Friar Ferguson
Following stints in Mexico and the GWF, Mike Shaw would make his way into the Federation during the Spring of 1993. His gimmick would be that of a monk straight out of the monastery. His one and only appearance would come on Raw that April against regular jobber of the era Chris Duffy. In the end Friar would pick up the squash win after sitting on the poor ham n eggers face.Post match as he was walking up the aisle he would squirt ''holy water'' in the fans mouths. The catholic church was not happy to say the least with this gimmick and just like that after one appearance the plug was pulled. He would be repacked 2 months later as Bastion Booger(Check out his entry!)
Overall...Yeah no way was this gimmick getting off the ground.Another in the long list of''what were they thinking??!!''

I always wondered why he didn't last.
Liked the Bastion Booger better. Even more than "Crazy" Norman.

I was just looking at Mike Shaw's Wikipedia and have a few observations but first...I thought Friar lasted a few appearances. I distinctly remember he and Bam Bam Bigelow having an altercation after Bigelow was beating a jobber and leaving the ring and Friar was coming to the ring. The gimmick was pretty awful but really, not any worse than a lot of the gimmicks of this era. Also Mike's body shape made this more of a parody of the Friar Tuck Robin Hood character.
As for his Wikipedia...it suggests he was given the Bastion gimmick as "punishment" for his weight. Why they would "punish" a newcomer to the WWF knowing he was already large and out of shape prior to his hiring seems like something odd to do but then again...Vince!
I'm disappointed he only had the one PPV appearance. Bastion was actually one of my favorites for the 1993 time period. My first WWF event was Bastion versus Owen Hart. I'm guessing WWF had him under contract but didn't do anything with him from January or February to August 1994, when he was released according to wiki. I know he had a match with Koko with Koko won shockingly.
His 2007 Raw appearance he and/or Dick Johnson are demeaned by Triple H. I'm sure it wasn't just a skit for TV but rather his insecurities from having once been a crappy gimmicked wrestler from 1995-1997 andd if it weren't almost always for who he knew, he would surely be teaching trainees at what would become of Killer Kowalski's school. Sorry, not a fan.
Lastly, on a sad note, I'm surprised he was only 53 when he died. I thought he had to be in his mid to late 40s in 1993. But 53 is too young.

Come to think of it, I do vaguely remember this myself as if I'm not mistaken he gave em a dropkick then ''blessed' the crowd afterwards. It had to be during this same Raw taping though as I know for sure the only match he had was with Duffy.
And yeah 53 is way too young. Shame.

I've never seen any actual matches, but I always read that Shaw was a pretty good big man in Stampede Wrestling.
The Friar Ferguson gimmick was silly. The Bastion Booger gimmick was humiliating.
I'm biased to those early Raw days of 1993 so my opinion is kind of skewed. The good, the bad and the ugly... I love it all from that era.

I remember hearing his stint as Friar Ferguson was brief but didn’t realise it was only one match! Amazing to think that Vince would have welcomed the bad press from the Catholic Church a few years later, but I guess the gimmick wasn’t worth it back then.
Oh and congratulations on reaching 50 pages with this thread

Are you reviewing the triangle of terror or just Slaughter on his own? Tough one to call but will go with the Iraqi trio
