Detroit Red Wings 2007 Franchise
Head Coach: Mike Babcock Location: Detroit Arena: Joe Louis Arena Captain: Nicklas Lidstrom
Team Ratings
Team Overall: 88 Offensive Rating: 86 Defensive Rating: 87 Goaltending: 92 Difficulty: Medium, which is the 2nd hardest level. Period Length: 5:00
Season Preview Outlook: The Detroit Red Wings were supposed to be too old to matter in the playoffs anymore, but last year there were a few teams in the Western Conference that gained a new-found respect for their elders.
The Red Wings have gained 108 points or more in every campaign since 1999-2000 and the club posted a whopping 113 points last season. However, since winning the Stanley Cup in 2002, Detroit had failed to advance to the conference finals in each of its previous three postseasons and had been an opening-round victim twice during that span from 2002-06.
That all changed in the last postseason as the Red Wings rolled into the conference finals before losing in six games to Anaheim, the eventual Stanley Cup champions. It was a surprising run for Detroit, which counted a 42-year-old goaltender and a 45-year-old defenseman among its team's assets.
Dominik Hasek and Chris Chelios are coming back in 2007-08 to take another shot at winning the Cup, and they'll be joined by an excellent cast of polished veterans and budding stars.
One thing is clear, if Detroit makes it into the playoffs this year, other teams would be silly to think that the club is going to simply cave in under the weight of its years.
The Red Wings have made 16 straight playoff appearances, the longest current streak among teams in the four major North American sports. Detroit is primed to win its seventh straight Central Division title with only Nashville posing a legitimate threat to that streak.
However, the Red Wings are not judged by their regular season, but on how they perform in the playoffs. It's hard to say if another deep postseason run is in the cards for this year, but the Wings will be one of the main contenders by the time the NHL's second season rolls around.
Expectations: Make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs. -------------------- Hell-o dudes. I know there aren't many hockey fans here, but I feel this board is lacking in franchises, and they used to be really exciting to follow and read. So, in an attempt to revitalize the board a bit, I will be doing this, and my Packers franchise. These games go faster, so I'll probably be updating this more frequently. More importantly, I will not be simulating ANY game. I will play the complete season all the way through. The A.I. is kind of back and forth at the moment, I win huge, then lose close. Either way, it's fun, and I hope ya enjoy reading. MORE TO COME.

Game 1: Wednesday, October 3rd 2007: Final Score: [red]Detroit[/red]: 5 Anaheim:2 Winged fury in Joe Louis Arena DETROIT – Detroit opened the Joe Louis Arena to a frenzied crowd tonight as the Ducks displayed quite the belly flop on the ice. The defending Stanley Cup Champions looked like anything but Wednesday night as they fell 5-2.
The offensive flurry by the Wings truly was fire on ice, and got them out to a quick 3-0 lead heading into the intermission. "We couldn't get anything done out there" said Ducks coach Randy Carlyle. "We were beating ourselves, and that's the worst kind of loss."
Was it a bad night for the Ducks, or are the Wings for real? "We had a good night, but we try to not get ahead of ourselves" said team captain Nicklas Lidstrom. "If we continue to play like we did tonight, I think we'll be just fine."
With the Wings having a decent game under their belt, they now head to Chicago on Saturday to take on the division rival Blackhawks in the United Center.------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, just a quick note here. Apologies for how short it is, I had already played 10 games into the season before I decided to do this. I thought they would let me go back and get the boxscore and all the stats, but apparently I can't. So I'll just wing it (zing!) until I can get to the 11th game and report some actual stats.

Game 2: Saturday, October 6th 2007: Final Score: Detroit: 2 Chicago: 3 Detroit Loses Shootout Heartbreaker in Chicago DETROIT – Detroit went on the road for the first time this season on Saturday night to take on division rival Chicago. In what seemed like a one sided match early for Detroit, ended up as disaster. The game ended up going to a shootout, where the Wings couldn't come up with any scoring, as Chicago got the victory 3-2.
The offense came out fast and furious, netting two early goals, much to the dismay of the Chicago crowd. The defense dominated the first 2 periods, as Chicago not only didn't score, but barely managed to get off any shots.
Then, disaster struck. Deep into the 3rd period, Chicago got onto the board with their first score of the game. With only 2 minutes to go in the 3rd, the Blackhawks scored yet another goal to tie the game at 2. Detroit was stunned, and went into overtime reeling from the previous period.
After nothing in OT, the game then went to a shootout. The Wings were unable to come up with anything, and Chicago scored once on the dominate Hasek, but once proved to be enough as Detroit fell 3-2.
"It really upsets me that we collapsed like this" said Wings coach Mike Babcock. "We were dominate for more than two-thirds of the game, and to come out with a loss is just frustrating."
Detroit hopes to rebound as they head back home this Monday to host the Edmonton Oilers.

Game 3: Monday, October 8th 2007: Final Score: Detroit: 3 Edmonton: 5 Not Enough Oil in the Engine as Detroit Falls to Edmonton DETROIT – Detroit came back home tonight after a tough loss in Chicago, hoping to redeem themselves. However, Edmonton had other plans, as they came in and scored 3 goals in the first period, shocking the crowd in the Joe Louis Arena. Detroit rebounded in the 2nd period, getting 2 goals to bring the game within 1 at intermission, but Edmonton was too strong as they netted two more goals in the 3rd to topple the Wings 5-3.
The offense came out terribly sluggish, unable to get anything going. The shots were off, the passing was sub-par, and the skating was uninspired. Edmonton's defense held the powerful line of Detroit in check for all of the first period, and shut them down again in the 3rd.
The Wings rebounded in the 2nd period, netting two goals, and heading into intermission with all of the momentum. "We just imploded" said veteran Chris Chelios. "Whenever we seemed to have things starting to go in our direction, Edmonton was scoring or playing amazing defense. Hats off to them."
With 2 straight losses, Detroit hopes to build some kind of momentum as they host the Calgary Flames on Wednesday. The question now, will Detroit be able to set the ice on fire once again?

where did you get the season outlook? or did you type that up yourself? I got bits and pieces from different websites. I typed up the outlook on my Packer franchise, but I wanted something quick so I wouldn't get discouraged in doing this. I think most of it was from ESPN.

Game 4: Wednesday, October 10th 2007: Final Score: Detroit: 9 Calgary: 3 Detroit Sets Ice on Fire as Calgary Goes Up in Flames DETROIT – Coming into this game having lost the previous 2, Detroit was looking to get a win and get a little momentum going before the high hopes started to sink. Would you know that by the way the Wings played tonight? Absolutely not.
Detroit took the ice tonight with something to prove, and boy did they ever make a point. The Wings scored 5 goals before intermission, almost surpassing the total goals of the previous 3 games combined. Calgary looked stunned, as they had no answer for the speed of their opposition.
The offense came out with a vengeance, netting three goals in the first period, with two coming from Johan Franzen. The only way to describe the offense tonight, was that it was in perfect sync. Everything seemed to mesh, and the players really clicked on all cylinders. Three of the goals for the Red Wings tonight came on Powerplays that they were able to capitalize on.
The MVP of this game was no doubt Johan Franzen, as he scored three goals in the game, completing the hat trick. Johan was understandably more than thrilled with this accomplishment. "It was unbelievable" said Franzen. "It might as well have been a soccer net out there, I felt like I couldn't miss."
"I'm thrilled that we were able to get the offense going again" said Wings coach Mike Babcock. "We were so close the last two games, but this game showed what we're all about."
With the offense clicking, and the defense as physical as ever, Detroit hopes to exact some revenge as they welcome division rival Chicago into the Joe Louis Arena this Friday.

Almost done updating until the 11th game when I can start updating it a little better. I'm doing this all from memory right now. I'll update the stats, standings, and some other news from around the league when I get to the 11th game. This is actually my highest scoring game I've ever had, powerplays FTW. Let me add that I still can't get any stats or boxscores from the first 10 games, I only remember it because Johan got a hat trick and I scored 9 goals

Game 5: Saturday, October 12th 2007: Final Score: Detroit: 4 Chicago: 2 Wings exact revenge as Chicago goes down DETROIT – With the previous heartbreaker looming over their heads, Detroit came in with a bit of a chip on it's shoulder. Determined not to let this one come down to a shootout, the Wings ended it when the 3rd period came to a close as they defeated the Blackhawks 4-2.
Both teams came out playing each other very even. The offensive and defensive sides of both teams seemed to mirror each other, as they scored 1 goal a piece in each of the first 2 periods. With neither team budging going into intermission, Detroit's defense began to take over in the 3rd.
They say defense wins championships, and Detroit proved that it also wins games, as they locked down in the 3rd period to shut out Chicago. Goalie Dominik Hasek was letting nothing by him, as he stonewalled the Blackhawks on many shots. The rest of Detroit was very physical, racking up over 30 hits in this one.
It was the Swedes who stepped up for the Wings tonight, as Nicklas Lidstrom and Johan Franzen scored two goals a piece, with Nicklas also getting an assist. "I felt like I needed to be the man tonight and step it up" said Lidstrom. "If I'm going to call myself captain, I gotta be able to put this team on my back and get it done."
After a dominating performance in the 3rd period, Detroit was feeling pretty good about their defense. "I think I was a little more driven tonight than the last time we played" said veteran Chris Chelios. "When you play like we did in the first game with these guys, and come out with a loss, it makes you a little angry."
"I'm thrilled" said Wings coach Mike Babcock. "To get a win over a division rival is great, and to do it in front of our home crowd makes it that much better."
Detroit will no doubt celebrate tonight, but they will soon begin preparation for a brutal west coast tour as they head out of Detroit for 4 road games.
