I missed out on HBK's first stretch because I didn't start watching 'til 2000. So, while I've obviously looked back over the last twenty years and caught myself up, I'll never know what 90s HBK felt like to watch in context. Having said that, many on here have said his work post-injury was his best.
What's your opinion?

I've been a Shawn fan since his Midnight Rockers days, but my favorite years for him are undoubtedly his '95-'98 years. That was when he was absolutely at the top of his game. When he returned, his physical limitations were well-hidden, but they were still there. Mid-to-late 90s was Prime Shawn Michaels.

I’m not a big hbk guy but I did love the time when he turned heel and went with Sherri and had the ic belt run.
I could never get with Shawn as a heavyweight contender

1st run for sure!
I was big fan of the rockers, i loved shawn as singles cocky IC champ. HATED him having the HW belt until around 1997 or so then i was ok with it. loved him in DX!

tbh i never saw much of his 2nd run.
But 96-97 pilled up, complete backstage toxic nightmare HBK was my favorite wrestler of all time. The dude was chaos outside of the ring. And poetry inside that ring.
u can just see him getting cockier and cockier and then DX happens and he's in full idgaf i will do what i want when i want mode.

Going to have to agree with the above comments. I haven't seen much of his early stuff, 88-94, more the mid-90's stuff. He was a big friggin' deal. Hotshot attitude, at the front of the attitude movement with serious 'tude, he was the perfect showman. When he came back it was big deal but he definitely did seem limited and more of an afterthought. He didn't have that same aura he used to, granted new stars had emerged. I stopped watching after a certain point in the early 2000's and he was just old at that point.

I felt his ring work and character were both better than during his first run.
Still a great performer during his second stint but I felt a lot of his matches fell into the same “finisher fest” trap that a lot of performers fall into today. I just didn’t enjoy HBK as much during that run as I had in the past.

It's difficult to truly describe the year-to-year emotions that fans felt about Shawn back then. In mid-95, he was having classic IC title matches and starting to ascend in popularity. By 1996, he's the top babyface in the company, and crowds are on fire for him. By mid-97, crowds are starting to turn on him, and by the end of that year, he was hated as I've ever seen a heel anywhere. The fact that he was chaos backstage doesn't change my enjoyment of that time period in retrospect. It was magic, pure and simple.

the greatness from the 90s.....
Vs Marty Janetty Vs Razor @ WMX & @ Summerslam 95 vs Jarrett @ IYH 2 vs Owen @ IYH vs 123 Kid on Raw vs Diesel @ IYH vs Bulldog @ KOTR 96 vs Mankind @ IYH vs Sid @ SSeries & RR w/Austin vs Owen & Bulldog on Raw vs Undertaker @ Bad Blood & RR vs Austin @ WM
then the 00s.....
vs HHH @ SSlam 2002 SS02 & 03 performances were outstanding vs HHH on Raw in 03 vs HHH @ RR04 vs HHH vs Benoit @ WM & Backlash 04 feud against Angle 1st WM against UT
in fairness its 50/50 match quality I just prefer HBK from the 90s. RR 07 performance vs Batista Stretcher match

I liked both, but I picked 1988-1998. He helped revolutionize tag team wrestling and was the best thing about the New Generation Era. His 2nd run was good for MOTY candidates.

91-94 was peak Shawn IMO
He was trailblazing, and his cocky heel persona was so much easier to get on board with than his cocky face persona. His 96 Vince McMahon-on-commentary-orgasming period was insufferable.

His 96 Vince McMahon-on-commentary-orgasming period was insufferable. So true, that was pretty bad, hard to look back at now and watch sometimes. Although I did like his 91-94 end of rockers run/beginning of his solo heel run, I feel his best in-ring work was during 1995-1997. I feel like the cocky, degenerate heel character he was building at the end of 1997/beginning of 1998, was his best work. I feel if he could have kept that going into 1998 through 2000, I really think he could have had a hell of a run. Granted, he would have had to put his ego aside for a bit, but, I think the matches he could have had at that time with the cocky heel persona would have been unbelievable. Though, with that being said, I think Shawn may not be here today if he didn't take this time off and get his personal issues in order. Also, it may have been competition for the Rock, since the Rock was doing the cocky heel persona at the time.

I feel like Shawn's late 97/98 run is overshadowed too much by what happened in Montreal, and his backstage issues even though he was definitely doing much better work than he was as a face. A longer run would have definitely helped his own legacy, but woulda really hurt The Rock and HHH I think.

I love Shawn and all of his work.
I think his 2002-2010 run; but that's the Shawn I grew up on as kid. When I think HBK for me as a kid; it's the Shawn reunited DX in 2006; Cena feud; and Retiring Flair. And the Jericho program. His 2002-2010 run was excellent. But; I also loved his heel his 96-98 run. Shawn's just gifted; end of case. But 2002-2010 Shawn deserved one good last title run. But he didn't need it and didn't want it. But it would of been fun getting 5-6 Month run.
