I'd take that over a Reigns or Cena match any day of the week. Oof. Looks like we have to agree to disagree on this one. There comes stuff that makes me give up on things and Mantaur, Friar Ferguson, and Duke Droese are those things. Cena is a legit, not campy character that you could actually imagine being a wrestler. Reigns as well. They actually make sense in a wrestling ring. Regardless at the end of the day wrestling needs gimmicks whether they're good or bad. One of the reasons people look back on the old days with fondness is gimmicks. Same can be said about kayfabe. Those 2 things don't exist in today's wrestling and it really hurts the product IMO.

It always added more to the moment, but unfortunately that isn't exactly the WWE's fault. And back to your other point, the thing with fondly looking back on gimmicks is that people tend to fondly look back on good gimmicks. When people think of Taz they don't praise the Tazmaniac, they praise the character he transitioned to, the Taz we know and love today. Another gimmick is Naked Mideon. No one thinks that was a good decision. People only look back at it because of how stupid it was.

I know there were a a lot of crap gimmicks over the years but there were a lot of good ones as well like you mentioned with Taz after the Tazmaniac period. It's what I grew up watching way back in the day and now it's just not the same without em.

In fairness, when someone says "I miss gimmicks in wrestling", I don't immediately conclude them to be saying "I sure miss Duke the Dumpster and Mantaur". I take it to mean that they miss gimmicks that were actually popular and successful, like the Road Warriors, Iron Sheik and Mankind.

In my defense, The Brain, you said that wrestling needs gimmicks whether they're good or bad. They don't need bad anything. They should always focus on making good, creative gimmicks.

It wouldn't surprise me if Beefcake were selling bootleg Hogan merch but Hogan calling him out on twitter almost screams Hogan, or both guys, trying to start "work" shoot and trying to stay relevant.

He really was from Iran. He really was a championship wrestler. It was just his personality amped up to 11. Roddy Piper really played the bagpipes and wore a kilt and fought on the streets. Macho Man was really intense and flamboyant. The best gimmicks weren't "gimmicks". They were just intense versions of the guys.

That's kinda like saying that the Brooklyn Brawler isn't a real gimmick because Steve Lombardi really is from Brooklyn and liked to smoke cigars. It was a gimmick because he wasn't really a sheik, neither was he loyal to the Ayatollah, nor did he despise America. These were all kayfabe contrivances used to market him as a character. Roddy Piper straddles the line since he wasn't really from Scotland, so that whole aspect of his character was kayfabe. Roddy Piper might not have been a gimmick character but the character most certainly utilized gimmicks to get over. I'll agree on Macho Man, as there was really no aspect of his character that didn't just come completely from Randy Poffo's persona.

The main point I guess I was trying to make is that those were real guys who amped up their real characteristics. There's not really gimmicks anymore because everyone would be amped up gamer fanboys.
