Well, I couldn't merge the two threads, unfortunately. The other thread was on the third page and hadn't been posted in for quite some time, so it appears the conversations in there ran their course. I am going to keep this thread as the main Star Wars thread going forward, as a fresh start. All is well.. I appreciate you looking into it. Really excited for Rogue One.. The word is that Darth Vader is going to have a real prominent scene that shows off how terrifying he truly was.. So I'm beyond stoked to watch Darth Vader wreck sh*t at full Force. All the beach scenes look dope. While cool, I have to say that I hope they don't go too "visual" with it. That's my only qualm when sequels are done for films that came out years before technology advanced to the point it has. I don't want Vader to set off like a Force hurricane or some such nonsense. You look back and say "well if he was that bad ass why didn't he do that in the OT?" Did anyone hear the newest fan theory making the rounds? Normally I don't pay much attention to random guesses, but this one actually is intriguing. I'll try my best to describe it and I'll put it in spoiler tag so people don't have to read it if they don't wanna... In this pic we see the main protagonist dressed as a tie fighter pilot... Some are speculating she could be this tie fighter next to Vader. Han takes out the one, and then the other just veers into Vader for no reason... ... As if they were sacrificing themselves to take out Vader & the help Luke. Now I'm not saying it's true. Especially cause you hear a guys voice saying "look out" before hitting Vader. But I still think that would be a cool way to tie the two films together. And a cool way for Jyn to go out a hero. I can dig that. I'm all for that. I feel like I'm one of the few that really liked Gareth Edwards take on Godzilla back in 2014.. That dude has some AMAZING visuals and I can't wait to see what he does with a Star Wars story. As a very big Godzilla fan, I was prepared to be disappointed by the 2014 film...but I was happily blown away by it. After that, I'll watch any movie Edwards makes.

You look back and say "well if he was that bad ass why didn't he do that in the OT?"hahahaha, I totally understand what you're saying and really hope that doesn't happen.. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with Vader, mainly because dude was the most powerful Jedi to ever exist.. Hopefully it's not something like a Force Hurricane or anything like that.. While I am excited, I am definitely nervous.. But when it comes to Luke F'N Skywalker.. My heart is 100% set on watching him go ape sh*t in Episode 8.. Like if the credits roll on Episode 8 and Luke didn't show us his full power and ability, I will have a gigantic void in my life.

I just wish Star Wars could have a 10/10 female actress in it again. Portman set the beauty bar far too high. Just bring her back in some force way. I don't even care, I just want more Natalie Portman.

Like she wanted to care, but at the same time her voice didn't wanna care. Same with Adam Driver.

Rey and Finn had excellent chemistry with each other as opposed to nobody having any chemistry with anyone in the prequels. I know some people like the prequels, and hey to each their own. Most people who do were very young when they came out, so I get it. TFA wasn't perfect, but it was actually a fun, enjoyable movie that had the feel of the Star Wars universe and wasn't a bunch of people giving wooden awful dialogue to green screens and boxes.

I think the prequels ruined the originals for me, simply due to how dated the original movies look like after you watch any of the prequel movies. And Episode 1 had one of the best castings of all time, to be fair. Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Kiera Knightly, Ian McDiarmid. That is a pretty who's who in the movie business. Even if both Portman and Knightly were basically teenagers.

You have some of the best actors and actresses of our time, and yet all of them except for McGregor turned in some of the dullest and most wooden emotionless performances I have ever seen. The blame lies on Lucas and not the actors though. Terrible writing and direction on his part. He was so focused on trying to make things look good, that he ignored everything else. He also had a lot of advanced tech that made no sense being set decades prior to the original trilogy. It felt like a completely different movie universe.

I like how in the prequels there are these super advanced droids and shit, then in the originals there's like a obviously fake TIE Fighter like, cool. I guess? I also like the over the top lightsaber duels, with all the flippy shit. Way cooler than a swing every 5th minute like in 4-7.

A lot of it probably has to do with your age, and likely having seen the prequels first. The advanced ships and droids were part of my problem with the prequels because they didn't fit the Star Wars universe. Especially in a time frame set decades before A New Hope. The lightsaber duels were mostly pretty cool I will give you that. The problem is the story that tied everything together was just putrid.

I was born in 88, so, when the Prequels came out I had just reached that age where everything new is the greatest, and everything old was meh, and when it comes to Star Wars that still sticks around. Obi-Wan vs Maul is still the greatest lightsaber battle in all the movies. I doubt anything will top those 2 minutes.

Force choking or Force pushing people left and right, just cutting mother ers down with his lightsaber. That would work for me. Too bad her performance was wooden and the prequel movies were total crap. But that is all George Lucas's fault. That said, Daisy Ridley was pretty garbage in Episode 7. It felt so... Careless? Like she wanted to care, but at the same time her voice didn't wanna care. Honestly, part of me wants to tally that up to her being English.

I think Edwards has zeroed on Vader being an absolute monster...and he should be. The Death Star plans should be priority 1 for the Empire....that's why they have sent Vader.

Daisy Ridley isn't a seasoned vet in the acting world, so I didn't expect her to bring us an Oscar worthy performance.
But I still thought she did fantastic and saw a massive amount of potential in her and where she is going in the future.. She is extremely talented.
John Boyega is a fantastic actor, and he has been for a few years.
Those two bounced off of each other very well and it was fun to watch them interact.

All the advanced technology and such in the prequels probably wouldn't have stood out so much if they were more grounded in practical effects. The over reliance on CGI for the prequels made everything look too shiny and new, which contrasts greatly with the look of the OT.

What a lot of people didn't get(still don't) is that the shiny nature of the sequels is a direct & deliberate reference to the Roman Empire and the Dark Ages in Europe that followed its collapse. When the Empire rose it monopolised and enslaved the technologically advanced alien races that created all these wonderful ships etc and turned them into the foundries for the Empires war machine. There was a deliberate intent to highlight places like Naboo, Coruscant etc to show how vibrant and colourful the galaxy was BEFORE aul Palps took over. In the OT we see a lot of Tattoine.....we see the inside of the Death Star.......a mining facility.......a forest moon.......a frozen world and the only ships we see are the rag tag gatherings of the Rebel Alliance and the grey colourless war machine of the Empire. it was quite brilliant IMHO.

Above post is exactly right. Love the contrast between 4-6 and 1-3. There's a completely obvious reason George chose to do them in the order he did and this explains it. I get it. A lot of it probably has to do with your age, and likely having seen the prequels first. The advanced ships and droids were part of my problem with the prequels because they didn't fit the Star Wars universe. Especially in a time frame set decades before A New Hope. The over reliance on CGI for the prequels made everything look too shiny and new, which contrasts greatly with the look of the OT. There is more CGI if not just as much in Ep. 7 than any given prequel. I'm not sure where this idea comes from that the prequels weren't 'practical' either. There's all sorts of makeup, costume design, set pieces, miniatures...I've never understood this argument. Does it look fantastical at times? Yup, it takes place in outer space. Love the prequels, love the originals, think there is terrible acting in both and also don't think it matters, really. That having been said, I thought Daisy Ridley was great in a movie that I unfortunately didn't love. The imagination is missing for most of it in trying to placate to too many opinions. It lacks the risks taken on creativity that all 6 other films had which means George Lucas was clearly missing. Ridley's a bright spot for sure. So much magic in the moment she pours water on to her green bread and it 'fluffs' up. These moments are featured throughout Star Wars and are what make it great, but I felt like this one was mostly missing them or just referencing ones from the past. Too many cooks in that kitchen. Also, the 1st conversation of Leia and Han after 30 years is awesome. The second conversation they have in the bunker where they're just basically talking about things that happened with Kylo or whatever and dancing around it as to not 'reveal' anything is as wooden, draining and painful as anything anyone could say the prequels are, if not worse. Even thinking of it makes me cringe and slump in my seat. I guess if that's how people felt over Anakin and Padme's dialogue on Naboo (I didn't feel that way) I finally understand. That said I hope Luke goes buckwild in Ep. 8 as well! Also Rogue One so far (after the first trailer) is the only 'spin-off' movie I'll go to, and it's mostly due to the consistency and attempts to connect the 6 movies (prequel actors, etc.). I'm looking forward to references to those movies in a way that feels fresh, original and creative and not shoehorned like Ep. 7. For the record I hated the new Godzilla and really enjoyed 'Monsters' so this will probably make or break Gareth Edwards for me. I have always disliked Boba Fett so I won't be going to that one as of right now. You couldn't pay me to go to a 'young Han Solo' movie, especially since Ep. 4 is already a 'young Han Solo' movie. Not happening. I am now the biggest villain in the thread, sorry Chili.

There is a lot of CGI in Episode 7, but it blends much, much better than the Prequels did. The Phantom Menace hadn't yet been swallowed completely by CGI, but AOTC and ROTS both were. I think a lot of Episode 7's issues were the fact that it was a literal retread of Episode 4, which I feel they did on purpose to reestablish the baseline of Star Wars after the prequels. I fully expect Episode 8 to bust out and be its own thing.
