I definitely wouldn't rule-out Mattel doing a Doink, maybe even pretty soon. I don't think the figure is needed because of how good the Hasbro was except for the fact of the orange card history makes this a figure that is needed, and I'm sure it is on the agenda of Steve and the team for that reason. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the Tugboat and Luger set The question is whether Ray Apollo is still under a WWE deal - we know that they have Bourne due to the New Gen arena, but the orange stripped attire would be necessary if they were going to make the orange card tribute (even if they change the action), and I don't think Bourne ever wore that gear. There were other Doinks of course but if they need the guy who wore the gear then maybe there could be a problem there but otherwise I think there's a decent chance Mattel go for him at some stage. Yeah I can see Mattel potentially doing a retro Doink. Yeah, Bourne was out of the WWF in late '93, and I think that orange/purple attire was worn by Apollo in '94. I wonder if the person performing the role will impact the figure or if they have the rights to make a Doink regardless, it's an interesting point. I hope Mattel do it justice, assuming they do it at all, it'd be a must-have for me. Still hoping for a Bourne Again figure, but not sure that will ever happen. I'm not sure why Mattel haven't done it if the WWE have the ability to produce ECW names. Steve has been asked about the possibility of making the Gobbledy Gooker a few times in the past given that the character is a WWE creation and obviously is under a mask, but he has answered that they need the actual performer under contract before Mattel can make the figure, even one like Gooker where the performer’s face isn’t visible. I remember he was asked about if they could make Gooker since they were making Maryse figures and she had had an appearance under the Gooker mask one time but I think he answered something about the outfit being far simpler when she did that appearance and he’d want to do the original costume, so they would need the original Gooker (Hector Guerrero) under contract. If I’ve remembered all that correctly then I’d guess that to do the orange stripped outfit then they might need Ray Apollo specifically under contract to make the figure. Mattel made that Doink in the Heartbreak Hotel Elite set some years ago so potentially they could still have that option - time will tell.

It's a good point, I just presumed that they could knock out a Doink regardless. It sounds like they'd need Apollo under contract, as you say, assuming the most recent Doink with the new gen arena is supposed to be Bourne. I always wondered what the deal was with the Doink figures, as the original was obviously Bourne, but the Bend Em was supposed to be face Doink, Apollo. I was always curious to know if Apollo got any kind of cut of the original Hasbro as he took over while the figure was still on shelves. I'd never really thought about the versions since then, and whether they were intended as being any specific version. I can't recall if anyone else played the character once Apollo took over, as Steve Keirn had done shows in towns while Bourne was still performing as Doink. 🤷

If the WWF is still using that name for merchandise and figures, it is most likely that they still own the rights to Doink/Doink the Clown. Even if Chella were able to get Keirn or Apollo, I doubt they could do Doink.

I don't think anyone else would/could do it, although the Bourne Again gimmick is a slight possibility as Bourne used that in ECW.

Yes, if it is a gimmick/character that the WWE did not own, that is more likely for them to use. If the WWE doesn't mind, they might be able to do Doink but just not use the name, maybe call it Bourne or something else.

The green attire is the one he wore originally and during much of Borne's run as the character. I think it is mostly based off of this pic:

One minor nitpick for me is them not going with the red tights, like the Hasbro, although the white ones are truer to the actual reality.

It would've been nice to see a retro style in the yellow/blue attire, rather than the orange and blue stripes, imo.

It is a bit crazy that if we get a Retro in tribute to the Orange Card figure then we would have two figures of this type between Hasbro and Mattel but neither one would represent arguably his most memorable attire.

Exactly! It wasn't til Jakks, I think, that we got his most classic look, besides the Bend Em, which technically wasn't even Bourne. There's some good customs out there, but I've not seen one using the Hasbro head.

What is his most memorable attire? Arguably it's his WMIX look, against Crush. I can't post pics (aka don't know how) but his mid to late 93 look.

Yeah this is the one I mean - I might be wrong but I feel this was his longest wore design, bridging from Borne to Apollo, and the one that I think is used when Doink appears in more recent years. Maybe I'm too influenced by his memorable matches against Crush and Bret when IIRC he was wearing this design. But anyway, about Chella...

It's the attire he wore in his most memorable ppv matches as well as the video game. When he left WWF, he began using his original attire again, possibly to differentiate himself from Apollo and WWF. I'd love it if Chella could somehow get the rights to make that post-wwf Bourne, especially the ECW version who fought 911 and Shane Douglas etc. It would fit right in with the ECW names that both Chella and ZST are keen on grabbing, though it might be a little difficult and or obscure for their interest, I dunno. 🤞

It's just odd to think that we never saw any retro version of the attire.
