My parents were very open minded when I was a kid and they encouraged me to read comic books because I WAS READING. By the time I got to high school, I was still reading comics but also had moved on to Heinlein, Asimov, Herbert, and plenty of other sci fi greats (as well as the more main stream and often trash like King, Straub, Clancy, and any Star Trek or Star Wars novels I could get my hands on). I probably wouldn't enjoy reading as much as I do if not for all those X-Men, Spider-man, and Fantastic Four comics I read first.

I don't read very often, but I listen to a lot of music so most of my inspiration comes from the more lyrical bands I listen to.

Well, hopefully I've written off Makoto in a serviceable way for the time being. I may never get back to writing him but I figured I'd leave the door open for that possibility. For now though I will be focusing on Warren Goodwin, who should be fun to write.

FACK The Great Gatsby! That might easily be my least favorite book of all time, right up at the top of the list with The Perks of Being a Wallflower. "Because I know there are people who say all these things don’t happen. And there are people who forget what it’s like to be sixteen when they turn seventeen. I know these will all be stories some day, and our pictures will become old photographs. We all become somebody’s mom or dad. But right now, these moments are not stories. This is happening. I am here, and I am looking at her. And she is so beautiful. I can see it. This one moment when you know you’re not a sad story. You are alive. And you stand up and see the lights on the buildings and everything that makes you wonder. And you’re listening to that song, and that drive with the people who you love most in this world. And in this moment, I swear, we are infinite." Wallflower is a favorite. Part of it is because it accurately depicts Pittsburgh's scenery well, and I'm a sucker for those kinds of books. Wallflower is f*cking abysmal. What a god damn chore it was to read.

You know what book i hated? Moby Dick I HATED it It reads a lot better if you skip the 1/3rd of it that is technical descriptions of 19th century whaling procedures. I love Melville but he described the breaking down of the whale in such excruciating detail... an editor should have been like "Really Herm? Are you writing a novel or a technical manual?"

You know what book i hated? Moby Dick I HATED it Kidding. Sort of. I feel like the assigning of specific books as it pertains to public education is kind of a sham. My junior year English teacher, rather than assigning us specific books, assigned us a year long "author study", wherein over the course of the year we'd read something like five books by one author, with part of the specific assignment being to seek out certain literary themes. By honing in on the themes rather than "read this because it's a textbook classic example of X, Y, or Z", he wound up with a short handful of Steinbecks and Hemingways anyway (along with one sad sap who got shot down trying to pick Harper Lee, and some assh*le (me) who picked Vonnegut). Making anyone read a book "because they should" is a joke that'll put people off of reading for a lifetime because they were forced to trudge through the monotony of Fitzgerald's thesis on the least relatable examples of class separation. I got lucky in that I landed on my favorite book of all time through an assigned read, but I always already a reader to begin with. I'm sure one of my classmates walked away from the posited observation that the sunset is just as golden and breathtaking from the wrong side of the tracks as it is on the right f*cking hating the written word because rather than being tasked with finding a book that sought to minimize the differences at the core of the human condition, he was given THIS one because THIS one is a classic. F*ck, I love reading.

Anything by Chuck Palahniuk is the tits. He thinks of the most outrageous stuff and puts it on paper. His ever changing writing style is something that I tried to emulate and rip off.

Completely unrelated to reading, but just in case anyone was wondering if there's any sort of effectiveness behind that whole DDP Yoga thing, I got to post this tonight to my social media circle:
I'm four days into this sh*t.

Abysmal, sure, but I'm of the mindset that it if gets people reading then it's good by me. Not every book will be an Orwell classic. Not every genre is for everyone. But if you're reading, that's fantastic. If I remember tomorrow after I finish my RP up, I'll send you guys a picture of the books I'm reading through for research for my PhD. My focus is Middle Eastern and Enlightened European but my advisor thought since much of the Middle East and post Enlightenment came from war and sickness that I should do a few weeks of medical treatments from the times, war medicine, spiritual healing, stuff like that. A couple of the books are fantastic while some are the biggest chores ever.

I'm of the train of thought that you should really only establish one character, for a long period until it has run its course. A new character sounds fine and dandy, a refresh can be good, but don't expect ideas to run along like a waterfall. No character off the bat is ever perfect, but experience in writing that character will take you further rhan starting over. Good luck to those who do it.
I've had 3 characters here, and the only one still around is a character entirely different today than what he once was.

Currently going through the last couple canon novels I haven't read yet. Working on Aftermath: Life Debt right now. After that it's Bloodlines

You know, I almost wonder what Big would have done with that. Some sort of conspiracy theory about WFWF wrestlers being taken out, perhaps?
