This is a classic Royal Rumble. You get to see the legends like Andre The Giant, Harley Race and Big John Studd. The Demolition start off the Royal Rumble match fighting each other. There is a competition between Ravishing Rick Rude and Ultimate Warrior. Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage build up the Mega Powers storyline. Harley Race and Haku have a match where the winner will be known as the king of wrestling. It was nice to see Big John Studd win the Royal Rumble and not Hulk Hogan.

I liked the PPV but its not in my top 5 rumbles. The undercard wasn't that good and after the Mega Powers were eliminated the Rumble was kind of boring. It was nice to see someone you wouldn't expect win the Rumble but it felt a little anti-climatic.

I am pretty sure everyone going in watching this for the first time felt Hogan was gonna be the winner. So when he got eliminated it really did take the energy out of the match.
Big John Studd winning made the most sense after Hogan was gone, since he was so huge. But it's a shame we didn't see an Andre/Studd showdown in the Rumble.
To me the 1989 Rumble is good, but it had so much potential to be great. Just the booking of the Rumble match itself ruined that.

LOVED this rumble, but as others said it coulda been better. It was great what they did with demolition, then andre 3rd, and the andre/jake snake thing. then the mega powers thing, but yea it cooled off after that. the big names were hulk, savage, andre, twin towers, studd. so yea when rest were eliminated it had to be studd. he's one of my all time favs and was stoked to see him turn good and win rumble. just wish it was a very intense, who's gonna take it, at the end with hulk, savage, andre, studd, twin towers all in at the end. but man for its 1st run as a ppv this was so exciting. i didnt get to see it on ppv, just pics of it for months in wwf magazine and glimpses on tv. seeing good guys fight good guys and bad guys fight bad guys was soooo cool at the time. got my vhs about a year after that but man it was awesome seeing for 1st time. loved the posedown, but i wish warrior/rude were also in the rumble. king match was great, 6 man tag was good. this is my 3rd fav rumble behind 1992,1990. The undercard was missing one more solid match and the Rumble definitely climaxed right in the middle portion. Although an unexpected winner is welcomed nowadays, one might argue a more current star at the time probably should have won it since it was only the 2nd Rumble and first being on PPV. Heels didn't get to walk out victorious very often back then but I thought Dibiase winning would've been a nice reward after his lengthy run with Hogan and Savage in the Main Event Scene. It would've also kept him at the very top of the mid card at worst. |

Folks wanted Hogan to win the RR BAD....when he didn't the air kinda got sucked outta it. Basically the Rumble was used as a vehicle to further the Mega Powers rift( which is fine) & after that Vince didn't give a crap who won it.
I found it strange Warrior wasn't in this RR to win it....He was already Vince's project. If he had won this and then dropped to Rude at WM5? Man oh man that would have been even more shocking.

As a BJS fan I was glad he got that one last big career highlight here.Not a bad Rumble match but yeah once Hogan was gone you could tell the crowd was struggling to care.
Haku/Race is the gem from this show. Two legit tough guys beating the tar outta each other for a good 10 mins.

I do remember though Savage teaming with Arn Anderson in this to help eliminate some people. I know it's every man for himself and such, but it seemed interesting that Savage was willing to team with a heel to eliminate some good guys. Maybe a foreshadowing of what was to come with Randy's heel turn in the next few weeks.

I like this Rumble too. The opening 6 man tag team match is pretty good. And the list of names in the Rumble match itself are just great as well. It's just a shame that the Haku vs Harley Race match was cut from the VHS tape.

Loved Savage's intensity after he gets eliminated by Hogan with him getting right up in his face. Ventura ripping on Hogan for eliminating his tag partner just adds to it. Good stuff.

I got the feeling they were really going out of their way to sell it was indeed every man for himself. The first one heels teamed with heels and faces teamed with faces and very rarely did you see the same sides fight or try to eliminate each other.

I think if Andre was in the ring with Studd and knew he would be the winner, Andre would have purposely thrown him out. Another thing is, I think the three back to back teams ruined the concept very early on. Luckily the next few rumbles seemed to have less of that. Demolition, Brain Busters and Twin Towers all had back to back entries. |

I watched this again last night. I liked Demolition beating down Andre, Jake the Snake using Damien to eliminate Andre and the Twin Towers looking like monster heels. It was a good thing Big John Studd won as this was one of 2 memorable moment in his babyface run.
