Mattel did that in 2011 with Mattycollector. There were many great figures like The Rockers and King Kong Bundy but nobody bought them. RIP Matty Collector, way ahead of its time. Because MattyCollector sucked, I’m glad it’s dead. Terrible customer service, expensive shipping that wasn’t worth the quality, and they were barely promoted Seconded. Even the seemingly unstoppable MOTUC got killed because of how crappy their ordering system was, how they had zero countermeasures against bots and scalpers, their excessive shipping and abysmal customer service. And don't get me started on how they pushed the Thundercats when THEY KNEW Matty was about to die, and that the main team would never be completed. Burn in hell, Matty. I'm Corny, you're Russo! Want an actual good example of how to do things? Both Hasbropulse and the NECA store get it.

Unfortunately I need 3 (as is Attitude Era, without gear wrestler era, & now that that they’ve shown a BAF Ref Danny Davis I need a WM1 ref Patterson as well).

Here's the problem nobody is talking about in this thread. this "store exclusive" deal is decided for and pushed for BY Target & Walmart corporate stooges. And with Toys R Us gone, the options for Mattel to actually make money on products in this country are sooooooo small they aren't going to say no to anything. Retailers are trying to compete with Amazon, ebay, etc. They WANT you in the store. Their strategies are sneaky, conniving, slimy and calculated for everything including toys.
They know collectors and scalpers are out there, people are calling these stores every goddamn day with their stupid Brickseek stock alerts looking for POPs, Hot Wheels, etc. But regardless it's getting you in the door. So yeah you're looking for those figures but how many people in how many stores every single day are stopping in and while they are there they are grabbing a roll of paper towels, or a bag of Lays & a coke, or an XXXL polo shirt on clearance, or a new PS4 controller because theirs is all greasy with Cheetos dust....
that equals MORE money for the store and a sale they never normally would have had if they didn't lure you in with the idea of an Exclusive.
Now Mattel is on the other side of it and they want to make money too. If they refused to do something like this or tried to say that it pisses people off, Walmart would decrease their business with them and find some other companies. You'd see like 1 or 2 pegs...not rows...pegs...of basics or elites and most stores would just carry the Top Talent line (which I'm scared might be the way they are going anyway) so Mattel's compromise is that they will make cool Flashbacks they know collectors want instead of the exclusive being the 16th Demon Finn or 12th Braun in brown pants/black tank
its a completely shitty and stupid situation. but that's retail business in America.
My resolve to this issue is to FIX THE ddddDDdDddD DISTRIBUTION PROBLEMS. and don't have it so stores only get 1 or 2 cases of an Elite Wave. Make these figures a LITTLE more plentiful to find and the need for scalping/hoarding won't be there. I'm not saying there should be 20 in each store...but more than ONE would be nice. Or release them online at the store websites, Target has actually been good with that between Shark & Red Rooster...so do that with the other guys and then have them in stores.
The only other hope I have is that going forward Ringside is able to work something out with Mattel where they get these exclusives after the waves have hit retail and been out for awhile....like they did with that Alexander Wolfe. I'd rather buy from them at a little higher price than make daily stops at every Walmart & Target in CT & RI looking at Top Talent AJ Styles figures

If I’m looking for one of these, let’s say Sherri, not finding her doesn’t make me want to buy something else. Maybe a drink if it’s really hot out like this past week, that’s it. But if I buy something else while I’m looking for these it’s because I already knew I wanted or needed something else as well

I want all the legends! I am still not over Harley Race! What a huge mistake! Somehow this has to be rectified! Different packaging or something but just a shame for avid long-time collectors like me and others to not be able to find them anywhere. Same with Pat Patterson and it is taking my desire to want to collect the whole line less.
I used to collect all of the retro Hasbro figures ... I started to get back into the retros here and now they are stopping? I am still rooting for Mattel ... but they have to find a way to help us.

My sentiments as well. If I stop by for the sole purpose of looking for figures, not going to reward the store with a non-toy purchase for having to waste my time/gas. Sure I can pay more and order online. Downsides are that I don't know what shape the package will be or how the paint apps look. Plus I still like being able to find a figure on the pegs/shelves, part of the fun for me of collecting.

The feeling of actually finding one of the hard to find exclusives is one of the main reasons I enjoy collecting so much. I have searched high and low and have literally never found an exclusive in stores. Had to order all of mine from RSC or ebay. But I still love the hunt because I know I will find some eventually.

I love the nonstop complaining and crying over this Harley Race figure. If you wanted it so bad you would have purchased it off of eBay. Obviously the prices are ridiculous right now but you should have bought it when it was first released. I purchased it for $70 off of eBay when it was first released and I do not regret it. Sorry you all waited, knowing you would most likely never find it in stores, and now it is out of everyone’s price range.
I hate these store exclusives but I am an avid collector and I’ve accepted that if I want it I’ll pay to get it. I’m not going to wait hours driving back and forth with nothing to show for it. I got lucky once with a Pete Dunne but that’s the only one. I’ve purchased every other exclusive for higher than store value. Either pay more or don’t. But stop complaining. At the end of the day it’s a toy. No one NEEDS them.

Figure collecting is bigger than ever, unfortunately that means exclusives and chase figures of all makes are often scooped up by resellers and just collectors that want multiples. I see the chase figures as being a reason to return to the hunt. That’s the best part of collecting for me. Not ordering everything I want, get it to the house and that’s it. Also, if collectors continue to just preorder and do no shopping at retail, these stores will have less reason to stock figures. Leaving shelves bare and less likely to do more exclusives.

It's a two way street. For a niche behemoth like RSC to exist and serve its market as well as it does, someone somewhere is going to feel the pinch, i.e. the B&M retailers. In a pinch, the B&Ms are going to seek out ways to drive business back into their stores, i.e. product the competition (RSC) can't provide. Overhead, Mattel has widespread stake. As such, they have a vested interest in satisfying the needs of their specialized buyers and the B&M retailers. TL;DR - these "issues" aren't going away anytime soon.

I've never bought something I didn't intend to buy after checking a Target for figures. If they don't have the exclusive figure I'm looking for, I walk right back out the door with no purchase.

I can’t tell you how many Red Bulls/Slim Jims I bought at Walmarts, while shopping for Harley.
Thank HEAVENS for truck driving uncles hooking me up.

I wouldn't need to preorder if i knew it would be in stores. For example, Series 10 Retros. My favorite line and I knew if i didnt preorder them then there was a chance I would never get them (not for a fair price anyway). I have intentionally put off ordering Elite 67, 68, and 69 with the expectation that I will be able to find them in stores at some point. Even though there is a huge drought right now I dont recall a single Elite series that was never in stores.

Yeah - I do feel if Harley was that much of a want/big-deal for anyone, he was easily available on eBay for $50-$75 for a while... even at the beginning of the year (when there hadn't been any new Flashback S3 findings for some time) you could get one for less than $100.

Yea, I don't have time or interest to go on a hunt for poorly distributed stuff. I was lucky (lol) and got Harley for about $45 ish on eBay (I think I used eBay bucks so I didn't feel it) . Backlund I stumbled upon when getting a cheap cooler at walmart. I think he was easier since they had a giant wwe display. Our Target is still on NXT 1 and 2. I only like the Classics and just sold off 95% of my collection. Distribution of legends and Flashbacks is forcing me to consider being done with this line. In 2019, it should not be this difficult to give Mattel $25 + shipping for a toy.
