What a mess of emotions that day was. One of the my favorites. I was there, in person for the two biggest moments in his career (Rumble '03, Mania XX), and both were among my fondest moments as a wrestling fan. His death, and the subsequent revelations about it, are one of those watershed moments where I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing.

I get a little uncomfortable watching Benoit matches sometimes. I certainly don't go out of my way to watch them anymore.
I view things a little differently than most. To me, what happens outside of the ring is much more important than what goes on inside. The fact Benoit killed his family automatically overshadows anything else he did in his life...especially wrestling which is ultimately meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

Awful tragedy it really was. Man I just couldn't believe it....Benoit was one of my favourites and holy sh*t I was stuck to the floor when I heard this.
Also count me amongst the crew who has no problem enjoying and watching his matches. RR03 especially.

Royal Rumble '03 vs. Angle is a classic but it's a damn shame he did what he did and now it's hard to enjoy that, and the rest of his great matches.

Man, 8 years? I remember seeing it on Sky Sports News (internet was playing up so I had no idea he was dead, let alone killed his wife & kid). One of the blackest days wrestling's history.

I just like looking back at that thread to see me saying that it was a work because it was only being reported on wwe.com and nowhere else. Living in Atlanta, it seemed crazy that none of the local news outlets or CNN were reporting it at all. Honestly, I still don't blame myself for thinking that initially, it was just to surreal to belive, as evidenced by others who still don't believe it.
I can watch Benoit matches, but it's hard to enjoy them. He was my favorite wrestler for a decade, and I still feel let down and betrayed by him becoming a monster.

I don't care what anyone says. One of the absolute best to ever lace up a pair of boots.

Does anyone have a link to the thread when the news hit?
I remember it like it was yesterday.
I thought it was 22nd June though... meh.

Years of steroid abuse and blows the head. At the time I thought he did it because he was stuck on ecw. That wasn't his reason for doing it, but several people mentioned that Benoit was unhappy on ECW, feeling it was a demotion and that he would soon be fired.

I was re-watching ECW ONS last week and completely forgot he was on it.
When his music hit I started squirming and couldn't settle during his match. Then later on when Austin gets him to headbutt Bischoff, at the mention of his name my stomach dropped.
I loved him.
He was 100% responsible for me watching wrestling for the first time. He was a heel at the time but I couldn't get over how good he was and didn't understand why people were booing him. For me now, to be so uncomfortable when one of his matches comes on, is so sad.
Why Chris? Why?!

Im in a minority but I forgive him. When you snap, you never know quite what you're capable off. Could I kill someone in my current state of mind, no. In a different state of mind...I dont know. We've all had bloody thoughts, pushed so far who knows what we would do.

Benoit is absolutely one of my favorite wrestlers of all time. The match in 2003 at the Rumble with Kurt Angle, and the best of 7 with Booker T in WCW and in 2005 are some of my fondest wrestling memories.

The fact that in court people who killed with a mental-disorder are often proven not guilty, yet this guy, who killed with a mental disorder, and it's proven, will always be known as a 'murderer' One of my all time favorites, possibly my favorite legend of all time. You don't see many people that good in the ring, R.I.P He's known as a murderer because he murdered two people. Nice one! anyway, there was a guy on the news recently that beheaded a 70 year old man because he had gotten schizophrenia, he wasn't sent to jail but was sent to a mental home idefinetly, it showed clips of his girlfriend saying how nice he was before this. This is very similair to Benoits case of how every has said how nice he was before the mental disorder kicked in and led him to do whatever. But why is this guy getting sympathy on the news, but Benoit, I've seen people call him a 'horrible' person for what he did not in his usual day to day mind. Why? I don't know, maybe to do with the fact the proof of his mental disorder only came in later so the mass public thought he did it for no reason. People calling a horrible person for this are..well, stupid. It basically wasn't even him who did it, his body..but not his mind. And that's what makes a person.

It was a strange time for sure. I remember watching the tribute and for some reason it never occurred to me that could have been a double-murder suicide. When I found that out the next day, I couldn't believe it, truly a tragedy.
Since then I've never had issues watching any Benoit matches, but can't remember the last time I did.

I remember he no showed a PPV and I was so young I just thought "WTF?! What is he doing?! He could be champion!!". Then after hearing about the wikipedia page and whatever else it just shocked me beyond belief. I really do not think there is any justification for such a horrendous action. It's horrible to think about. The texts still send chills down my spine.
RIP Nancy and Daniel.

I am just repeating what others have said. But I remember ordering the 2004 Royal Rumble. When he won I was so happy. I bought the action figure and other merchandise. Bought his Hard Knocks DVD and made sure I ordered WM 20.
Since, I haven't been able to go back and see him win that title. It just doesn't feel right.

I was never a fan so I guess it was easier to push him away and never watch his stuff again.

I think he was terrible on the mic (most would agree), and his character was always himself (which was not interesting). He was just a guy who took wrestling too seriously. Physical self-abuse, steroids, all of it. When a guy like Hogan, who used little effort and was not an athlete, is the biggest name of all time, you know something's wrong. Benoit looked at pro wrestling, an entertainment spectacle, as a legitimate, intense sport. After a thousand years he was able to make a "decent" gimmick out of it (though not really, in my opinion), but come on. I like the Internet darlings, and the foreign/indy guys, but the ones who can do something on the mic are generally the best. Punk, Steen, even Bryan, they've all done well on national American TV. I like the "offbeat" or foreign stuff, the Kawada/Misawa matches in Japan, the five star Meltzer stuff, it's all great...but it doesn't all translate to being right for American TV. Out of the aforementioned, I believe Punk, Steen, and Bryan do, but much of it doesn't. Benoit, to me, did not. I don't know how the ratings were when he held the strap in 2004, but he was too textbook, not electric, not revolutionary. To be big in North America as an Internet darling, foreigner, etc., you have to have character. His was just that of a nutcase, which was just an extension of his own personality (taking pro wrestling too seriously). He got a WCW Title win in 2000 and then stood tall at WMXX, but his reign sucked and I was never a huge fan. He just a weird guy, and a weird character (and not in the good way).
I think I liked him best in 2000 feuding with The Rock with Shane McMahon as his manager.
