Ryback and Cena love and Punk and Bryan hate. It's pathetic either way because you're ultimately pandering to a guy to get a reaction out of an opposite fanbase. Cena isn't a bad worker imo. He's not a great worker, as he doesn't make other talent better in the ring, but he can have good or even great matches with guys who are great. On the microphone though, I get so frustrated with him. He has these flashes of brilliance, like he's taking out his frustrations with the audience on his opponent, and then he can't help but it up by "being himself" and laughing like an idiot or telling a terrible joke. John Cena is an idea. He's not even a real guy. He's this idea that WWE has about what "the guy" should be and look like, how he should act and talk, and it honestly changes from week-to-week, with the wind. John Cena plays to that mold and does all he can to be that guy but he's never been the most talented guy at any one thing, sans maybe work ethic, and likely politicking on some level too. He's super easy to hate if you're over the age of 12 imo. People can see that he's not authentic imo and that's why older fans don't like him. Plus, he has been doing the same things for so long that it's only natural for the fans to want to see something else. We're incredibly fickle, about everything. We want to see a guy rise to the top, win it all, and then 3 months later a new guy to do it. So seeing Cena in that spot for a decade has been insanity for so many of us imo.

My biggest gripe is 'John Cena the night after a PPV'.
It's almost ALWAYS a promo where he basically blows the other guy, and laughs and jokes about the match from the night before.
It negates any seriousness his feuds are supposed to have, or any edge his character could have over his opponent. Congratulations are one thing, but his are pretty much always over the top and come off as patronizing.
WITHOUT FAIL, the first 10-20 minutes of a Raw after a PPV involve John Cena in SOME WAY talking about his match from the night before, saying "_____ was the better man last night. Joke, wisecrack, kiddy joke, city name drop, angry line, catchprhase." .... and on to the next one.

I've said this before: After year of watching Hogan kicking out of every finisher, not selling any finisher, and then winning matches with five moves. I don't bat an eye at Cena. He's not nearly as bad as people make him out to be.
