What is strange is that the ones with the damaged packaging have the best paint job usually lol a lot of the time so you could sit in the store for hours comparing 4 or 5 of the same figures paint job and packaging.

I've watched scalpers damage figures on purpose. It's not an everyday thing but I've seen it a few times over the years. However, I've seen Walmart boxes unloaded damaged more times than I can count. So the issue is more in how the store is handling the boxes from what I can tell. Walmart is just the absolute worst. The fact that they're starting to get all of these exclusives, specifically the Retros, is infuriating.

Some of the Retro's I've got recently have marks on them and one even had the bubble coming away by at least 30%. These were straight from the sealed Mattel cases as well. I spoke to a couple of suppliers and they have searched through scores of boxes and said they are finding lots have dents and scuffs straight out of the box. That's before they even get to some of these heavy handed store employees and customers who appear to take pleasure in bending cards etc.

I remember years ago on here a very popular board member Juice Winslow got slammed by other members because he would go to stores when they opened, get what he wanted, wreck the carding of the other figures to deter scalpers from buying them and leave. Some people thought it was great vigilante justice, others thought he was ruining it for the people who collected moc in his area. My take is just don't collect moc it's so much more of a hassle. Yeah wasn't he bending the upper corners of the cards? Or was that somebody else? I definitely remember somebody bending the upper corners of the cards, like the way you would fold a book page in at the corner. I'm pretty sure he started that way and then would just outright mangle more sought after ones. Then he had a fit and disappeared one day.

So a little from column A and a little from column B. I did some hunting today and found the issue at 3 different Walmart stores. TRU and Target had mostly fine figures but a few bent up. Kinda shitty if people are doing this on their own. Oh well. Thanks for all your input guys!

Some of it is due to scalpers, they buy up all the figures they need & do something to destroy what remains on the shelves. Then put them on eBay or another auction site & sell them for twice the price. Should be illegal. Never seen this happen....ever

This sounds crazy, why wouldn't the scalpers just buy up the rest and resell them all then? I was actually just at the 2nd closest Walmart in my area to check out their retro stock and surprisingly even the ones in the shipper seemed to be in relatlively good shape compared to my closest store.

Good to hear! Did you see any Owens or Reigns there? Are you buying one of each figure or getting a couple extra to save?

I've just been sent this photo from a fellow collector on Twitter. I don't know why the stores feel it's OK to display figures like this when they're taking customers money. If they're clearance then fair enough, stick them in a bucket and half the price. It's not to do with space, it's just laziness. Put a few out on pegs and then replace them once they've been sold...

Apparently most of the Retro's were badly damaged. At least there's Owens and Reigns back in stores, I guess.

Now here's something to consider about smashed packaging. 99.9% of the time Walmart gets Hot Wheels cars shipped in Dump bins. People rummage through the dump bins looking for certain cars. While being rummaged through the backs of some cars get bent and damaged. I'm not usually a MOC Hot Wheels collector but I do collect certain cars MOC. It's maddening when I find a car that I want to keep MOC that has slightly warped carding. I'm like this with movie and TV cars since I buy 2 and one is kept MOC

Went to another local Walmart and sorted through 15 retros which most if not all were damaged. Had 6 warriors, 4 Undertakers, 3 Cena, 2 Lesnar. I would have bought another undertaker or 2 but the cards were so damaged I had to pass.

Since they changed the packaging for 2016, both the basics and elites use cheaper cardboard than Mattel used to use. It is thinner and less stronger so stuff like that happens. The packaging feels so cheap.

This just happened at my Walmart too. The remaining Hasbro-style figures are just dumped on the shelf without a peg. They could have easily put a peg in there. This was a part of downsizing the WWE section to about half of it's size.
