Triangle of Terror
It was during the Summer of 1990 in which Sgt. Slaughter would make his return to the WWF but this time it was way different than before.Instead of being an All-American babyface he was an Iraqi Sympathizer. He would make his official return at SSlam that year in a Brother Love segment in which he gave Love the ''Greatest American Award'' plus in the process talking about how the USA has gone soft.Major heat here right off the bat.Following this he would unveil his manger General Adnan(an old AWA foe) with his first feud being newly turned babyface Nikolai Volkoff that Fall. The feud would culminate at SSeries that year in which Nikolai's team The Alliance would defeat Sarge's team The Mercenaries.Slaughter would look strong in defeat during this match as he eliminated 3 of the guys and lost the final fall by DQ.It was clear that he was on the path to the WWF World Title with nothing stopping him and in early 1991 the moment happened.
By the new year he was announced as the new #1 contender to Ultimate Warrior's WWF Title for the Royal Rumble. The match at first seemed like a squash as Warrior was dominating early but things would turn south for the champ as due to outside interference from Macho King and Queen Sherri he would in the end lose the belt to Slaughter to the shock and disgust of the fans and announcers alike. It was clear from this point where they were going with this angle as there was only one real American left who could take down the evil heel and that was Hulk Hogan. I liked the build to this match with Sarge doing great promo work here. On an episode of Superstars prior to WM VII Slaughter would burn a Hulk Hogan t-shirt.The original plan was burning an American flag but those plans were scrapped after fear of the backlash. You ain't kidding there. At WM VII Hogan would vanquish the demented drill Sgt. and become the WWF Champ for the 3rd time. I always thought this was a decent match with the blood being a nice touch. The feud though was long from over. Backstage footage was released post Mania which shown Hogan getting a fireball thrown in his face.Nice homage to the original Sheik here. From there he would introduce his newest member Col. Mustafa aka Iron Sheik. They would then be officially known as the Triangle of Terror.
The feud with Hogan would continue for months after with Sarge coming up short in getting back the belt.At one point they even had a desert storm match at an MSG house show. With the Gulf War long over by this point, The feud would officially come to an end at SSlam that year in which Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior would defeat the threesome with Sid as the referee. Following this Sarge would be taken off TV for a bit before returning later in the Fall as the All-American babyface in which he feuded with his former allies briefly before years end.Adnan/Mustafa would really do nothing of note following this and would be released by the Spring while Sarge would hang on until the Fall(mostly in the low card)of 92 before taking an agent job for a little bit.
Overall...I can only imagine how scared he was during this run considering all the death threats he got but man did he play this role to a tee.I can recall stories he would tell in which the security he had to have for this role was HUGE.But anyway Great transition from how he was in the 80s. Even though his reign as champ was brief I still enjoyed it.

Slaughter played his role well. Very convincing. It was odd seeing Iron Sheik going by another name. General Adnan served his purpose as manager.

I also wanna mention this theme used by Adnan/Mustafa from the Fall of 91 until their release in early 92.I'm so glad they finally released this a few years back.

When Sgt Slaughter came back to the WWF as a heel, I was confused as to how he was a good guy in GI Joe but a bad guy in wrestling. I was pissed when he beat the Ultimate Warrior to win the WWF Championship so I took great pleasure in seeing Hulk Hogan kick his ass, especially in the MSG Desert Storm Match. It was also funny how the Iron Sheik was Iraqi all of a sudden. The Triangle of Terror helped unite Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior-the best team ever was, the best team ever made

I didn't mind the angle, Sarge played his role to a tee. It was odd that they brought back the Sheik to play an Iraqi after being probably the most famous wrestler from Iran. Could they not have found another wrestler from Iran to play that role? Wonder what the WWF would have done if the Gulf War went on longer than it did, would they have continued with the group or would they have turned Slaughter anyway.

The character change worked perfectly for the time but it ran its course at Mania. Hogan and Warrior kind of swapped roles in the summer of 9w compared to a year prior. In 90 Hogan had the big drawing feud with Earthquake while Warrior was with Rude. In 91 the Warrior-Taker and Jake stuff was hot and Hogan had the Slaughter feud that really felt dead to me. Too bad Warrior was fired after Summerslam.

I personally loved the gimmick (and the jacks two pack was pretty decent too!). I’m a fan of the Iron Sheik and really liked him as Colonel Mustafa (and it must have taken some balls for him to play an Iraqi considering the history of conflict between the two nations).
I remember reading that the WWF had to pretend the war was still going on at some point to keep the feud going and that Sarge took to wearing a bullet proof vest for his own safety. Also, the WWF claimed they had to move the venue of WMVII because of safety concerns, but there were conflicting reports claiming ticket sales had bombed and had no chance of filling the bigger venue.
I would have liked Slaughter to have held the belt a while longer and got more of an upper hand over Hogan before ultimately succumbing to the Hulkster. But it was a pretty brutal match at WM and felt like a change of pace from the usual Hogan match.
