Are any of you close to someone who'd be offended personally by this term? Did you ever think that there is a history of people commonly dehumanized because of names like this? For centuries- races, genders, sexual preferences are all trashed because of their just being them. I mean, most of you are really missing the point.
It's not about banning. It's not about being 'sawft'. It's about having sensitivity to other human beings. Choosing your own words carefully, because you actually care to consider that you're saying something that continues to belittle an entire subsect of the world.
I mean, throughout Disney films, literature and other forms of media-- what's the easiest way to distinguish someone as 'evil' or 'other'? Give them a visual impediment. Hook for a hand. Hunchback. Limp. Eyepatch. Laugh at their lisp. Their stutter. The way their face is shaped.
If you wanna continue to appropriate this behavior, it's your own agenda. All this entire thread was about was to get people to look within, be more contemplative and try to be selective in why they say what they say.

No offence, but you're being kind of ridiculous. The Hunchback Of Notre Dame wasn't an evil character, and he wasn't even created by Disney, and Captain Hook was a pirate.

This thread has more drama than a full season of Total Divas. It's about to get real up in here!

I could have sworn the word was censored, at least many years ago. I made a post about Kid Kash yelling at me and calling me a "chubby little intellectually- disabled person" and the word "intellectually- disabled person" was censored. Maybe I'm mistaken, it was a long time ago.
Anyways, I agree though, it should be considered a slur, though I'm not sure if censoring it will work because of other, non-slur uses (few though they may be)

Yeah, and HBoND is the prototypical misfit story. I mean, maybe Disney wasn't the best reference-- but if you read the actual Grimm's fairy tales, every 'evil character', witch or badguy is disfigured, blind people are mocked, all evil people have a handicap. Like, the real ones, not the commodified ones. I'm cool with anyone thinking I'm being overly sensitive. I'd rather be aware than oblivious.

Look, no matter where you go you're gonna have racists, biggots, homophobes, ect... and of course they're gonna say offensive things, but you know what? There's not a damn thing you can do about it. Offensive or not, every human being has a right to freedom of speech whether you like what is said or not. You can't, nor have the right to, control what other people say. Being easily offended by these words is what gives them power. So your best bet is to toughen up, stop being overly sensitive and ignore them because you CANNOT control what people say.

if i tell my friend he's being intellectually- disabled when he's doing something...it is NOT offensive. if i yell at a person with down syndrome that they are intellectually- disabled...it IS offensive.
and the same goes for any other kinds of "offensive" words
listen to ANY hip hop song of the last 10 years. you'll find "the N word" if not 10 times at least once or twice. no one really cares. white guy uses it in anger towards a black guy? offensive.
Pretty crystal clear.
instead of people constantly soap boxing on what's offensive and what isn't, maybe they should take a class on CONTEXT

No, its stupid to ban a word. You've done a good job in explaining to people that it can be offensive, its their choice if they want to offend people and face repercussions. Thats the only way to do things in a less fascist way than what you're asking for.

People just make up their own ideas and run with them, though. I'm glad it raised discussion, started a dialogue and got some people to consider not using it as a choice. That's all I really wanted.

We should be allowed to say what we want. When people use terms like this, most of the time they don't mean it. And those who do mean it deserve the punishment. The only way it's ever going to be stopped used as a slur is if we teach the next generation that it's wrong. But even then it's going to take a long time.
Oh and using "daily lexicon" in your opening post isn't going to help. To me if came off like your looking down on the rest of the board. I apologise if it was the only word that came to mind. But it did irk me a bit.

The title of this thread, more than anything, I think, is misleading people. My intentions were to just raise the issue and get people to question their use of it.

Sorry for bringing it up. Yeah, the way I look at it being a gradual thing, is in terms of race. My parents might say something vaguely racist and I'd pick them up on it. Then when I'm older my children should know it's something that is unacceptable. Of course, the problem being, not everyone is like this. I have friends who think it's fine, so they will continue to pass down the feeling that it's okay to say stuff like that. So it takes time, a long time. But as long as more people become aware it is the wrong thing to say it's fine. I would never say these words in real life but on a message board, it's easier to get carried away. Like I said, most of the time they don't mean it (on message boards, that is), it's those who do mean it that should be punished.

I don't think anyone should be punished, this is not rubbing anyone's nose in it. The fact is most people wouldn't even think twice about it being insensitive. And just because the intention isn't to offend doesn't mean it won't. I'm not calling them a bad person, I used to use all types of screwed up words when I was younger, and I have tons of my own faults and bad habits. I understand the counter argument, but I still won't go back on the fact I know it's insulting to a large group of people. No matter what, even if I'm painted to look like an over-sensitive whiner, I will stand by the idea. This battle isn't mine directly, but I've adopted it. I agree in freedom of speech. I think we shouldn't censor anything. I do think we should be more deliberate and think before we speak, however. These words we say hold meaning and when strung together in just the wrong way, can destroy people's confidence, self image and will to live. Least we can do is begin to give a damn.

Some of you need to realize that saying "It happens all the time, oh well" is the very reason that the problem still exists in the first place.

And even if it is, people will never stop using it completely. You will never live in a world where people don't use the word. Much like we will never live in a world where crime is eliminated. People will always be people. It's a bad comparison because I don't think saying words is a crime, but you know...

Don't get me wrong, I don't get bothered by words and such. But when acknowledged as a problem such as in this thread, that mindset is a poor excuse.

Interesting thread. Does the phrase "Look at that foam face!" offend anyone? I know of a famous TV star/podcaster who made the point that the word "intellectually- disabled person" is just that; a word. It's the merit behind it's usage that is offensive right? So if the merit behind the phrase "foam face" in fact means "one who is delayed or held back in terms of progress, development, or accomplishment" to only a few people, should the term be deemed offensive for everyone? Personally, I agree with the sentiment that using terms that are considered offensive to certain people is in bad taste. But I also realize that certain words and phrases mean different things to different people. The Future , pray tell, what do you call something that you deem to be lacking in quality or or sophomoric in taste? Do you call it stupid? Dimwitted? Sub par? To a lot of people the word "intellectually- disabled person" means the same thing. Which then furthers the question, "Is ignorance a crime?". If you chastise someone for their ignorance, is that not the same as chastising a mentally challenged person for things that they themselves are ignorant of? Is a mentally challenged person going around calling everyone they see the N-word because they heard it in a song or movie the same thing as someone ignorant to the audacity of the word "intellectually- disabled person" using it to describe something they deem to be sub par? I have 1 close family member and 1 extended family member who's mentally challenged. One of my best friend's brother is mentally challenged. I don't take personal offense to people using said word as a put down or a stand in for "lame" or "stupid" or "sub par" because I'm smart enough to know that people mean different things when using that word... If someone watches an episode of "Beavis and Butt-Head" and says, "This is intellectually- disabled." I find no offense in that. If I'm out in public with my cousin and someone points to my cousin laughing, saying, "Look at that intellectually- disabled person uh huh huh huh huh!" I do find offense to it, because I know the merit of the comment is derogatory on purpose, as opposed to the former phrase, where the person's merit is to infer that Beavis and Butt-Head's antics are sophomoric. The Future, I agree with you 100% that it's a shame we don't live in a world where people are more sensitive to other's feelings. However in the first paragraph of your original post you say " people consistently misuse and over-indulge in malicious phrases, especially when explaining something they disdain." which in turn means that the merit behind them using the word is to show disdain. Just because we're close to mentally challenged people does not give us the right to be offended for them. In that context, I do believe that homophobic and ethnic slurs should be banned here because there are members of this board who directly are offended by those types of words. So I guess what I'm saying is that yeah, sure I wish people wouldn't go around using that term for things they disdain. I think it's horrible. But unless someone says "Hitman Bono's cousin a a stewpid reard!" Then I fail to see how someone's ignorance should offend me. But uh... c'mon people, saying things like "Roman winning the Rumble is r-tarded." shows that the only thing "mentally challenged" is your own ability to understand proper lexicon and do have empathy for other people's feelings. However, if you honestly believe the having Reigns win the Rumble was the right call, or is what was "best for business" then you my fellow board member are what I like to call a foam face.
