The upcoming Mae Young Classic is set to showcase some of the brightest stars in the world of women's wrestling, and WWE is doing everything in its power to make sure the presentation is perfect.
Jim Ross, who'll be the lead commentator for the tournament, revealed on the latest episode of The Ross Report that he and fellow Hall of Famer Lita had to redo the calls for 16 matches last week. JR pointed out that they didn't re-call the matches due to mistakes the first time, but rather for the sake of making improvements.
"I felt like we did a better job. The job wasn't bad the first go-around, but the creative change, the things that we were talking about were planned and now they had been tweaked," JR said. "That's entertainment, that's the business. Anytime you get a chance to do the rewrite, you're gonna do the rewrite. Always make it better, always make it better."
With Lita handling the color commentating, JR said they did their best to provide the fans with information they might not have known about the competitors to pique their interest and keep them invested in watching the tournament.
"I like the fact that it's a single-elimination tournament, the winners advance, the losers go home. Therefore it is an episodic production, so it goes from chapter one to chapter two, that kind of thing," JR said. "So if Lita and I do our job, which we really tried hard to do, we'll give you enough background on these ladies that you'll care about them enough to want to watch them participate in this tournament and see if they have to survive or if they have to go home."

Knowing what I know about the tournament...Im not real excited about this thing. They really should have done this live so people would be "forced" to tune in. Knowing the gals I was pulling for were mostly gone after the first round. I couldnt care less if I see this or not.

Why does wwe do these tournaments? I understood the Cruiserweight one, but why are they acting like this one is like some breakthrough for women's wrestling? I'm really getting sick of this women's revolution crap, it's good for the women on the roster, but I really could care less.

If you don't like Women's wrestling then don't watch it but don't crap on it because lots of others like it either.

If you don't like Women's wrestling then don't watch it but don't crap on it because lots of others like it either.
I never said that, some of the matches I enjoy, but I am sick of hearing week in and week out about the women's revolution. It sounds like a charity case at this point. Then they have a hell in a cell and a mitb ladder match and what is the reason for this? The women's revolution of course. |

Not sure why they wrong Tessa Blanchard so much. With her pedigree I would be vaulting her up to work with Charlotte and start the real 4 Horsewomen.

Yeah, i thought it was wrong for her to lose in the first round. Tessa vs Kairi should have been a second round match at the very least. I hope she gets signed and goes through NXT. They could really use Tessa. Between her and Toni Storm, those two could run the NXT Women's division with Ember Moon. |

JR is the kind of guy who was/is so good because of his genuine excitement and reaction to stuff when it's happening live. Not everything should be perfect on commentary because not everything is perfect as its happening live.

This is a bit off topic but I'd prefer a round robin style tournament (think G1 Climax; All Japan's Championship Carnival). That way everyone would get more than one match to get more exposure to a larger audience.

As a NWA/WCW fan JR was insufferable, always getting tag team member names wrong. I can't count the many times he mixed up "The Hawk" and "The Animal". He's part and parcel of the Attitude Era with Lawler so I guess that's where everyone fondly remembers him through rose-coloured glasses. But all I remember is "BY GAWD BY GAWD STONE COLD STONE COLD STONE COLD" ahh shut up already JR. |

His NWA work was phenomenal overall; maybe even better than his WWF stuff because he was able to focus more on what was happening in the match instead of selling storylines and stuff. He would always screw up names no matter when he was announcing, though. That never bothered me about him. |
