DDP, Steiner, or Benoit. DDP could have done it at Halloween Havoc 1998 and it wouldn’t have hurt Goldberg in the slightest.
If Steiner or Benoit, have Goldberg continue to dominate into 1999. End the nWo crap and let him feud with Bret and Sting for a bit. Then either Steiner could be built as this monster heel who could match Goldberg, or build Benoit as the underdog who uses his speed and technical skills to take down Goldberg.
It could even be argued that Nash was an ok choice to end the streak. He was super popular and a build to a Nash/Goldberg rematch would have made money. The problem with what we got wasn’t that Nash beat Bill. It’s everything that happened after.

I'm surprised Goldberg didn't have the pull or smarts to tell management how awful a finish this was and decide to go against booking. Even if he refused to do the show, there's no judge or jury who could logically decide against him for breech of contract. WCW would have been laughed out of court for how stupid it was. I know Goldberg was still new to WCW but you'd think he's have the pull to tell management to change the ending. Considering he's a guy who got in, made his money and got out a few times, that he would have been smart enough to ask to change the ending.

On top of being so new to the business, even by the end of 1998, based on what others have said in interviews, Goldberg seemed to follow Hogan and Nash’s advice a lot back then. He saw them as seasoned top guys and didn’t really question the advice or angles given to him. Plus Bill was never a “lifelong” fan. Even with as much drawing power as he had at the time, I doubt he cared what they did with his character as long as he was getting paid (unlike someone like Hogan who would do anything to get out of jobs and protect his character).

Nash was the booker & Bischoff lived in his back pocket...he had nobody to complain to. As said ultiple times here it wasnt the way it ended....he was cheated after all.
The angle itself had many storyline branches to explore. But Nash decided instead to flush 9 months of storylines down the toilet. Even then it wasn't too late....Goldberg getting his revenge and ruining the nWo was money. But in their infinite wisdom they decided they didn't want money. They wanted to turn Flair heel, Hogan face and give us that feud AGAIN.
So Goldberg looks like a fool and fights with Bam Bam. Good God.

Listening to him defend this period is f#ckin pathetic I gotta give it to him, while this era with him in charge of the pen wasn't the best, he sure does stick to his guns in interviews. Dude really has no regrets.

Honestly it ended fine. Just wish we got the correct follow up.
