Do what your heart and mind feels best for, bro.
I'm thinking the end of the road is nearing for me too. I only collect legends and apparently Mattel and their distributers enjoy playing Charlie Brown and Lucy football games with those collectors.

I was in this boat January last year - also being from the UK & nearing that number after 39...
I decided that with all the new exclusives that were going to be released at the time, that I had neither the time, patience or the mental dexterity to continuously search online for them - it was a joyless, soul sucking exercise that I didn't wish to continue any longer.
This is what I did: I decided that I was just going to stick to Legends/Flashbacks (selectively). I sold pretty much all of my modern era figures. I reinvested the money back into buying forthcoming Legends/Flashbacks.
I am now, in a much happier place figure wise, my credit card has very little money on it - & I also managed to clear 5 grand along the way.

I don’t know how people can like every era of wrestling. People can like more than one type of pizza, shoes, why not wrestling. I can like bigger than life characters ala the 80's. I can like a realistic, edgy presentation like the late 90's I can enjoy the more athletic performer ala the modern day. more like...people can’t like every type of pizza/shoes. Ill stand by that Cool you like all eras. I’m sure I’ve heard of that around here but I’ve never personally met anyone who stated it. I collect 1985-2000 and I’ve made only one or two rare exceptions in about 8 years of collecting

Honestly maybe at this point just stick to first time in the lines. No point in getting your 14th A.J or 27th Undertaker. You'd still be expanding your collection and saving a ton of money. That’s good advice but what happens if there’s 20 undertaker figures you like.. I mean you got hall of champions taker... defining moments taker... the collectors edition taker... the SDCC exclusive taker and lots more. You probably have those already but what I do is try to stick to one figure per person but I'll buy multiple if it's another gimmick or character. For Taker I have different eras. Debut look, 90's with mask, Ministry, Biker, Current. Don't need multiple of those now they'd be too similar.

Ok, bottom line is do what feels right for you.
But if you need some advice...
I'm nearing the big 40 myself, far closer than I ever imagined actually. Also, I'm terribly poor, live in a 3 room apartment, and on a fixed income. Here's the truth that *I* was forced to confront recently.
You can't collect them all when you're in a situation like this. It isn't sustainable or feasible. You won't have the room to display them and you'll put yourself out on the street trying to pay for them. There is no age, I repeat, no required age to quit. None. Age is a bullcrap construct and notion, once you reach adulthood, age should have next to no impact or say on what you choose to do with your life. There WILL be people who shame you for certain things, but it isn't worth listening to them. Do what you want. The true problem is can you afford it and do you have room to enjoy the hobby. If the answer to those last two questions is "no" then maybe it's time to re-evaluate how you do things. Hobbies are a necessary part of life, to hell with anyone who says they aren't. Everyone needs enrichment. But there's no sense in indulging in those hobbies to a point where they are causing you great financial struggle.
I've had to cut back greatly in the past few months, knowing that I just can't sustain the hobby to the level I'd like to. Figures have come and gone that I'd loved to have owned that I simply couldn't afford at the time and can't at all now that their price has skyrocketed. It's just part of the game for some people, and there's nothing you can do about it.
In conclusion, do what is in your heart, but take into account that real, adult life is a b*tch and you need to make sure your needs are met before you indulge in hobbies. Age is just a number, but your bank account is a legit fact and if you can't afford to go all in to the hobby? Then accept you can't and move on. Life isn't fair, and neither are your personal fignances on most days. Do what you can, and know and accept your limits.

39, married with child and pets. Average well paying jobs. We budget everything and just like most we overspend and indulge beyond our means at times. I collect multiple lines but for wwe i collect new characters and only certain multiples if i like new attires (aj, warrior, rey, finn, hogan). I have thousands of actions figures between wwe, aew, marvel, star wars, fortnite, neca. Somehow we always get by and pay all our bills/ responsibilities first most. My suggestion is to make a list of all your expenses and then see what you have left to spend on collecting. Base your buying power on that remaining balance

Like many said, be more selective, but do what makes you happy. I tend to get one of every wrestler, then if they have a drastic change, (short hair and long hair Daniel Bryan for example) I get them. Duplicates only if need be - or found at a cheap price (I have come across $5 elites on clearance at Walmart and got figs I didn't need that way).
That way I tend to get maybe 2 or 3 per Elite Series, and now that AEW is starting their repeats, I can let those go by too.
But - that is my style of collecting. Read through everyone's advice and take from it what you will and adjust as need be.

Well I live in a place where only RSC is the only option to get my desired figure. I am nowadays very picky, I only buy Ultimates and few elites of superstars that I want if they botch something I pass on and don't even care. Aew unrivaled series have excited me recently but I am very selective in that to bcoz I don't need each and every superstar, only the ones I love admiring, nowadays collectors are collecting that stupid cardboard racks also.

My suggestion is collect what era you enjoyed the most since that's what I did after collecting nearly all the Jakks Classic Superstars.

Same boat although ive not let it affect me financially, i just cant keep up there's to much, im a golden era and late 90s era guy and have everything from those era's. I recently purchased street profits for my current era and when i got them i looked at them and thought why the hell i have got these guys i dont even enjoy watching them, its just to keep up and buy them for the sake of it, that's what i need to stop doing. Pick your fave 3 era's and collect just those

I live in the UK where a lot of exclusive figures are not made available to us... I have been collecting for years and have almost every elite to date. Recently it droned on me im approaching the big 4... 40 years old and I question myself how much longer I can still do this. There’s literally almost a set of regular elites every single month and that’s not including the many exclusives that come out either, not to mention the AEW figures which look like they will be a set of figures every month too. That’s a lot of money every month to be spending on toys... how the hell do you guys do it?... I see some collectors have massive collections, not just figures but a lot of other wrestling merchandise too. I’ve considered giving up but some have suggested to me either just buy the legends or just buy the current roster and I’ll be ok but then I’m one of those that wants all the figures that look good. Tough decision... it’s almost like buy them all and go bankrupt or give up collecting altogether.
Serious question -- is buying and owning 500-600 figures bringing you joy? Are you able to really appreciate and enjoy them? Or has it just become an addiction/compulsion?
Like you said -- they cost a fortune. With every elite -- you've probably got at least 500 figures. How can you even really look at and appreciate them? Maybe only collect what you can manage and that that will really make you happy?

I’m 40 in about 9 weeks also... I crossed this bridge last year.
I realised I barely watch the the current product with the exception of Rumble, Mania and Summerslam. Maybe an odd PPV here or there, but I watch the old stuff on the network mostly. So I sold everything off that I didn’t want based on when I stopped watching Nitro on a weekly based (yes I was WCW to the end). So that meant pretty much any Elite Mattel made that represented a wrestler after 01 was gone from my collection. Few exceptions of course - elite 16 punk and RSC edge for instance, just great figures so I kept them. I also pick up RSC exclusives from time to time...
I also made the decision to complete the Ultimate edition line (and keep my completed EG and DM lines)
I now buy all Ultimate Editions, no more then about 20-25 elites a year (Legends and Flashback only, unless it’s Balor) and no basics. I Enjoy collecting more then ever and have more cash to go and buy other stuff i want. Hot Toys, NECA Turtles, Graded Hasbros and graded sealed Nintendo games from my childhood. (If anyone has any factory sealed WWF NES, SNES or Gameboy games - hit me up - PayPal ready lol).
Sometimes, less is more...
If your still into the current product hardcore, I’d suggest some rules to your collection. 1 of each wrestler only, unless they are your fav or a world champion. Something like that. Once you figure out the rules going forward, apply it to your current collection and sell them off. I put my “stock” (figures that didn’t fit my collection) in tote boxes in the garage until they sold through on FB and evilbay... you’ll realise you don’t really miss them, and if you do, put them back in your room / display and no harm done.
It does sound a bit like this is an addiction and need rather then enjoyment at this point (or at least your trying to figures that out). What makes you happiest when you open up the mail or fine in store? If your relived you got it, stop collecting now. If your happy you got it, keep going.

If you're collecting out of obligation to get everything, or because you're a completionist, or because you see "get them all" on the back of the box and take it literally, then it would be pretty easy for me to say "Stop". I was heavily into board games for a while, and saw the same thing of people mad they couldn't "keep up". The amount of people who couldn't enjoy a game unless they owned everything for it (add-ons, expansions, kickstarter exclusives, custom dice) was shocking to me. I don't understand that urge. You don't need to be a completionist. There's no prize at the end for "keeping up".
However, if you genuinely really like all of these figures that are released... I am honestly envious of that passion. I buy every single figure I want, and I own maybe 40 toys. There's a few more I think are kinda neat, and would match a 'set' I have, but I wouldn't get that much pleasure out of owning the Dudley Boys... so the urge to spend isn't really there. If you do genuinely think all of these wrestlers are really cool and want the figures, I wish I knew how to help that. The idea of not being able to afford something I want terrifies me. Let alone something I need.
