this was something I've been thinking about doing for awhile ... we all have our lists and thought on who the BEST WWF/WWE Champions are...but who would you consider the WORST?! this was a very subjective poll, and I tried to create some type of criteria for the list I created. this is what I came up with:
- a Champion who's reign was short, and really had no significant impact or meaning.basically in the time they had it, they didn't add any prestige to the title, nor did they do anything of worth with it.
- generally a Champion with one reign only,as champions with multiple reigns seem to make at least one of them worthwhile.
- I disqualified guys who had multiple reigns, but had one or more useless reigns in there. for instance, the Undertaker's first reign was pretty insignificant, but he subsuquently had more meaningful reigns later on.Hogan's 4th reign was completely useless and lasted like 2 days, but he obviously had better reigns, making him not one of the "worst". Yokozuna had a useless first reign, but dominant second reign, therefore excluding him from being one of the "worst". I'm basically counting "worst" over a whole career and what they did with the Championship all the times they had it.
- only counting the WWF/WWE Championship. not the WWF version of the WCW Championship nor the World Heavyweight Championship .
so...in going through the history of the WWE, I came up with this list. some will agree, some will think I'm nuts, but these were the guys I felt met the above criteria. and here's my reasons for picking them:
Ivan Koloff - basically only given the Belt so they could transition it to the very popular Pedro Morales, after Bruno was contemplating retirememnt. and face vs face matches still weren't allowed.
Stan "The Man" Stasiak - another transitional Champion, once Bruno decided to coem back, and they had to take it off Morales. did nothing with the Belt.
The Iron Sheik - a controversial choice, but he meets my criteria. only given the title to drop it to Hogan, and didn't elevate or do anything of note in the month he had it.
Andre the Giant - held it for like a minute, did absolutely nothing with it, and immediately surrendered it.
Kane - won it basically only to spike ratings for Raw the next night, and dropped it in his first defense one day later.
Rey Mysterio - won it to only drop it to Cena like an hour later. one of the worst "reigns" ever
Daniel Bryan - THIS is going to be controversial, but he won it, barely defended it, had one lackluster PPV match against Kane, then never defended it again til he was stripped of it. yeah, I know what the circumstances were, but the facts still speak for themselves.
guys who were considered, but while having one or more terrible reigns, had one of more significant reigns that took them out of being one of the worst ever:
Bob Backlund - 2nd reign was only to drop it to Diesel, but his 1st reign lasted 5 years.
Hulk Hogan - 4th and 5th reigns were useless ( even the 6th to a point), but he had those earlier reigns that made him The Man
Sgt. Slaughter - came REAL close to getting on, but he did defend it a lot in the 3 months he had it, and he was asignificant player as WWF Champion
Undertaker - 1st and to a degree 3rd reigns were crap, but 2nd and 4th were great.
Ric Flair - his 2nd reign was only as a transitional Champ, but his first reign was somewhat good.
Yokozuna - 1st reign lasted under 3 minutes, but had a dominant 2nd reign
Bret Hart - 4th reign was under a day, but he more significant other reigns
Mankind - 3rd reign was only a day, but first 2 helped elevate the Rock
Triple H - first reign did nothing for him, but subsuquent reigns helped make him The Man
Edge - first reign was super-hot,but over super-quick. subsuquent reigns would give him more to chew on.
