Survivor Series 97 is way too late imo. I’d say Pillman’s got a gun. Shawn was booed like crazy when he lost to Sid. So that’s two things back-to-back that demonstrated a significant shift both creatively and with the audience. By 97 you had a heel cheat to win the Royal Rumble in a traditional babyface spot. Then Bret turned heel. I’d say absolutely no later than SummerSlam 97 because after that you had DX running around and that’s 100% Attitude Era stuff. I mean fans were screaming Die Rocky Die in like April of 97. Agreed, 100%. The Pillman gun angle was pretty much an audition for a riskier product, but I feel like by the summer of 1997 the WWF was full-blown into the inaugural chapter of the Attitude Era.

It's somewhat difficult to say when exactly the era truly started but imo it was post WM13 at the very least with Bret's Heel turn and Austin's slow rise to becoming the FOTC which he achieved the following year by winning his first WWE championship from HBK.
Or you could argue the New Gen transitioned to the Attitude completely around the time DX was formed.

Why not make a topic about something new? If you don't want to discuss it, don't discuss it. Simple as that. There are tons of thread topics I skip on reading. I don't go in them and start knocking it. I like hearing other people throw things out there on it. I've been watching 1997 raw episodes all month so I like talking about it right now.

I get you have to read them, I too am a mod on a couple drumming forums. But that comment isn't necessary at all. Especially from a mod. Not trying to start something, just pointing that out.

The night after WM14. That's when the WWE started to feel different.

1997 in general is my consensus, but from a factual standpoint, the WWF debuted the "Attitude" logo that fall with their "Try Lacing My Boots" promo so there is no legitimate dispute that it could have started any later than that.
Of course, everybody has their own opinion on when they thought the product got edgier/cooler or what was the most entertaining timeframe from that era. That's just a totally different question.

It's a question with no definitive answer really. KOTR96 works in the sense of this new star being born who would in turn define the era, but they still slowly built him up. Pillman Has A Gun works in the sense that it was the first time something edgy was the focus of a show/storyline...but it was an extreme they never revisited. DX works because their actions are what became the norm for the era but they always played second fiddle, atleast in terms of crowd popularity, to Austin. Montreal? It sure works as it was what pushed and created the McMahon character but like DX it was always behind Austin.
We'll never know, personally I always look at IYH: Mind Games and a promo with Austin, Pillman and Owen Hart calling out Bret, it was the first time we really got to see the Stone Cold character shine in a prominent role and you believed him calling out Bret was a threat. His language, the mannerisms of both Austin and Pillman were exactly what the era was about, heck the whole event had this very dark look and feel to it.

To me personally, it was when Bret Hart shoved Vince McMahon down on his ass and went on that tirade after the cage match on RAW. That was when things really started to turn, in my opinion, and Vince was more than just "the announcer". I agree with this. Although I consider stuff like “Austin 3:16 at KOTR” and “ Pillman’s got a Gun” shades of what was to come, the start of the Attitude Era was 3 back to back events. The first being the promo that you were mentioning that took place after Bret’s Cage Match with Sid. This was different, and was believable that Bret had reached a breaking point, after complaining about being screwed continually since his return. The second event was the following Sunday at WrestleMania 13. The crowd started to really get behind Austin and boo Bret, and by the end of the match Austin was a face without actually having to turn. All he had to do was pass out instead of tapout. Of course I’m sure turning him into a face was helped by not only Bret’s tantrum from the previous Monday but with Bret not letting go of the Sharpshooter after the match was over. Which leads us to the next night on Raw, and Bret officially turning heel being the third event. It was a great promo from Bret and turned the number 1 good guy from the past five years into a hated heel. Also I think the week that Bret shoved Vince down after the cage match was also the week they debuted the Titantron and started using the Raw Is War/Warzone names for the show

I voted Austin 3:16. June was also when the WWF Raw Magazine started up which I think had a hand in pushing what was happening on TV.
