WWF Superstars 9-24-88. Your hosts Vince McMahon and Jesse ''The Body'' Ventura''
Jim Duggan vs Antonio Chapotlin- Easy win for the Glens Falls native as he wins with his signature 3 point stance clothesline. Dino Bravo and Frenchy Martin appeared briefly at ringside during the match with their ''USA is not ok'' sign. USA USA USA!!. Their feud would last a good few months leading into early 89.
Next up is the infamous debut vignette for Akeem. I gotta say the gimmick was cheesy as hell but man I enjoyed the hell outta of it. Seeing him dance in place was gold. Track this one down if you haven't seen it as it's a much watch for old school fans.
Tito Santana vs Tony Ulysses- Flying Forearm for the win. Tito was floundering around this time as Strike Force was out of commission as Rick Martel was out with a kayfabe injury.
The Bolsheviks vs Tony Suber & Scott Colontonio- The Russians with the win with a backbreaker/forearm combo. I liked The Bolsheviks. Just a good ol' rough and tough team from the 80s.
Next up is the event center with Sean Mooney who was relatively new to the WWF scene as he came in during the spring of that year. It's a face paint edition as we hear from the WWF Tag Champs Demolition and the IC Champ The Ultimate Warrior!!
King Haku vs Martin Leroy- Side kick to the face ends this in a hurry. They were pushing Haku for a little while here which I liked.
Another Event center with comments from The Hart Foundation(who were feuding with Jimmy Hart over contract issues) and Rick Rude ( who was feuding with Jake Roberts during this time.
Powers of Pain vs Bob Emery & Chance McQuaid- ''The Baron'' aka Baron von Raschke was the POP manger for a brief time here. Powerslam/Diving headbutt combo for the win. IMO POP as faces just didn't work. I'm glad they did the double turn at SSeries that year with Demolition.
Next up we got an in arena podium interview with Craig DeGeorge ( Remember him?!?!) interviewing Outlaw Ron Bass. He was feuding with Brutus Beefcake during this time period. Bass kayfabe injured Brut-I with his spurs to make me him miss out on his IC title match at SSlam. A haircut is coming soon for you Outlaw!!
Jake Roberts vs George South- DDT end this in about 3 minutes. Jake was in a heated feud with Rude over Jakes wife during this time. I enjoyed this feud a lot. Long standing feud as well as it started in the Spring and ended in the fall.
Rougeau Brothers vs Lanny Poffo & Bert Centeno- Jimmy Hart was here as this was where he was introduced as their new manager. Poffo would mainly be a jobber until the spring of 89 in which he was repackaged as ''The Genius'' scroll and all. Easy win for the Rougeaus here.
Last event center with Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake wraps us up.
Overall for the Akeem vignette alone, I'd give this show a watch. As always don't expect much from the matches on these weekend morning shows. Final verdict- Recommended

The Beefcake/Bass situation wasn't censored here in Canada. We got to see Bass run those spurs across Beefcake's head and see the blood come out. We also got to see Bass blade Beefcake before the spurs went across his head too! Oops!

Wasn't Tony Suber a NWA jobber? I guess jobbers were not exclusive to a territory?

Wasn't Tony Suber a NWA jobber? I guess jobbers were not exclusive to a territory? I've seen NWA jobbers in the WWF and vice versa so yeah I'm gonna say they weren't exclusive.

Your Hosts: Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura
20 man battle royal for a trophy- Run of the mill battle royal here. Bob Uecker on commentary made the match for me. Bad News Brown eliminates Bret Hart after a double cross which would kick start the face turn for the Harts which would be completed the Summer.
Ted Dibiase vs Jim Duggan- Mid-South anyone? Not a bad match here for the short time they were given. Dibiase with the win after interference from Andre The Giant. $$$ talks!!
Don Muraco vs Dino Bravo- Just a basic power man match here. Muraco wins by DQ after Bravo throws the ref into a forearm. Next...
Ricky Steamboat vs Greg Valentine- Best match of round 1 and quite possibly the whole tournament here. When you got two solid workers you're definitely in for a treat. This was the Dragon's last hurrah in the WWF until 1991. Hammer with win after rolling though a Steamboat crossbody with some pulling of the tights. A miscarriage of justice indeed!!
Randy Savage vs Butch Reed- Reed was in control most of the match until the Savage come backs for the win with the flying elbow. Reed would leave the WWF pretty much right after this event.
One Mang Gang vs Bam Bigelow- I like both guys but Thank God it was kept short. OMG wins when Bigelow is counted out even though he was on the apron. Bigelow would be gone by the Summer which is a shame as I thought his face run had potential.
Infamous Hulkster interview as he talks about Donald Trump and his Plaza falling into the ocean. It's odd and awesome all at the same time. WHATCHA GONNA DO!!??
Rick Rude vs Jake Roberts- A very long and boring match which is surprising considering who's in it. The crowd was very restless with this match that's for sure. This would be the start of their feud which would last until the fall. Nobody wins here as the time limited expires. Both are eliminated.
Hogan,Andre,Savage,Dibiase,OMG,Muraco,Valentine all advance to round 2!
Hercules vs Ultimate Warrior- Another match thankfully kept short. This was a breather match for the fans before the 2nd round. Warrior wins by falling on top of Hercules for the pin ala Bret/Austin at SSeries 96.
We get a great recap for Hogan/Andre. One of the best built feuds ever in my book.
Andre The Giant vs Hulk Hogan- Andre was near the end by this point but the match is still watchable. Both guys get DQed for using a chair even though Hogan used the chair 1st. Again for the names in the match it makes this match passable.
Ted Dibiase vs Don Muraco- No Virgil here as he was suplexed on the floor by Hogan in the last match. For a 5 minute match it was ok. Dibiase with the hotshot for the win.
Randy Savage vs Greg Valentine- The only other match to come close to Hammer/Dragon. Good stuff here in the about 6 minutes they were given. Savage with the roll up for the win. DIG IT!!
Savage,Dibiase, OMG(with a buy) are the last 3.
Honky Tonk Man vs Brutus Beefcake for the IC Title- Another boring match here. DQ finish when Jimmy Hart knocks out the ref. He would get a haircut for his troubles after the match.
Andre/Bob Uecker interview up next. If you haven't see this YouTube it. Priceless.
Heenan/Islanders vs Bulldogs/Koko B Ware- run of the mill 6 man here mostly for comedy purposes. Being a Heenan fan pretty much my whole life I marked out when he got the winning pin.
Randy Savage vs One Man Gang- Another match really short and for good reason. Everybody knew what the finals would be at this point. Savage wins by DQ after OMG uses Slick's cane.
Demolition vs Strike Force for the WWF Tag Titles- Good power vs speed match here. Demolition wins the belts here and would hold them a good year and a half. Can't beat 80s tag wrestling.
Randy Savage vs Ted Dibiase for the WWF World Title- these two always had great chemistry together and it shined through here. Savage with the flying elbow for the win. The post match celebration was so well done. Overall just a great feel good moment to end the show.
Final thoughts: This Mania is LONG but if you're a fan of the era and tournaments(like me) then definitely give it a watch. Seeing Randy Savage win the big one is worth it IMO. Verdict: Recommended

I'm sure you are one of many who thinks Savage should have faced Steamboat in the second round. That would have made the show much better. Not that the show wasn't good. Well I think it was. Some people think it sucked. Too long? What about the past two manias? 5 hours(7 if you include preshow)! I think it would have been more interesting had Dibiase won the tournament. Supposedly that was the original plan. Anyways, great review! Suggestions- WM 5 or one of the CHV that was recently added on the network.

Savage/Steamboat 2 would've been nice but what we did get in Hammer/Savage was a nice little treat.
WM 4> any modern Mania anyday of the week.

Wm 4 didn’t have anything special match quality wise but good drama Andre/Hogan, Macho rise to champion. Still not one of the better wrestlemanias. But the network wrestlemanias have been long just be long, especially 32 which wasn’t very good.

Your host- Randy Savage
Ultimate Warrior vs Earthquake- Typical Warrior match here with Quake getting in most of the offense until Warrior comes back with a bodyslam and a splash for the win.
1st ''Coliseum Video Exclusive'' of the tape here as we have the manager cam with Jimmy Hart. It's basically him mic'ed up as Big Boss Man vs The Mountie. No commentary here on top of it. Boss Man with the win to end this pointless segment.
Rockers vs Power and Glory- Not a bad little tag match here but nothing special. P&G win when the Rockers get counted out after chasing Slick ringside. Too bad we didn't get to see the Power Plex. Loved that finisher.
Ted Dibiase vs Texas Tornado- Short match here to further Dibiase's feud with Virgil as he was ringside. Tornado with the win after Virgil trips up Dibiase from the outside.
Haku vs British Bulldog- Pretty good match for Haku standards. Bulldog with a crucifix pin for the win at about a little under 8 minutes. Haku would be pretty much gone from the WWF by the Summer until his one off return at the Rumble in January.
Next up is Barber Shop Grooming tips with Brutus Beefcake- a harmless albeit pointless segment but come on Brut-I putting mud from the dead sea on the dudes face?
Greg Valentine vs Rick Martel- Not bad but not these two finest hour. Both get counted out but Martel gets trapped in the figure four post match. No Arrogance this time!!
Koko B Ware vs Warlord- Decent speed vs power match here. Warlord with the power slam for the win. To quote Slick ''Turn off the lights the parties over!!''
Hart Foundation vs Legion of Doom- Best match on the tape by far. Harts even play the heels which is a nice treat. LOD win after Animal powerslams Bret. Seriously track this match down though as it displays the great tag wrestling of the Golden Era.
Marty Jannetty vs Tanaka- Odd match to end the tape but still good.Rockers/Orient Express always had great chemistry so no shock it shined through here in a singles match. Jannetty with the win after a Tombstone.Rock n Roll, Strut n Stroll, Slam n Jam all day!!
Overall not bad here with every match being good to passable. Watch the LOD vs Harts match as you won't be disappointed. And oh yeah feel free to skip the CHV exclusive segments
Final Verdict-Recommended

Can I give you some advice? It's a cosmetic choice but bolding the matches before the actual review makes it easier to read.

Your hosts: Tony Schiavone,Mike Tenay and Dusty Rhodes
Dean Malenko vs Eddie Guerrero for the WCW Crusierweight Title- Great match here as was the norm with these two. Big props to the DC crowd here as well as they were white hot. Eddie retains with his signature frog splash. Off to a good start for now...
Scott Hall comes out for an interview. Survey says...1 more for the good guys! Giant comes in for a chokeslam to end it. This was all building to Giant/Nash who were supposed to wrestle at this event but Nash backed out last minute.
Team NWO:Randy Savage,Vincent,Scott Norton vs Team WCW:Steiners/Ray Traylor- Typical run of the mill 6 man here. It's odd to see Savage in basically a throwaway match here. NWO with the win after a Macho elbow drop. Moving on..
Goldberg vs Steve ''Mongo'' McMichael- HORRIBLE match here. Goldberg was green as hell here still as he just came in a few months prior and Mongo well he was never good to begin with. It still boggles my mind they gave him a US Title run prior to this. Goldberg gets the win after a jackhammer. To quote Jim Ross this was bowling shoe ugly. Next..
Chris Benoit vs Perry Saturn- It was originally Raven vs Benoit but changed last minute( more false advertising!!) Decent match here though. Saturn with the win after the Rings of Saturn. That finisher always looked painful as hell. This Benoit/Flock feud would continue into 98 with DDP getting involved.
Buff Bagwell vs Lex Luger- Another bad match here that went nearly 20 minutes. I always thought Bagwell had potential but this match did him no favors. Bagwell with the win after Scott Norton clocks Luger with a chain. Oh yeah this match was a Russo special with interference galore from the NWO.
DDP vs Curt Hennig for the US Title- not bad but definitely underwhelming. I would've had the Flair/Hennig blow off here instead but oh well. DDP with the Diamond Cutter for the win and title. He would go on to hold the belt for a good 4 months. Side note here this was the 1st babyface win of the night. Goldberg was a heel in his match.
Eric Bischoff vs Larry Zybyszko with Bret Hart as ref- If Bischoff wins NWO gets control of Nitro, If Zybszko win he gets Scott Hall at Souled Out. Another awful match here as was expected. Instead of giving Bret a match they give em this. Way to go WCW. Larry tried here but no way this match wasn't going to be a failure. Zybszko with the win after choking Bischoff out. ABYSMAL.
Sting vs Hollywood Hogan for the WCW World Title- We are finally at the match which had such awesome build to it and on top of it the booking wrote itself. How does it end? With a ''screwjob'' ending as Nick Patrick ''fast'' counts Sting even though it was a perfectly normal count. Sting with the win after locking Hogan in the Scorpion Deathlock with Bret calling the fall. Terrible all around here. Sting had very little offense here which adds on to the stupidity of the booking for this match. 20 years later and this still leaves a sour taste in my mouth. This wasn't the official nail in the coffin of WCW but it was a big blow.
Overall while Guerrero/Malenko and Benoit/Saturn were good matches, it just isn't enough to save this trainwreck of a PPV. Final Verdict: AVOID

Starcade 97 should have been a home run show with the buyrate they had. Souled Out 98 the following month was much better!

Per @anthony18's request
Your hosts: Sean Mooney and Lord Alfred Hayes
Jim Duggan vs Boris Zhukov- I can tolerate Zhukov in a tag situation but as a singles he was horrible. Old Glory wins when Duggan hits Boris with his trusty 2x4. HOOOOOO!!!
Haku vs Ron Garvin- Good ol' fashioned brawl here. This match was nothing to write home about but to see these 2 beat the tar out each other for about 6 minutes this was fine. Both get counted out after brawling on the floor.
Bushwhackers vs Powers of Pain- Typical Bushwhackers comedy match here. I believe this match was on another CHV I wanna say the 1st Supertape. Whackers with the win by DQ after Mr. Fuji hits Butch with the cane.
Akeem vs Hercules- Another recycled match this time from a PTW episode during the fall of 89. Bad match here but at least it was kept short. Herc wins by DQ after Slick pulls down the top rope.
Dino Bravo vs Tito Santana-Best match on the tape but that ain't saying much. Bravo with the win after countering the forearm with his signature Side Suplex.
Overall there is very little positives I can about this tape but it's only an hour long so that eases the pain.Verdict:Mild Recommendation.

What did you think of the segments where Mooney was acting like a "tough guy"?
