Was watching the C2E2 Q&A from Chicago with Cody Rhodes & The Young Bucks and there was a question about the AEW Video Game. Cody Rhodes fielded the question, and his answer was a confirmation of the speculation we've all read for months now.
The AEW video game will have the AKI engine that was used for various games such as; VPW, VPW2, WCW/NWO World Tour, WCW/NWO Revenge, WWF Wrestlemania 2000 & most famously WWF No Mercy. For those unaware, the company that created the basic game engine was AKI. That company was eventually sold / bought out and has since become a company named SynSophia (on Twitter). Months ago, Kenny Omega followed them, and they followed him back, thus leading to all the speculation. In the video you'll note Cody says giving the fans "what they want, the engine they want," takes some time. Rumor has been that AKI/SynSophia "lost" the original code. Thus, re-writing the engine, could in fact, take some time, as Cody suggests.
Anyways, here's Cody confirming that the AEW game will have the famous AKI engine and that it's in the works.

What is the big deal about the engine? Idc about all that mumbo jumbo, I just want a good game. did you never play no mercy on the n64? it’s considered a legendary game engine that still rivals, and in some’s opinion completely beats out, today’s wrestling games. obviously some evolution of the engine will need to occur, but for someone like myself who still games no mercy and wrestlemania 2000 with friends this is just awesome news. another great move by this company

I hope we get the entire roster if we get an AEW game. Like I want to be able to play as Peter Avalon!

For one I never owned a 64 when I was younger, and by the time I got into wrestling I got a PS2 and started with SYM & HCTP. I just don’t have an understanding of the differences in an engine and what makes it different (and perhaps better) than what we have now.

By "engine," we are referring to how the mechanics of the "wrestling controls" work, in-game, mid-match.
With the AKI engine, you'd use A for a grapple, or hold A for a strong grapple. Once grappled, you then have an array of moves to chose from. This holds true, be it in a standing grapple from the front, from behind, at a down opponents feet, his head, etc, so on and so forth. Obviously with a modern controller having 2 analog sticks, this will have to be adjusted to fit.
Either way, I much prefer this style of control to the way that Yukes/THQ or 2k have made things over the years. So, as a VPW2 die-hard, I'm so happy.
Also.. VPW2 is actually THE GOAT example of AKI's coding work. No Mercy was the final game they made, but it was a stripped down version of VPW2. Kenny Omega cites VPW2 as being his favorite game of all time, so hopefully they lean more towards VPW2 and a little less into No Mercy. I'll take a Mask Creator, Cutting Promos during your entrance, & Burning Finishers over a Hoe in a Smackdown Mall, any day.

I had some thoughts on maybe what would be nice to see here. Unlimited reversals of anything...yes please. Opponents finisher stealer like in WCW Revenge. (unlockable)Alternate attires, and attires from past Daniels/Curry Man, etc., plus affiliated wrestlers like the end sections of that wcw roster from japan (pwg? bar? GCW?). Choose whose on commentary that you hear for your match....please god call on Joey Styles for an alternate version Cheat codes section Intergender matches with any match type selection. Open ended Create a move section If a move doesn't fully connect, let it not give full power damage/recovery...ala only 1 foot of a full dropkick connects or something hits in wrong placement I am fresh out of brainpower, will come up with more later VPV

hoping for specialty matches and a feature similar to Smackdown HCTP where you can explore and fight all around the arena. Maybe even in the crowd like in smack down just bring it.
Definitely need tables match, blood & guts match (wargames cage, 2 rings), regular cage, street fight (misc weapons, tables, ladders), Unsanctioned match (barbwire, mouse trap board, etc.), iron man match.
Can't wait to sloth kick as orange cassidy

The existence of WCW vs. The World actually has always intrigued me, why did AKI (SynSophia) never develop another wrestling game for the Playstation? WCW vs. The World wasn't their first Playstation wrestling game in fact, they'd made a version of VPW for it.

I'm glad to see a lot more wrestling games that's not WWE being planned on coming out soon, between AEW wanting to put a game out, Yukes' mystery project, then I saw another wrestling project come out. As for them wanting to use the AKI engine, maybe cause the only N64 game I've ever played was WCW/nWo Revenge, but I never saw what was the big hype about the engine, move wise or graphic wise. Probably cause I'm so used to the Sony games that I don't see the big deal about it. Anyways, I'll definitely buy the game if it looks like a good game.

Copied from another forum but a mini-update nontheless:
AEW referee Aubrey Edwards was Chris Jericho’s guest on the latest installment of the Talk is Jericho podcast. During their discussion, she revealed that she is involved in the game’s development.
Edwards was not sure what she was authorized to reveal, aside from saying that the game is “very, very early on” in the development cycle. “It’s definitely a way’s out,” she said.
AEW Executive Vice President Kenny Omega, an avid gamer, is also involved. Edwards says the two of them talk a lot about the project.
Chris Jericho asked Aubrey what makes a good wrestling game. They know expectations are high. “It has to kick ass.” They are listening to feedback and will give the people what they want. They spoke about the importance of a robust Create-a-Wrestler suite.
She spent several years working on mobile games and believes that experience will help AEW deliver a great product.
Her gaming console of choice is the Nintendo Switch. She likes that it affords her the flexibility to play from home or while on the road traveling. This bodes well for a Switch release of the AEW game.
