I think the best thing about the Montreal Screwjob was the realization that they spent all this effort looking for a finish that made everybody happy and eventually resorted to screwing Bret Hart for real. Had that same thing been pitched to Bret as a work, it would have been the perfect finish to please all parties. A screw job was the perfect work/shoot finish. The only problem was they screwed Bret for real instead of screwing him as a work
It’s 100% not a work though. Just watch that Bret vs Shawn dvd and watch Bret talk about it. You don’t cry like that unless it hurt and still hurts. That’s real emotion.
McMahon never learned his lessons either as he did all this for Shawn who retired for 4 years only 4 months later

I know finances were not good and his contract was an albatross but I always wondered if they could have kept Bret around til Mania to drop it to Austin. Would've been a nice bow to their rivalry.

I might be one of the few that feels there’s a little bit of blame to go around for everyone that was involved.
Bret could’ve done business on his way out, seeing what a difficult spot he was putting the company in... but he didn’t. Shawn could have been less of a d**k to Bret and well everyone pretty much and avoided this... but he wasn’t Triple H and Vince didn’t have to do everything behind Bret’s back...but they did. Creative could have done something else other than to put two nuclear egomaniacs in the same match... but they didn’t
Way I see it, and all the stories that I’ve heard about it, every one that was involved shares a bit of the blame and regret on what happened that night.

I think that’s the old saying two wrongs don’t make a right. Can’t exactly vindicate Bret of his actions because of Shawns. I understand why he did what he did completely but I’m not saying he’s in the right either. Bret might have zero regret but who’s the guy that keeps talking about it to this day in every interview he’s on? Its not Vince, it’s not Shawn, certainly isn’t Triple H. It’s sad really because most of this generation doesn’t see Bret for the awesome matches he put on with guys like Bulldog, Owen, and Perfect. They see a guy that keeps living in the past. Angry about Montreal, angry about Goldberg, angry about how he was used towards the end of his run. Again completely within his right to be mad about all of those things, but I feel like his legacy at this point is being most remembered for it. I mean if you were doing a word association with Bret Hart, screwjob would be the first thing on most people’s minds.

Looking back on this mess almost 23 years later, All I can say is I wish Bret had a better ending to his WWF run.
Also this incident led to Vince leaving the booth which is a shame as I really enjoyed the team of him,JR and King that year. One of the very few 3 man teams I liked.
